B&B Charcoal works great with these grills. They do not burn out. Never have to add to them.

Looked good to me! Definitely takes a little experience to get good at cooking on the ol' Hibachi.... (if you're 50 or older, it's perfectly acceptable to call it a Hibachi, younger folks call it a Sportsman's grill 😉) The burgers looked GREAT!

Thank you for this video. I recently found an old sportsman's grill, possibly BSR, in great shape. I did not realize the grilling surface could be flipped. Your tree stump grilling table is an idea I intend to use, too.

Purely luck - it was in a dark garage with other things for sale. I've been trying to find an affordable grill and also think of some way to have a campfire and this seemed like the perfect blend of both - for $15.00. It wasn't until I got it home and looked at the plate that opens to the fire box and saw the name that I realized what it might be. I'll find someone around here with more knowledge about cast iron. At any rate, it's in very good shape - the owner took good care of it.

I do not do raw onions in my hamburger anymore, the water content in the onions tend's to ad water content into the meat giving the meat a parboil effect, I now saute and dry my onions prior to mixing in with the meat...
    JUST A THOUGHT, TRY IT!!!

Interesting. I enjoy the flavor of the “onion juice pockets” created as the onion shrinks. I also do a stuffed meatloaf that I specifically add in mushrooms for their juices they sweat out during the cook. You know how much mushrooms put out.
Stuffed meatloaf is here in this video

As a kid I’d watch my dad grill but was too hyper to see how it was actually done. As an adult I’ve use the gas grill; but I’m super curious how to use charcoal on my sportsman lodge grill.
I have a Dutch oven with a charcoal topping lid and I used it once by removing the inner guts of my broken old gas grill and putting down aluminum foil and placing charcoal from my chimney into the bottom and setting my Dutch over the top of the coals and adding some to the top. Where I failed was that I didn’t k ow I could or should add more charcoal as it was cooking.
Watching your videos, I see you use a chimney and I still see red charcoals. I have no idea when to add the charcoal to the bottom, like, when is the charcoal ready to use?
Also, when and what does the the draft door used/do? I heard you say it adjusts the temp, but I don’t understand why you said it gets hotter when it’s open, but then you close it and say you have more control.
I’m pretty sure with charcoal I can’t blow something up, but my dad passed in 2015; and I don’t really have dude friends, and my neighbor uses gas lol.
I need some serious coaching, but I really want to Master grilling. I have had my lodge grill about 5 years and haven’t used it and that’s such a shame. So I am on a mission to figure it out so when fallcomes I’ll be a grilling fool!!! I even have 3 big bags of charcoal and those light stick thingies that feel like particle board.
Any and all advice and video recommendations would be appreciated. I wanna learn to grill so someday if the world goes wacky, my 30 cast iron skillets and I will survive. Oh and can you use small slivers of chopped wood instead of charcoal??
