  • Let's Eat Grandma performing their song "Donnie Darko" from their album I'm All Ears live on the JBTV stage.
Let's Eat Grandma are a British pop group formed in 2013 by childhood friends Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth. They released their debut studio album I, Gemini in 2016 through Transgressive Records. Their second studio album, I'm All Ears, was released in 2018 to widespread acclaim.
    "Donnie Darko"
I saw you in the yellow pages
I just looked at it to pass the time
In my self-alienating phases I play a rough game to win, to win
Of being things that I can't be
And honestly some people are so committed to honesty
But I don't know if these can face that
'Cause I've wanted to take back what I've said before
    But I, I couldn't find my receipt
I've got bed bug bites up my spine
And my left hand side cooled them down
In the freezer aisle, oh, so sweet, so the night comes by
Now I'm lying flat on the bathroom tiles
Hear the buzz of the hornet fly
Trapped inside of my orchid mind
    I'm going batshit crazy
    It's not real life, I can't be dialing 999
Peel my skin like a clementine
Just reminds me of Auld Lang Syne
But I focus right on the bright, blue light
And hold on tight, hold on tight
    Donnie Darko's at my windscreens
Screaming, stop the car, stop the car, please
    But I can't
    And I can't
'Cause the beatings just get harder and we'll never grow them out
'Cause the hand that does the dealings is the one that feeds your mouth
And the beatings just get harder and we'll never grow them out
'Cause the hand that does the dealings is the one that feeds your mouth
    And I won't, and I won't
I saw you in the yellow pages
I just looked at it to pass the time
In my self-alienating phases I play a rough game to win, to win
Of beatings that I can't beat
And honestly some people are so committed to honesty
But I don't know if these can face that
'Cause I've wanted to take back what I've said before
    But I, I couldn't find my receipt
I saw you in the yellow pages
I just looked at it to pass the time
'Cause I've wanted to take back what I've said before
    But I can't, and I can't
And I know, and I know

They're the dorkiest most confident duo I've seen perform in awhile. How are they so playful yet so transcendent at the same time? I heard this one before, but "Hot Pink" came up on a Spotify radio and I had to look them up. After watering them perform, my fandom is solidified.
Surprised they're so young. Could've fooled me and told me they were seasoned pros, but these gals are just getting started!

I think it's because they want to be near the loop pedals, so that they can turn the loops on and off. Blink and you'll miss it, but while they're doing those stunts, you can see them reaching out to the loop pedals.
I found this in an interview: “We wrote it with a Boss loop pedal,” explains Hollingworth, “and we couldn’t be asked to lean down and press the button to shut the loop off, so we just used to hit it with our feet, and that makes you a bit unstable. One of us fell over once!”

      @mct.4381 Před 5 lety +21

Why do you think it's pretentious? This is what LEG have to say about the track - "We watched Donnie Darko while we were still writing our first album, years ago. We weren’t writing about the film-there’s nothing about giant rabbits-but it was an inspiration, especially the part when Donnie’s run over. Some of the themes match some of ours, being a teenager, navigating the world, and things being ambiguous. Even in terms of the sounds on the album, it just made sense.”
Personally I think it's a great song by two immensely talented and articulate musicians, and having the good fortune of having met them a few times I can honestly say that neither of them are remotely pretentious.

So many wonderful musicians, and songs, and performers have been labeled "pretentious". Puts them in good company.
And honestly, what some see as pretentious others see as approaching brilliance. Just depends on how you like your music.
