Honestly I didn’t listen to this issue until you made your video. Booktok smashes us with controversy enough. But this review is interesting from the beginning so, let’s buy this book and read.
Couldn’t agree more, intricate prose describing action and environment truly is an art form of its own, to take something that could be a slog to read and make it poetically beautiful is a gift that only years of drafts give
I'm so glad this book was a hit!! Dragonheart x Princess Bride is such a good combo say no more
It's like a really good dish. It doesn't have to be complex, but if you have great ingredients and you know how to balance them well it can still be fantastic
"Doublugles" is an amazing name for a fantasy currency. 😂
Amazing what a collared shirt can do. Looking fresh as hell Daniel 🔥
(P.S. Princess Bride meets Dragonheart is all I needed to hear. Buying this to read to my daughter asap)
Oh you have sold me. I'm not a Last Unicorn superfan but the line 'the tiny dry sound of a spider weeping' is a turn of phrase that has never left me and I really would love to read more of his prose.
Very much agree on the point about fairy tales! That's a big part of why I love Robin McKinley's work. Of course she does amazing retellings (Rose Daughter supersedes all other conceptions of Beauty and the Beast in my mind) her original stories also have that ring of myth and tradition. Chalice I don't think is based on an existing fairy tale but it fits perfectly into that canon, as does The Blue Sword.
You had me at “dragons”! 🐉🐲🐉
I adore The Last Unicorn and this book sounds incredible. You sold me with fantasy satire that’s a cross between The Princess Bride and Dragonheart. Gonna have to pick it up soon.
When you said Princess Bride meets Dragonheart, you sold me. I’m buying this book now. I don’t usually do this.
Getting I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons released on your birthday seems like a dream, that's an amazing present!
0:54 I love your channeling of the explosives guy from Atlantis
Vinny I believe his name is.
I was already sold at "Dragons" but even more so by "DRAGON HEART". Bookstore trip this weekend. 🎶
Picked up a copy yesterday and will read it when I'm done with The Sword of Kaigen.
I've been waiting for this one! Thanks for owning up to that mistake.
If a rat problem had the chance to escalate into large, fire-breathing monsters, cats would be in every house by law to prevent it.
serious note, though, you going through how good the prose is, and the THINGS THAT ARE GOOD in that prose, i need to get this book, like yesterday. bc that's what i'm looking for, BIG TIME.
I like that cover. Is there anything better than a big ass dragon on a book cover?
I read the last unicorn for the first time this year and its my first peter s beagle book. I would say its my favorite book and its prose and humor one of the many reasons i love it. Im so happy and so so lucky hes releasing a new book so soon after i became a fan
Well damn. TBR updated.
“…and nobody else” 🤣 I just got my copy in today - the end pages are so cool! Can’t wait to start this as soon as I finish Dungeon Crawler Carl 2 (which I totally have a healthy, unremarkable attachment to. I did not binge 8 hours of the audiobook today at all) 👀🐲✨
I had no idea he was still writing. I will order this right away. It sounds great!
Positive comment
my copy arrived yesterday :)
can't wait to read it!!!
I read an arc for I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons and completely agree with you. The Last Unicorn is one of my favourite books and movies of all time and this new book from Beagle gave me the same feeling I had reading Last Unicorn for the first time. This is truly a book for all ages. Would love to see it as an adaptation.
Bought the book after watching your review. I knew I had to have it when you said it’s a combination of Princess Bride and Dragonheart! I also got a How to Train Your Dragon vibe from your description of it too
Great video Daniel!!!!
PS - love the cover to the book, now I gotta check it out!!!
Had to pick up a copy yesterday after your video!
there is a portuguese fantasy book i loooove that i wish had an english translation because i think both you and murphy napier would really enjoy 😢 it's called As aventuras de João sem medo and it is a portrait of portuguese society during the dictatorship disguised as a children's book but the prose is so good and the fantasy elements are awe inspiring. i loved it as a kid and i love it as an adult and am always surprised when a portuguese person doesn't know that book.
I'm so glad Peter Beagle is getting more notice! I love collecting his books, and he's an amazing man in person.
(Side fear, every time you throw that bottle in the air, my brain says "what if it sprays all over your books?" And I cry a little inside.)
I’ve been waiting for you to read Beagle!!! He’s one of my favorites!! Have you had the pleasure of reading The Last Unicorn or The Innkeeper’s Song? I’d love to hear your take on those.
Great review, I want to read his books. When I was a kid in early 90s I was obsessed with watching the The Last Unicorn, I think I wore out that vhs as well as Dumbo.
Peter S Beagle could write about paint drying and I would soak up every word, looking forward to picking this one up!
But man, Connor the conman really needs to get a life.
Definitely going to pick up this book 🙂
I went and listened to this book before finishing this video. What a great book. Your comment about it's prose was accurate. Its great, and dense in the best way. Literally my only issue with the story is that I wanted it to be longer. I wanted to spend more time in this world, learn more about the dragons, get more time with (redacted) together. If there's ever a sequel, I'm definitely getting it on release.
ooooooooo....a sequel....one can hope!
You had me at Princess Bride + Dragonheart
The cover is amazing!
Waiting to read this to my nephew, pre ordered it ages ago
Have you read T. Kingfisher? Her books are great fairy tale retellings.
And wouldn't 'nine goblins' be the ideal book of Kingfisher to start with?
I love Ursula Vernon/ T. Kingfisher's books!
@@sjiva7061 Thornhedge was incredible.
@@smittenforfiction it was! I loved it!
This book sounds wonderful, definitely keeping an eye out for if I see it in the bookstore
Damn Conner fucked up
YEEEEEEEES! I just got my copy and I'm SO excited to read it! Just gotta get through Words of Radiance, then I'll use it as a short break from the Stormlight Archive.
Last Unicorn is one of my all time top prose craft inspirations for a reason. Can't wait to read this one!
Yo, Daniel, the bookshelves are look'n reeaaalll snazzy. I like the cut of your jib, sir.
Hi, Daniel i am a new fan and all this taking about Dragon extermination and not wanting to do it reminded me of HTTYD(How to train your dragon) and wanted to ask if you have ever read the books?. If not would love a review 😊
I just got my copy! Haven't had it long enough to read it yet but this snobby little goblin ♥ the cover and endpapers. Love me a dragon!
getting this book ASAP😊😊
Buying now. Damn Daniel!
Bumping this to the top of my To Read list!
I recall reading this one long ago, it was so entertaining.
How would you compare this with Magic Kingdom for sale by Terry Brooks. One of my all time favorite books/series.
This Bad Boston Guy ist pretty expensive for only 460 Dragons, Hiccup could have handeld this way more efficient! Also welcome to the Chanel Bad Boston Baniel.
"Bad Boston Baniel" made me laugh harder than it probably should've
Great review! I really liked The Last Unicorn, but then tried Summerlong and although it was fine, I didn't enjoy it as much. You just made me quite excited to try I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons :D
I read it yesterday and found it unremarkable, tbh.
It didn't help that I literally read a kids book featuring dragons earlier this month. And despite being about 3.5 decades older it felt more progressive and creative than this.
grew up with and loved The Last Unicorn though! that cartoon still slaps
Thank you❤
I had to make a choice this month, between buying I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons or the Stardew Valley Cookbook. I went with the latter, but now I'm kind of wondering if I should've picked the former [especially since there's only around 4-6 recipes I can actually eat]. I'll get it eventually, though. It just might be a while. 😀 [The graphic novel version of The Last Unicorn is one of my most precious possessions.]
Boston Daniel needs an Oscar
Wait there are some actual dragons in this book with dragons in the titles?
8:21
So... we should try to understand them, even if theyre orange?
Completely agree on the point about fairytales. I recommend ‘House pf Rust’ by Kenyan writer: Kahdija Abdallah Bajabar. Especially first half
I hope there will be an audiobook
There already is
Really, it's not on audible UK it might take a couple of days to sail across the Atlantic @jamako732
I read I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons as an eARC and it was everything I needed -- fun, emotional, great prose, and -- of course -- dragons! Fantastic read. 🐉
As an aside, I’m digging the skits you seem to be doing more regularly lately.
Ever use them typewriters in the back?
If you want more fairy tale inspired fantasy I'd recommend you pick up any Patricia A. McKillip book.
A tip for dealing with your email harrassment: you can set up a rule in your inbox so that, for example, all emails from email address X are forwarded to email address Y and sent to folder Z or whatever you want. Then you don't have to see them or think about them! How to do this will vary between platforms I imagine.
That's super usefull!
I hope Boston Daniel becomes this channel's Cal Chuchesta
I think you might enjoy a series by Michael R Miller called song of chaos
Why is this ebook not available on Amazon Australia? The Hardcover is there. The German language Kindle version is there. I tried to get it from US amazon but it no like. sad face
Did you review it only because of the controversy or was it something that you would have been interested in regardless?
Oh yaaaay the mustache is gone whew
I am reading a book called A Witch's Sin Neon Ghost's Book 1, I think you'd like :)
You get you're a hug guy too, You give good not-retall, fairytail hugs , bro-huges too?
I have a recommendation.
It is legend of the galactic heroes.
Not gonna say no more as the blinder you are going in the better. I perfer the original ova anime over the books.
If all the things have been done, then just accept it and do the thing, but really well.
Dragons are nearly as bad as having Raccoons
Will the Vinland Saga read along series ever comeback
It wasn't getting as many views as One Piece or Berserk which is why he stopped it. He was reading the rest of it recently, or at least planning to, but he also thought the series was done when it still has a year or so to go. He might do a fuller look once he's caught up or it finishes.
He can keep his hair, but not his hands still.
All of them? All of the series?
You should grow out your moustache, it looked really good.
biue is you're colour
what the FUCK was that ACCENT
More than 2000 for a book. This is why people pirate books... Why don't authors localise prices like Brandon Sanderson? I can buy mistborn trilogy and first book of wax and wayne with that money and still have enough change for a good dinner... If these western authors just localise their book prices, they would have more readers...
I do not think that most authors are the ones making pricing decisions. I think publishing houses are the villains you're looking for.
I'm lucky I can walk at all with my foot in my mouth. I've insulted Mr. Greene with a previous comment. He deserves better.
Yeah, I pick things apart. It ruins everything I read.
Good people feel guilty. Bad people think the world is against them. This is all I've figured out in my life so far.
I know Daniel will block me, or already has but go see the Planet of the Apes movie. I don't understand why Daniel doesn't like them but they are transcendent. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is an origin story with only 15% action. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a tragic story of hope that fails. Dawn is more action, but is complex and nuanced. War of the Planet of the Apes is a tragic story that ends a character arc. War is full of unique characters that you become invested in. I saw the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes last weekend. The audience was transfixed. No one spoke or even moved. Everyone sat through the entire two and half hours without getting up. I've watched thirty reviews of Kingdom, and none were negative. One common view was, "The movie wasn't as cerebral as the first three but more emotional Kingdom is a drama with fleshed-out characters that all make sense. The female lead has this stone-cold persona which is confusing until you realize she has a mission, which she will do, regardless of the cost. Kingdom is going to be another character study of the main protagonist. This is a movie series of our time. I promise you, it's not shlock like Daniel claims. I don't know where the other movies are but go watch them. Please, believe me, the movies are way better than we deserve.
Did you watch to the end of this video? Daniel said you've convinced him to deep dive the series. You win - good job. Course, he said _every_ movie, not sure if that means going back to 1968, and Tim Burton. I'm a fan of the new trilogy myself - masterful films - have not seen the new one yet.
@@MagusMarquillin My bad. I listen to Daniel on my way to work. I also share a ride with someone. So, Ten Minutes of Daniel is a trade-off for minutes of country music. Seriously, that's a poor excuse for not watching the whole video. Honestly? Fantasy News makes my day. I listen on my way to work. Before my day starts, I try to write something. Daniel is going to do a deep dive? The old seventies moves were dated even for my ten-year-old mind. Time Burton's? Yeah no. Not a Burton-type project. I have to be more careful. Content creators are human, and everything we do either hurts or helps. I was doing the former not the latter. Sorry.
@@Kikilang60 I don't know what he meant by all - if your prior discourse was about the newer motion capture movies, then he's probably deep diving those. I kinda dig the original despite staring Heston though, so I don't mind if he's going deep deep diving. It be cool to try the original book also.
@@MagusMarquillin The author of the novel was Pierre Boulle. He also wrote Bridge over the Bridge Kwai, which was made into a movie. I had seen the movie, and someone gave me the book. I only remember the movie. I think the point of the bridge book was the British were as bad as the Japanese. The British loved the book and changed only one thing. In the movie, the commander destroys the bridge and dies doing it. In the book, the commander is killed by British commandos. Honestly, I just don't remember the book. At the time,I thought "Old people book."
