  • This week Casey and Brent talk about some fun hobby projects, why space wolves don't suck, 3d printing is still fun even if we have to jump through hoops, and most especially, why Nuln Oil is not a good friend and is holding you back...potentially anyways

    on the subject of OPR's minis, I feel like they are a bit meh when they ape warhammer, but when they do their own thing like with the "jackals" or "saurian starhost" or "duchies of vinchi" it's real good

    Get that little bit of "paint bravely inside you". Well said. May we all find ourselves there.

    I feel using 'shortcuts' matters more for how many models you want to paint. Like yeah for smaller games and single models you can do this but once you're talking 40k scale of easily dozens of models you see why washes dominate.

    I feel like I’m missing out on this static grass issue thing. I see people use the stuff all the time the regular way and it looks fine to me haha. Especially at the scale our miniatures are at

    The drop&paint kickstarter has not shipped my paints yet either, and I backed the full range on the earl bird special. They shipped out most of the small sets already but still working on getting the big once out. I live in Norway by the way

    I ordered the Kimera paints and they were held up in customs. TSA wanted a big form pledging that this was not a harmful chemical. Probably added a month to delivery while they sat in customs in New York. Worth the wait though!

    Warcry, Relicblade, and Moonstone is a trio on the lighter side of skirmish games. But I feel like the real struggle isnt finding the perfect rule set, its finding one with a local community. Doesnt matter how cool the game is if no one plays it... Shatterpoint is an example. Tried it out in a game demo at a store, picked it up, painted enough to play, but everyone would rather play Legion on the local star wars wargaming fans.

    I couldnt get my static grass applicator to work either. But I picked up a puffer bottle - basically an empty plastic bottle with holes drilled in the lid, Chuck in some grass and give it a squeeze. It makes application really easy for bases no messing with wires and batteries etc. Probably sucks for large applications though.

    Brent have you tried rubbing a balloon to create static charge and using that to stand up the grass? might be a super cheap option

    I made a bug zapper to static grass applicator this year. Be careful with the wire mesh when you disassemble because they are VERY sharp. Also I sacrificed a usb cord and soldered it in place of the batteries. Last thing I want is for the batteries to be dead

    I've stopped using washes when painting bright colors. I stick to just starting with my shade color as a base and build up layers to the color I want.

    Bizarre experience with bug-zappers: once zapped, I have been able to turn the wings on-and off repeatedly on both flies and mosquitoes. Not sure if this is super common, but have tried it a few times.

    Maybe I can only hear it because I'm using audiophile headphones, but often when Casey is talking (e.g. 14:20) I can hear the echo of his voice being picked up by the audio that's presumably leaking from Brent's earbuds reaching Brent's mic.

    Static grass applicators use a higher amount of static charge the flyswatters use so small amount of static electricity they just don't function well at all when to mod them out

    Washes work good for textured models, but painting a space marine you get way more out of black primer, white zenithal, and then airbrushing your basecoat leaving the undersides mostly black. Washing power armor always makes the model look like crap to me and creates a ton of work to get your basecoat back to where you want it.

    @PaintBravely If your 2mm static grass is standing straight up when using the applicator, then it is working correctly. At about 4mm, you will actually be able to hear that 'woosh' sound that you are expecting.

    I can see using the static grass applicator on a mini being difficult, but using it to make your own tufts might work well. Dobs of hot glue (or some kind of rubbery glue) on wax paper then static grass it. Maybe?

    • @Alric66
      @Alric66 Před 9 měsíci

      You can use just little drops of Elmer's glue on wax paper to make tufts. Not as flexible but otherwise they work just fine.

    • @Winterydee
      @Winterydee Před 9 měsíci

      I believe typically most people use PVA glue (aka white glue most commonly used by elementary school) for making DIY tuffs.
      Also, this is done on parchment paper for cooking. Yes the same kind of parchment paper used in DIY wet palettes.

  • @EDSKaR

    I made a bug-zapper static grass applicator and... yea it doesn't work. It sort of makes some of the grass stand up, but not well enough to glue upright, and most of it just falls over anyway :(

  • @Alric66
    @Alric66 Před 9 měsíci

    I've had good results with my applicator, I don't use it much due to cleanup afterwards,

    • @Winterydee
      @Winterydee Před 9 měsíci

      Best trick I've seen for clean up is a shop vac with a nylon stocking over the smallest hose attachment to block the extra static grass from being sucked into the vacuum.

  • @zosoknight
    @zosoknight Před 9 měsíci

    I just want a bit of effect and not hyper realism. The applicator is so fiddly and makes way more of a mess than having erect grass on a D&D mini base is worth.
