      Hi mate, thank you for the research and sharing it with us and happy new year!
      I am the lucky owner of a 2011 n20 engine. No sign of failure so far but I am getting close to the 85 000km mark.
      Could you please share some sources/documentation/evidence you used regarding the n20 timing chain issue?
      I have asked bmw France on this but they keep denying everything.
      Thanks in advance.

    If your X3 is over 5 years and has over 100k miles, the plastic charge pipe that brings air from the supercharger to the throttle body is most probably brittle and will crack, especially where it connects to the throttle body. When this happens, you will get a check engine light with a mass airflow sensor error & the X3 will run very rough and stall. If you take it to a BMW dealership, they will charge thousands and replace the sensor and put another plastic BMW charge pipe. The sensor doesn’t need replacing, it will start working once you replace the broken pipe. I ordered an aluminum after market charge pipe from ECS Tuning for $340 and replaced the broken one in under 2 hrs. Any repair shop can order an aftermarket charge pipe and install in under 2 hrs costing you $600 or so. I Hope this helps anyone looking to buy a used X3.

    Thanks! You saved me the misery of a timing chain failure during a vacation into Utah hundreds of miles from any BMW dealer. I listened to the engine the week before and the high pitched whine was very clear even below 3000 rpm. BMW replaced the timing and oil pump chains and tensioners for free because I was 2,000 miles below the 70,000 mile extended warranty.

    In 2016, I bought a 2014 X3 that had 25K miles on the odometer. The X3 had been leased by a young mother who had a toddler. So I assumed that she had driven it with care. Six and one-half years later I'm still loving the X3. It feels sporty and has very good acceleration. The "Sport" setting really makes a difference when you want to have a little fun. I once drove an X5 as a "loaner" and it did not feel as good as the X3. The X5 had power but not much "sport". The only issue I've had is that the electric switch for the tail gate went bad. I've also had the fan belt and battery replaced, which is considered normal maintenance. No major problems at all. My X3 still "gets looks" even though it's 8 years old now. I'm glad I have it.

    • @leiflillandt1488
      @leiflillandt1488 Před rokem

      When talking about the electric switch of the taile gate. Do you mean the outer handle. Is/was it a faulty micro switch in the handle.
      I bought six weeks ago a 2011 with power tail gate and the outer handle doesn't work, so I have to open it with the key fob.

      I got a 2015 bmw x3 with 106k miles, driven since 40k miles almost 4 years later. Cars basically paid off and still has relatively low miles.
      I’ve replaced, serpentine, alternator, 2x battery, tires 2x, brakes once, done coolant/tranny flush, regular oil changes etc. I have some money set aside for a timing chain which is inevitable in any car w one pretty much. Car still drives mint. Interior is mint. I have some exterior damage from a tire that blew off and struck me on the highway, but other than that it’s really just a dented fender and the fog light assemble. The cars paid off, these are cheap in this year / range. Mines an sdrive28i in case any one is still reading lol. I’ll update cus I wanna drive this car as long as I can.

Only other problem at 100,000 miles needed new transfer case, was quoted 5300 euro by BMW. I found a guy in Germany who recons and did the whole job for 1300 euro, excellent job.

    I have a 2011 F25 x20d, i think the transfer case vibration is very common on X3 and X5, luckily the repair is much more cheaper and easier now. and i would like to add that the ABS sensor will need to be changed after 100-120k KM, otherwise it will cause vibration and faulty signal and AWD system will not function.

    Wow, you hit most of the hot spots. Our 2011 X3 F25 with xDrive 35i has had most of these issues. Fortunately, we bought a Certified Used car and the Extended Maintenance Warranty which covered the problems.
    One thing you barely mentioned was the electric water pump. At 85k, ours gave the Overheating warning and entered Limp mode. Shutting down the engine and restarting gave a warning that if it happens again to contact the BMW Service Center. It drove normally without the Check-Engine light. Well, it happened 3 more times on our trip home. Each time, I checked that the engine was actually NOT overheated and continued driving home and to the BMW dealer. A trusted BMW mechanic told me that he replaces 4-5 BMW electric water pumps per week! Apparently, the water pump can become unreliable and trigger the warning before it actually fails. If it actually fails, lots of expensive damage can occur if you continue driving.

    I also realized that BMW dealer charges 2 hour labor fee for 30-45 minute labor. Air filter change did not take more than 20 minutes to a person like me, they charged me for 1 hour labor. For oil change 1 hour labor, For coolant reservoir replacement 3 hour labor. I am being looted by BMW dealership. It is better to find a local geek who can fix everything for less.

    What is considered as a long journey? How many km is too little to drive with diesel engine car?

    • @gamingradeon
      @gamingradeon Před 4 lety +2

      I’m pulling this out of my ass, but I think journeys, that don’t even let your engine warm up fully. Also, it’s important for the catalytic converter to heat up as well (which takes longer). Personally, my diesel engine runs wayyy better after a long journey (200km or so), even few days after it has finished.

    Bought this brand new in 2014. I have 106K miles. Glove box peeled. Fixed it with glue. I heared the problems with the engine N20. I still owe money on it. Is the 2018 X3 any good? Let me know.

    Great video 👍 Won’t the 2.0 diesel suffer from timing chain issues?

    • @differentcarreview-dcr
      @differentcarreview-dcr  Před 6 lety

      it should not, altough it can be worn before 200 000 km
      the regular oil changes are very important and they can extend the lifetime of the timing chain

    • @Elaba_
      @Elaba_ Před 6 lety +2

      The timing chains wear out because of the design of the sprockets. The sprockets are too sharp and destroy the timing chain. The engine needs to be removed to replace the timing chain.

    This video isn’t 100% correct, I have a 28i from 2013, the timing chain issue happened at 59k , they put their new engine with the new fixed timing chain as it was under warranty still, the new engine has always sounded like this even with a brand new engine and turbo installed from BMW , so take this video with a grain of salt because the wine shouldn’t be that high but there should be some sound as it’s a tiny engine with a turbo pulling air

    Bought used 2012 bmw x3 35i in 2019. Had 56k miles. Had OFHG leaked which led to serpentine belt slip. Luckily did not get sucked in. Pullies replaced, valve cover gasket leak (replaced plugs and coils when that was fixed). Glove box and drivers side door peeling issue. Have just now hit 80k miles. Would I buy again? Probably not. Still a great vehicle. Just be prepared.

    Great review. I bought a brand new x3 2016 and had the brakes changed after 10,000km. My run flat tyres never lasted more than 18,000km. Gearbox wouldnt shift passed 6 gear, corrosion under the hood when it was delivered...etc...Dumped it after 2 years with 38,000km as I didn't want to change the tyres again. Bought a Peugeot 5008 GT Line and never looked back. Bmw had terrible service and the car was a lemon. Never again.

  • @saf2127
    @saf2127 Před rokem

    DON’T. My 2014 X3 3.0i blew its engine at 82k miles, likely because of the damn timing chain issue. BMW did help me with engine replacement costs, but it was still $5500. Oh, and literally a week before the engine committed suicide, my a/c compressor failed. There goes another $4000. This is on a car with 82k miles, which I purchased certified pre-owned, maintained fastidiously and exclusively at the BMW dealer, and never drove hard. Because I sank so much money into fixing my albatross (thanks, historic car shortages!), I’ve committed to driving this damn thing till the wheels fall off out of spite. After it dies, though, I am never owning a BMW ever again. And this is coming from a lifelong BMW diehard.
