I have a trail hawk , and trust me I know what your talking about! Just spent over $5,000 on mine , knuckles on both sides of rear tires had to be replaced and each on at a cost of $1,300 dollars each!!! Absolutely outrageous! Plus the other parts, I will never ever purchase a Jeep again! Learned my lesson the hard way!
Jeeps are garbage now days. Twenty years ago they were decent vehicles. I don’t recommend the newer ones to anyone anymore.
Dont get a beefy toy if you cant afford the repairs holyballs
@@shannonstrode7967 I didn’t buy it ! My then husband surprised me with it ! No matter what ! It’s ridiculous to pay that for one part ! Sorry!
Did you go to the stealer?
Mopar parts giant. About $1200 for both.
At 75,000 miles, I just had new front struts installed on my 2016 Cherokee Trailhawk. They found one of the CV joint boots had a cut in it and water had gotten in. It cost an extra $362 for the new CV/axle assembly. I use the tow package often and like having off-road suspension. I like is knowing I can kick in the locking rear axle and crawl over stuff if there's a disaster. Great vehicle so far: comfortable, capable, and reliable. Almost 8 years and counting...
I offroad my 2017 frequently, and I have no regets about getting the Trailhawk model. If you want offroad capability there is a price
the amount of talking, the common sense, the educating.....where tf have you been all my youtube watching life. Instant sub and like, helped me out with learning how to do it if you can take a lucky guess to how i found this video, but I also throughly enjoyed watching the whole thing, no "10 mins of talking before starting to turn a wrench" bs. Thank you
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback!
I was just about worried when you didn’t have the right Shaft in just before the your K9 supervisor came by to clear up the issue. Big difference in shafts from standard to Trailhawk. $900 is steep…. Has me thinking it might not just be worth it to upgrade to a Chromoly set if they ever break. This is definitely the best lesson to ALWAYS inspect your boots after heading off-road, and have a repair kit and some grease on hand. Seriously great video.
We had to have the driver's side CV axle replaced on our 2020 Cherokee TH for exactly the same reason. Torn boot. Thank goodness it was still under warranty as the Jeep only had about 13000 miles on it at the time of replacement. To top it off, Jeep didn't have the part and it took us 45 days to finally get it replaced.
Great tips during the replacement process and about the $900 hit for a Trailhawk model axle shaft-keeping my 2015 Latitude after learning this!!
in all reality with the right tools this is an easy job. I had a lifted 2005 grand cherokee hemi that would throw an axle every 6 months or so. I became an expert diagnosing axle issues and replacing them.
I pack a little transmission assembly goo around the axle circllip and in the groove. It keeps the circlip ring centered when installing the axle and l've found they go in much easier especially when you don't got a straight shot.
In this review we leaned that this class off jeep SUV will drain your money in parts. Hope representative from Chrysler see this negative impact on jeep trailhawlk parts price. And report to the management to rectify the issue. well done man...
Thanks for the heads up on this subject.
You bet, thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video and the great info...definitely go after market and DIY.
there is and upgraded aftermarket. mine will cost $2000 when mine break. can’t wait to upgrade it.
This is nothing complicated and the Trail Hawk DOES ride nicely on paved roads and super nicely off road . If you think this is expensive try doing this on a Mercedes
Just replaced mine. It's also the off road suspension on other models, my 2015 Cherokee Latitude also has the off road suspension, with the trailer tow package. The front drive axle was $340 from O'Reilly. Mine started clunking and had a torn boot at 117,000 miles.
So any kl with the tow package got the "beefier" axles that the th comes with? I just picked up a 2018 th with tow package. Has 53k miles on it..... this thing is going to be like owning a subaru all over again......
wow that was impressive. thanks for educating us. God bless.
This video is very helpfull, thank you
Same is true for Renegades with the Trailhawk trim. I burned $700 just for one.
Ouch! That’s a ridiculous price for an axle shaft!
I found aftermarket axles for my Renegade Trailhawk at Rockauto for 200 a pop + shipping. Not exactly cheap but letting you know in case you need to do the other side. I needed both sides at only 80k miles & was determined not to give the dealership $1500 just for cv axles.
O'Reilly has them for around 220. For trailhawk w off road suspension
And I JUST this week bought a 2015 Trailhawk with 158K miles. I hope the previous owner did this BEFORE I got it . 😀
How much did u get it for? I’m eyeing a trailhawk 2015 for $8500 with 190k miles
@@komichan4409 I paid 15K for it but it doesn't have a scratch on it. Excellent condition but BARE as to accessories.
Very informative Thank you for the video. I have 3 Cherokees but not any Trailhawks. I'm a DIYer and haven't needed to replace any of the front axles yet and watching your video I'm at for if I need to replace one. So Thank you again
Unbelievable….thanks for the warning!
!
On my 2011 Jeep Liberty I used an after market front half axle - no problems doing so or afterwards.
Right, the vehicle in question has the Trail Hawk package. That’s where the difference comes into play. A standard Jeep Cherokee could have used a regular off brand parts store axle without issue.
I've got 76k miles on my 15 cherokee TH. Only replaced one because I tore the boot and didn't know. Other than that, it's been good. Just search around, I got the axle for 450 from a dealer on discount.
If you got the 3.2 V-6 and live in a cold climate, keep an eye on the oil filter/cooling housing. It's plastic and they can crack, especially after a cold snap. We had about 70,000 miles on our 2017 Cherokee Trailhawk when it cracked and we lost 5 quarts of oil going the road before the check engine light came on.
I have Jeep Cherokee as well and I think my cv joint need replacing, however I have the limited model.
Your Jeep uses the affordable and readily available axle shafts so you're in luck!
Thanks for the video. Real expensive to get parts from the dealer but sometimes it can't be helped. That's when you know you bought the wrong vehicle like this one.
Correct! This was filmed back in December and the customer has since sold the vehicle and bought something else.
Rockauto 102.99 with offroad suspension
WOW! I had thoughts of getting me a car like this one! Now I know I'm not!!
Thanks for sharing your mechanical experiences!!
You can buy a Jeep Cherokee, just make sure it’s not the Trail Hawk package.
So ..because of 1 video that changes your mind? Let us know what your going to buy guaranteed I can do the same on every vehicle you can think of.
I bought a 2014 trailhawk as a tow behind vehicle, but now I no longer have a motorhome. Hopefully this would be covered by vehicle repair insurance companies.
My friend has a 2020 trailhawk. her driver's rear is needing replacement. Is it almost the same process?
So the pry bar is actually reaching the clip? There is enough clearance? Or are you just pushing up on the axle in the hole? After watching you with the clip who knows if it’s up or down.
The axle feels like it’s in last the clip because I can’t pull it back out without really yanking hard on the hub side. But in your video you have no gap at all between the inner CV and the engine. Any tips?
I just bought mine on Mopar , i find it for 576$ lucky because my dealer was selling it 880$
Did the noise in front sound like a binding noise? There was a recall on some jeeps pertaining to the axle spindle. I’m also had an issue finding the right struts for front nit going through dealer.
rockauto seems to have GSP off road package ones $124, yeah they also have MOPAR for $768, my 2014 is knocking so I'm guessing it's a CV
Tom I just went through everything you went through for the part, ROCK AUTO had it in stock including shipping....... $115....trust me it went by the term factory off road suspension and on that note all four axles are the same part number on the trail hawk. auto zone had the same issue you had and I live in central ny state.
This makes me want to order 2 just to have on hand.
@@Toycoma cheap investment for sure👍
Thanks for that info! I’ve pinned it for anyone else needing an axle shaft for one of these.
@@Tomsfoolery. thank you for the original post👍👍
Same here - ordered from Rockauto $75 for the left front and $102 for the right front from Rockauto. Just make sure to order for "factory off road package"
Is this a recurring issue in Trailhawk? I have a honda civic with same issue.
mines a Cherokee latitude 2015 they have em for around $160-$200 @ autozone not the Mopars thou good thing i didnt go for the "off road suspension" add on trailhawk at the dealership. Honestly I can't complain too much on the jeep latitiude yea it had some problems but i fixed em all with relatively little headache. Jeeps are cheap SUV's u get what you pay for.
Purchased 2015 Trail Hawk new. I have 121362 miles. I do all my own maintenance. Inspect everything after 4-wheeling always. Replaced original tires once with same type and brand. Replaced all brakes with Red Calipers, top end slotted discs and high-performance brake pads once. I have regularly pulled a 14ft trailer, off road regular in snow and sand frequently. I still have original start/stop battery works fine. CV axels are fine (they are very tough) can't understand how your customer cut the boot in the first place. With all that said however here is my big issue with Jeep. The 2014 and 2015 9 speed transmissions have been an issue from day one. I have always had it serviced per warrantee notice, but these have been software upgrades only. They would never replace the transmission. Now just today it starts to crap out. I can only shift manually. I cannot even locate a rebuilt or new transmission anywhere on the planet. Dealer has no idea when or if they will ever get these in again. Any suggestions?
My suggestion would be to get rid of it. I’m not a fan of them for many reasons. I’ve had two in the shop that were having intermittent transmission issues but no codes were present when scanned. The owners said the jeeps didn’t want to shift and a “service transmission” warning temporarily showed up on the dash. The vehicles were driving fine when I looked at them. I can only speculate they were having intermittent electrical issues.
I have to replace mine now. Did you ever find one cheaper than the $900 dealer one? Please let me know so I can order one. Thanks.
Any tips of getting the axel nut broken lose? My impact isn’t touching it.
I have been looking at the Trailhawk, a new 2022. I did not catch what year and the milage on this trailhawk.
Do you remember the part number for this? Want to make sure things match up.
Was that not a different CV shaft installed compared to the one removed?
Have you looked into the heavy duty RCV axle by MFC offroad. Not sure the cost but 900 bucks from dealer. CRAZY!!!!
Those are like 2500 but they have a lifetime warranty
What are best ways to prevent torn boots? My wife bought a wrangler, and I did not realize until after that hers has CV joints and not a U joint
It's a wear item, it's going to go south eventually no matter what you do. The issue here is that since Fiat bought Jeep they have been trying to turn the line into a SUV which in NOT what a Jeep is. It's a off-road vehicle that's capable on the highway. The Trailhawk is a package that tried to turn a SUV into a off-road Jeep, and to be honest, failed. Because it's a package the parts are marked up which is why he was complaining about the price. Either way (SUV or off-road) the half shafts are going to get wear (granted off-roading will cause more than city driving) and are going to need replacement when they go bad.
Edit: spelling
There are universal repair kits for $ 10 and (in my country) there are also replacements for this part for $ 300
liar.
Mine needed to be replaced on my '15. The first dealership insisted it was the steering rack, and replaced it under the warrenty I purchased. Made noise when driving off the lot. I just laughed...service guy was an idiot. A year later is was worse, so I took it to a different dealership, and they diagnosed the RH axle assy. Irritating.
How many miles was on that trailhawk
you actually found an axle for it??
How many miles?
thats what lifetime care max service plan is for
Heads up y'all... i had same issue. But after some research guess what the liars are telling you.... don't believe it... you can buy the driver side and its a exact match same exact axle... from manufacturer.. you can use aftermarket driver side on the passenger side . Did it myself 👍💯
Pretty easy to avoid if you check your boots every so often.
check them for what? tearing? what preventive remedies do you do?
thats crazy
What if I got a 2020 ?
I did mine, and the wheel bearing for under $200- you need to look harder for parts or rebuild it.
bullshit.
What’s the difference between that shaft and a 3.2 Cherokee shaft? Is there any other shafts in stuck with a 2017 that I bought still owe 15k on it only 43k miles and my cv shaft broke dealer wants $900 as well.. I can afford that like really can’t..
The shaft is much more durable and designed for serious off-roading, which is why it carries the Trail Rated badge and Trailhawk name. A very noticeable difference between the standard Cherokee and the Trailhawk.
@@joebauers2194 and still a pos lol
Your video content good.
Thank you!
Nice informative video! I’ll avoid anything “Trail Hawk”!
Good idea!
Do they at least sell rebuild kits for that axle shaft?!? Man, if I was staring down the barrel of $900 I'd take a gamble on rebuilding it myself!!!
On a related note, it's funny to me how Chevy is catching a ton of flack for slapping the Blazer name on an AWD crossover, but Jeep has gotten away scot-free for doing the exact same thing with the Cherokee name!
I wasn’t able to find a rebuild kit for it. I agree about the Chevy Blazer. Not the Blazer I was hoping for!
That’s because the Trail Hawk is a true off-road compact vehicle. It has 4Lo and a locking rear diff
@@paultruesdale7680 Cherokees are junk
I wouldn't say they have gotten away "scot-free". As a 96 jeep owner me and many others have been bitching about this since the mid 2000's. Once Fiat bought Jeep, they have been trying to get away from it's roots as a off road trail vehicle and we've been bitching about it since.
@@paultruesdale7680 and they made it into a terribly unreliable Fiat
I’m going through that now. Dealer wants $910 each.
That’s crazy, no more jeep trailhawk for me. If i last one more year it’ll be to much.
That is an absolutely ridiculous price for an axle shaft!
Wow good old mopar and subpar factory parts
boohoo the repair cost was to much. Someone purchased an offroad vehicle and complains their upgraded offroad parts cost to much.
Ya but there isn’t really much to be upgraded in an axle shaft to justify 9x the average cost. I’m pretty sure that’s the point. And as mentioned, it’s a wear item; it is absolutely going to be replaced at some point. Adding pricey/beefy aftermarket parts/upgrades to your 4x4 to improve performance is one thing. You can’t really “boohoo” anout beating the hell out of your offroad rig; but coming straight from the manufacturer as a part that will wear no matter the conditions is a different story
Right it's like bitching you're brembos cost so much to do brakes. They must be upgraded from factory they're normally a weak spot on independent axel vehicles when off-roading
They don’t last as long as the regular parts, that’s why we’re complaining. Their so called off road suspension isn’t that reliable after a couple years
Good video. Straight forward replacement.
I got mine for $600. My local dealership wanted $900, but I went online and got it from another dealership for $600. 3 times as much for the Trailhawk, but I use it for it's intended purpose. If you're just going to drive in the city, don't get a trailhawk.
Yet we are so many of these in the city. Still, that’s a pricey axle shaft by comparison!
You’ll see mine in the city…..on weekdays…..weekends are when she plays! Can’t assume just because it’s in the city that it’s not ever used the way it’s meant to be.
How many Miles and Could it have been rebuilt on the Damaged end ?
If I remember correctly it had around 90,000 miles. The dealer was the only place to source the part at the time and they didn’t offer a rebuild kit. I’m told now these shafts are available through Rock Auto. I have not confirmed that however.
@@Tomsfoolery. i was thinking you could of repaired the Failed inner end with the Parts off the New one you bought’
If you cans do simple repairs on a car, Don’t buy an off-road version. More parts to go bad. Especially if you use it like it’s supposed to be used. Plenty of trail fixes in my time.
Another sad story for you. My wife's 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude FWD needed a right rear knuckle bushing where the lateral arm attaches. Clearly looks like any other press fit bushing in the entire world..... Not available aftermarket at all called all the big part stores... Called Chrysler have to replace the whole knuckle assembly, $950 for one knuckle. FCA is a shit company, but probably should have known that prior to purchasing I suppose. Good video, warn people to stay away from these terrible vehicles!
Damn, that looked so easy until you said the price. What a joke eh. Glad I found this video. Good job man.
Good thing I have a 5 year 125k mile warranty
I’ve been informed they are now available aftermarket.
Same here
😔
i got one off rock auto for 700 ish Same deal just a ripped boot super ripoff!
There’s no reason they should cost so much! So many axle shafts for vehicles are a hundred dollars or less!
Autozone ...$189.
It looks like 2019 and newer Cherokee Trailhawk shafts cost about $350.
$802 from the dealer
Jeep, just empty every pocket
Super
Thanks!
wow
Thanks!
Go back to Jeep with the old unit, walk into the parts department and tell them to bend over and grab their ankles. $900 is an obscene price for that component. Stealership on the sales floor, in the service bay and in the parts department. The trifecta of legalized theft.
I am a lifelong mechanic. This is without question one of the worst designed vehicles I've ever worked on. Pure garbage. Shit breaks or wears out on it that NEVER wears out on normal vehicles. Hell, even the lug nuts suck. Save yourself a lot of frustration - buy a Subaru or Toyota - go the same places this car will and do so for 200,000 miles instead of 80,000.
