    In my mind your a legend! Marathon is brutal and Sunday was a brutal day. You've shown you're real, humble and are constantly learning an improving. Much harder to make this content when you're obviously disappointed but its much more valuable than people who pretend every race is perfect. Enjoy your holiday

    Oh Tommy I'm so sorry mate! When I was running past the 40k mark I recognised you and assumed you had already finished, that's why I yelled out "good run mate!". It was a very hot day mate! You gave it your all. Keep it up mate!

    Hey mate, I was racing too and that heat was honestly brutal! Sorry to hear the race didn't fully turn out like you hoped for but like you said shit happens and your health comes first, not a time. The hills were hard, especially around Pyrmont. I think from Centennial Park onwards was so hot as there was no cover from the buildings. So many people were collapsing the final 10km. Our biggest learnings can be made not from the successes but from our perceived failures. You've got the fitness and grit and it's just tweaking your pacing and nutrition strategy. Rest up legend.

    Bro, was right behind ya for most of the race and saw you kick the bricks. The route + heat was a fucking tough one, and those hills around Pyrmont was a grinder, I stuck it through with severe cramping at the 35k mark, and got tented after finishing (3:12:00) my whole diaphragm was cramped up & I could not move haha.

    I gave you a shout at about 15KM by Circular Quay and it was already cooking, you did well to get as close to the finish as you did. Chin up pal you'll crack it next year!

    Thank you for sharing this honestly. I was on the race as well and I blacked out around KM 40! I have never fainted before and did not remember anything prior to the black out. So dissapointing because this wasn’t my first marathon and I have run Bali and Singapore both were humid. Oh well.. lesson learned and will come back stronger!

    Mate - to hold that HR for as many km’s as you did is absolutely bonkers! So many 180’s there after already running like 20km’s… that’s extremely impressive but also so scary in the end obviously. But what it shows is the true grit and determination you had in pursuit of your goal and to put it all on the line like that. Such an inspiration mate, keep it up! 🔥

      Its all relative to his max hr. 180 means nothing without knowing his max hr

      @@buttsniffa7469 that’s true, it varies person to person. I’ve been following him awhile on here and Strava so I’m familiar with his usual HR’s. Also I’m not too sure of how many people have a max HR greatly exceeding 200, so even without knowing him one could assume that it’s relatively pretty high. But you’re right, it’s unique to the individual.

    i did my first marathon in Sydney 2023, inspired by your videos in past , i am from USA , but i have to admit it was well organized marathon and definitely deserve to be Major , regardless Sydney is a unique city though will vote for major status

    Good effort tommy!!
    I also took part in that marathon(1st marathon), I guess i should be glad that my legs cramped so bad it forced me to walk from the 25km mark to the end or else i would also keep pushing myself til and probably end up in a med tent as well… what a day that was, many lessons learnt

    mate glad you finish. You should be proud of overcoming this hard time. I got the 4:03 as well and had the biggest disappoint. so far off from my last worst marathon by miles and that was like years ago. I knew at 18km something was wrong when my body cramp. first right calf, then left and finally the right hamstring. once I knew my HR was at 180 at 22km I knew I blew it. So many times I was thinking of giving up, just rip the bib and head home. I even rang my partner whilst hopping along like a broken man. Then a bloke I saw who had the same issues said you can finish it, its just down there (another 15km ahah) that gave me a bit of hope. I dont think the course was too hilly but I think the last hill with that heat was a disaster. I am so pissed at the result considering the effort I put. I dont think I would go with Sydney Marathon next year if it is in mid September. It should have being late august or early September plus that 7am start time is ridiculous. I will be interested what learning you can get from this as I want to find out what I can do as well. Sorry enough of me rambling, you did great and well deserve break in Bali.

    Sydney and Melbourne should bring the start time forward to 6am like Gold Coast.
    I mean Melbourne is rarely gonna be over 30 in October but there’s always a chance.

      The Melbourne marathon starts at 7 however because its just after daylight savings starts its the equivalent of 6am

    Damn brotha that’s crazy to hear.
    I saw you at the finish line with nedd and told you I watch your channel etc & asked what time you got and you go “I don’t actually know because I blacked out” I didn’t think you actually blacked out till I saw your Insta… the heat was brutal man 28° when I finished around 4hours gun time!!
    My legs are fucked too man the last 2-3km of hills was next level pain

    I started the same way, got PRs for 15, 21 and 30kms. It bought me the time to slow down through centennial park. Came in at 3:57:00. That was my first one.

    as someone who lives in the south 75 degrees sounds amazing to run in lol but i guess if you’re not used to it you would struggle..glad you finished

    Hey brother judging from your training, you’re doing your long runs too fast, with a high heart rate, compromising your ability to develop that big aerobic diesel engine needed for long endurance races. Have a look at polarising your training. Long slower run sets for your aerobic engine. Fast speed sessions for your anaerobic capacity. Well done bringing it back and toughing it out mate 👊👊

    I had a similar experience, the heat messed me and i blew up bad at about 40km. Cramps so bad i couldn't sit down for half an gour after. Still managed to limp over the line though.

    Tough day mate. You should review your sodium and electrolyte consumption, especially in the days before the race. It is very high and can have a detrimental affect on your hydration.

    Tommy 2.50 pace, damn.. with all the respect for your effort but sometimes is not worth tommy. That you are there from an electrician and finishing an marathong being in a good aestethic body is an amazing achievement, take care of yourself more at the next one and very well done for that self push to the point where you pass out, epic mindset

    Taking too much sodium itself can create a sodium-potassium imbalance which can lead to muscle cramps, weakness and/or fatigue.

      Also high sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure. Taking more supps not always means better, we need to figure out the right amounts brother. I had the same issues and it took me a while and many failures to learn that, now it barely happens though 💪

    Wouldn't have been better to work out at the same time at least on the long runs if you already knew the start was at 7:00 in Sydney? You could have adapted to similar circumstances.

    Maybe your dietary fat levels are too low? Also you are relying on the liquid carbs/creating/pre workout which gives a huge energy boost and will push you beyond your bodies natural fitness limits. To test this out, try going for a run without the pre workout/liquid carb shakes/creatine and see how you feel. If you could do videos on that kind of thing, would be so interesting because a lot of ppl are struggling with performance nutrition and knowing what is safe for the long and short term.

    You got further than I did… I got to 30k, felt *really* bad, went into a medical tent, and they measured my BP at 60… cripes! Put me on an IV, pumped me with over a litre of saline over 90 minutes. Let me leave after my BP normalised, but the sweeper runner and bus had long gone… DNF and very disappointed. The heat was BRUTAL!

    I mean this respectfully - (Most importantly, I'm glad you're ok). Please don't let anyone convince you that running marathons is a healthy, impressive or intelligent thing to do for the body. There are many studies demonstrating that heart (muscle) tissue is found in the bloodstream after such events. Meaning, damage to the heart! Meaning, not good man! Couple this with inexperience, poor nutrition and the mentality that its good to ignore the body/'keep pushing'... and its a recipe for serious disaster, as you experienced. Please man, get real and look after yourself, and consider your long-term health. Again, I mean this out of genuine care and respect (and from the perspective of an ex-professional athlete and coach).

    Sounds like your blood pressure dropped and your heart was trying to pump harder in order to get blood and oxygen to your brain. I'd say you pushed it too hard and your body couldn't keep up. Listen to your body next time.
