- I drive and tell you the story of this E28 5 Series. I saw it on Instagram and just had to do a video on it. How cool is this BMW Rat Rod? This car is the pet project of a car mad girl called Bobby, I'm sure you'll agree she's done well.
Thank you for the lovely comments guys, it’s been a great pleasure to film for Jack’s channel and I look forward to his next videos =)
Congrats on your nice car, and thanks for sharing.
It was a long time ago since I saw and 520 here in Sweden, on exhibitions most are 535 these days.
On a daily basis I never ever see a e28, apart from my own of course ☺
Nice car, kudos Bobby, one of "I wish I still had"
Nice car, I had an e30 323i, similar engine to yours, it was a blast to drive and i loved it. Yours is very nice and looks awesome. Cheers!
Love this era of BMWs, which is more than can be said of the companies current offerings. I was lucky enough to own a 1982 E21 323i and later a 1986 E30 320i. During the late 80s early 90s.
Massive fan of the e12 & e28. These came from a time when BMW created really great machines 😎
Same here. Absolutely adore the E12 and E28, I feel very lucky to own one.
Never thought I'd see a BMW with Rat Fink prominently displayed on the sides. Gotta love that. 👍
Interesting story, thanks Jack, & well done to Bobby for all the hard work & time she put into this car!
Thanks chap!!
My cars don't have a lot of power but drive well and I find them way more satisfying to drive than some more powerful cars I've owned in the past. Well done Bobby for getting this car back onto the road so that it can be used as it was always intended to be.
This is the perfect match for the Bismerk!
Really enjoyed the life story of a car enthusiast, great work by Bobby making something her own.
Not sure about the colour scheme, but not everyone has the same taste. Very impressive diy work whoever completed the work.
Wow! Fantastic work Bobby. Amazing car.
I loved this episode; the old BMWs are so cool. I used to see a late model E17, a 525i, on my way back from highschool in the late 80s; it would always be parked by the sidewalk. think it was the fully loaded version because it had BBS wheels and a sun-roof. It was obviously well taken care of, always very clean. I wonder what happened to it, I hope someone’s still taking good care of it…
They are lovely cars .. would love to have one. Very cool!
There is no such thing as an E17.
You probably mean an E12.
It's not just the big saloons they wiped out. Back when I was a young whippersnapper with a company car (anyone remember them?) we had a choice of BMW's, Rovers, Audis and a couple of other brands and almost everyone in my bracket would go for a base as fuck 316i over a fully loaded Rover 45 or 75. Wasn't a problem for the higher ups, they all got a 328i, which was a fantastic car in 2001.
Love that Bobby did much of the work on her e28 herself. As a current e28m5 owner, I'm a little bias on the e28 and enjoyed watching her car develop on IG over the years. Well done Bobby!
I'm absolutely impressed with the dedication (and skills) to get this car to this condition and whilst the rat look isn't my passion I don't think I have ever seen such amazing graphics and those period wheels look really at home. Incidentally even when I bought a new 520i SE in 1996 I'm pretty sure the radio still wasn't a standard feature.
That car is packed full of character and great choice. Fantastic amount of work well done Bobby!
My first car was an E28, beat the living daylights out of it having so much fun. Such fond memories... Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks chap!
The e28 520i is such a lovely car. I had 2 of them in younger years. Loved them. So reliable - and so relaxed on the Autobahn. Not as much fun as an 535 - but a great daily driver. As you said: The 520i is not very fast - but fun to rev.
I have an E46 touring but the E28 is without a doubt my favourite BMW.
Love it. Thanks. Be well and stay safe.
A good mates dad had one of these back in the day….. I remember a day trip out on a hot summers day with my mate and is parents in the BMW , me and my mate obviously in the back seat driving along when from absolutely know where my mate vomited strawberry milkshake all over me and the back seat 😂🤣. I have fond memories of the old BMW 🤣😂
I used to have a really rusty rat rod e28 535i manual with LSD and all new bushings/suspension. It was a blast and one of the most fun cars I’ve ever owned.
I had 3 E28 528's & just loved them. Would be great if you did a series on one. Great show.
Thanks Alan!!
Owning 3 e28's in the past perhaps YOU should do a series lol, you'd know more than most
absolutely adorable! and what a chunk of work Bobby did ❤️ I'm not on insta but stories like this one make wanna see you car lovers doing good things after I've given up with Volvo last year and moved on
I have fond memories of this era of BMW's having once owned the E29(?) - 1991/H plate - 520i SE 5 speed manual 24 valve variant.
It was; for a 2 litre; very thirsty - drinks more than me 🍻🍻 - but that lovely throaty roar really got my Dander up. For a heavy car it handled exceptionally well and a 'cruise' at speeds I won't disclose on public chat was effortless.
Well worth the restoration. Huge thanks for posting this 👊👍.
Thanks Graham and glad you enjoyed the video!
This must have been an E34- absolute lovely motors!!!
Nice one Jack, interesting wrap like you said, I used to have a BMW 528i many years ago and absolutely loved it, I can remember towing my caravan for the first time with it on the motorway, went to overtake three slow wagons and when it was clear to pull back in I was doing 90 mph I almost sh@# myself , I was very careful after that,👍👍.
I had a 520i with LE jetronic back in the late 1990's as a late teenager. Fantastic car. Just wish I kept it and resorted it to a reasonable condition. Proper smoooth mobile. Friends loved the lounge experience. Two peeps in the boot with ease. I miss it so much.
t was such a such step up from the usual teenage cars of the time, such as a cavalear, sierra or maestro.
Well done Bobbi for making such an interesting classic. love it loads.
And now BMWs are chav chariots.
Bobby is such a great girl, genuine car enthusiast not a woman who does it for attention. Massive respect for Bobby!!
I love that
What a cool motor
Those wheels are just class
Reminds me of a film set in Berlin , bourne identity maybe
Going in i didn't feel what i thought was a rather molested BMW E28. ..but hearing the story of how hard Bobby worked to fix the car, seeing some of the work that went into it, i even ended up loving the wrap. I would keep such a BMW classy, but i absolutely love this one. It's cool af. Kudos Bobby. Well done :)
I was expecting an interview/conversation with the owner. She did something unique and should take a bow. Nice little piece for the channel. I am guessing that if you pull the engine on the Ferrari that it will force you to deal with it by taking up a full space in your garage and keep you free of distractions. And if you document the rebuild of the Ferrari engine, you will draw a big audience, and also that will keep the channel filled with videos for much of the summer. Keep Bismerc as the shop car, leave the Lexus for a charity auction...and give full focus on the Ferrari. Drive other peoples cars for fun and additional videos...but get the Ferrari where you can either sell it or drive it with total enjoyment.
Hey John.. sadly but understandably she didn’t want to talk on camera! I have another coming where the female guest is front and centre!!
Great car and I absolutely love the wrap. Shame we didn't get some words from Bobby herself to explain the work she did.
I would have liked that too.. she didn’t feel comfortable enough on camera for that!!
@@Number27 Yes I figured that was the case. Still a great story.
Beautiful and an such inspiring story!
A friend had a 528i. Very nice. That one is nuts, love it.
Great old cars! Great vid...cheers!!
The price difference was huge back in '85, my dad test drove a 518i, I think it was an se but still very basic and no discounts were offered. Where for the same money he got a discount and goodies thrown in for the same price to get into a 'new' shape Granada 2.8i GL. They were pricey but the build quality was much better in the BMW. An underrated car was the 323i, these were quicker and more practical than a 628i and very reasonably priced. By '86 though you could get into an HF4wd for less than 16k but the press had killed Lancia with the engine falling out story.
Well done to her for doing lots of the work. It's a shame the car looks so horrendous.
These were very solid hefty well put together cars. We had several M535i versions at the garage I worked at in the ‘80s in both dogleg manual and automatic guises. They were pretty quick but felt a lot more of a barge compared with the equivalent 3 Series at the time. The wrap on the car is definitely amusing and I like the way she’s leaning into the ratty aesthetic.
That car is a work ov art love it
awwww was looking forward to an interview , with Bobby......
Sorry… I was too.. she didn’t want to be on camera apart from the shots I got..
Love the paint job
I had two of these cars, a 1983 528i Auto and an 86 528i manual which had BBS wheels, I preferred the auto, however I stripped the head down on the manual , polished the ports, re-bed the valves and it sounded awesome. I only got rid of the manual as it was in a heavy rear end shuts that bent the bodywork.
What a coincidence, i currently own both a e28 528i manual and a e28 528i automatic.
The automatic one is pretty rusty and has a rotten interior so its going to be used as parts for the manual one (engine and other parts). The manual one was overheated and blew a head gasket (or warped head) by the previous owner, normally i would just take the head off and attempt fix the original engine but it had sat for about a decade with water in the oil so when i took the valve cover off it looked like someone had filled it with coffee grinds, the engines probably still saveable but would need to be rebuilt.
"i'll tell you later about the coilovers" , mmmn.
does bobby not want to rent your spare bedroom, that would be handy...
enjoying these little road-tests, keep up the good work young man
saw this at ultimate bmw the other week .... great work ...
call it what you like , a rod it will never be !!!!
What a cool car. Love the wrap. Well done Bobby :)
Thanks chap!! Hope you endnotes Easter!
Enjoyed not endnotes!
I used to own this exact car in my youth. Nice driver but it literally rusted to pieces haha. Still my favorite BMW though. The new Beemers are absolutely horrendous but this era was great.
Agreed!!!
Nice 😎
I owned an e12 520/6, loved that car.
As of Jan' 87', the base BMW 520i was £12395; Ford Granada 2.0i Ghia was £12671; Mercedes 190 was £12590 (the 200 was £14660); Vauxhall Carlton 2.0i CD was £12796. Prices courtesy of Autocar.
And for the money the BMW and Mercedes wouldn't come with a radio probably extras where as the Granada was top spec Ghia trim and Carlton CDi trim. Fully loaded with power roofs, windows etc. No doubt the German cars better built but poor value for money for most people.
@@redlineste4283 I agree; anyone in the market for a Granada or Carlton wouldn't have even considered a 520. As for killing off the 'cheaper' large saloons, there are plenty of Mondeos, Insignia, Lagunas, etc around here, but very few of the larger BMWs.
cool painting 🥰
I like hotrods, but there is no place in my garage, so I built one for my living room in scale 2:3 with a Jukebox functionality 😅
Fantastic!! Thanks for watching!
@@Number27 If you are interested, there is a video on my channel, I wonder what you think about it 😁
@@Number27 Thanks for the feedback, I have some other cool ideas for the jukebox, so feel free to subscribe me. 😌
@@Number27 I'm looking for people who share the idea of the jukebox, so maybe you'd like to put the video on your community tab?
Great car to see, fab job, thanks.
Great to see a story on women who are into cars. Pity we did not get to hear from her
She don’t want to be on camera sadly.. have another video coming up though where the girl is properly interviewed
My bro put headers on a 79 , 4 speed , 3 liter inline 6. A beast. And reliable
Well done Bobby! I am proud of you ❤️
The e28 was one of the smartest steps that led BMW from a quirky car maker to a name to be considered among the major brands in the world. The 3 series was doing fine, but they had to step up their range for larger luxurious cars, aimed at Mercedes-Benz. And tehy succeded, an forced Mercedes Benz to come after them with the w201 series. Meanwhile other volume brands were content with small size high number models, they built the foundation of what German car industry would become.
Great car Jack , thanks for sharing, love these restos with a story the E28's really look very cool now. Values are on the rise and an '85 leggy BMW E28 M535i 3.4 Manual for £16k caught my eye on the Bay of E..
Wicked car, great vid
Driving Harry’s test roads 🧐
I love. Loser to that road than Harry does!! Drive it almost every day.
Ha. Good man. Of all the roads…..That ‘compression’ section looks fun
Yes, they felt really familiar 😋
Get one Jack ask Harvey how much his 528i has gone up in value 👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧
`Love it and love the wrap too! Character and class all in one package! Not for the purists, but who cares! Well done Bobby!
What a cool daily! Those roads are the same where Harry Metcalfe does his reviews, right?
I've got several interesting cars! But I'm in the states... feel free to drop by any time though!
Ah thanks Tim and a big wave to the 🇺🇸!!
When I saw the thumbnail to this vid I thought, awesome Jack's bought another shed to do up! Sorry Bobby 😳😅
🤣🤣🤣
The wheels look great on it
1 computer for PayRoll. Mega story line. Funny.
This video brings back great memories 🤗 lovely car love it 😍 i had a 525 auto in pink 🤔 or was it suposedto be red 😅 anyway it looked like absolute 🐕💩 but it was such a good car so dependable never let me down 💪
Back in the 1980s, Vauxhall's and Granada's, were very "working class man has a few quid", Rover a bit posher, BMW, sporty middle classes, mercedes, posh, Volvo, middle class but only interested in function/anti fashion. Never really a direct competitor.
I thought that the Granada mk2 and Vauxhall Carlton (well, actually an Opel Rekord with a new nose) were German designed and made………..so, perhaps the description of the 5-series might be better described as premium German?
Interesting fact. The first production car designed on computer (using CAD) was the Leyland 18-22 series, otherwise known as the Leyland Princess.
Ha!! Not a successful first attempt then!
She’s got a great car….. best of the beemers……had one as a rep car in the 80’s….1.8 underpowered but handled beautifully..😎👌🏼
Even had to put in my own Pioneer stereo😂
Reminds me of a Mercedes you just repainted...
Reminds me of a certain MB 😀
Très bonne idée.
Je veux la même !
Rat look. Never been sure. But….. it’s another genre of car so cannot be a bad thing
Nice 👌
That road looks extremely similar to where Mr. Metcalf tests...
We used to have and E28 some years ago and it was a fantastic car. Sadly it got totalled by some muppet who didn’t know how to drive!
All good fun for a generic Beemer but I hope she doesn't get a hold of a Miura or a 250 SWB...
My other cars are nothing like this ratty look :)
To be fair even the Germans offer every class of SUV these days. Take Mercedes GLA/glb/glc/gle/GLS, bmw does the same. The Evolution of the car has done full circle. People want a high upright seating position vs sedans and coupes are more laying down.
Fun car
How does the ULEZ scheme affect your use of the car if you are still living in the East End of London - as I'm sure that old a Beemer is not compliant for the emissions to meet the ULEZ standard?
Perry sure it’s old enough to be ULEZ exempt
I moved out to a house with a garage not long after the restoration. The area I moved into will be affected next year…
3:50 hang on, let me change gear... to the same gear. Wait, what? Concentrate, Jack :)
🤣🤣
I will never drive a German car, they make the best beer 🍺 though
Cool car & owner!
All E28 520i had 125hp.
Early 90’s I had the choice of a ’86 520i or the similar-but-cooler Fiat Argenta 120ie (122hp). Never regretted choosing the Fiat (still got it) but a nice 528i/535i would still be a nice garage addition!
''A sense of fun'' you mean like, painting a car like a spitfire, never understood why you disliked the merc so much.
Ti me it looked shit.. plus this is reversible. The Merc wasn’t! This is done properly and the Merc was done on the cheap!!
BMW made some really good cars but they seem to attract so many aggressive drivers (particularly in Germany) that they have kind of been brought into disrepute.
That’s Audi drivers nowadays.
Please do let Bobby add a wrap to the Bismarck - what would she do to that car?
Ha!! Yes that would be awesome!
Nah, the BisMerc is still recovering from its last traumatic decoration. I think it looks classy these days. Please pick another victim....
No link to her instagram? not entirely fair to her :/ Come on, share the link in the description.
You still full time on utube? Where is the Ferrari?
Coming soon… prob week after next!
Not even zee Germans have managed to do that to the North American car manufactures saloon cars................unfortunately
I'm afraid your content is wavering, used to love the Ferrari videos. Now I'm not sure what your doing ?
Start your own channel then...
Saving up for bits of Fezza?
Creating varied content, fortunately .
Hey Gerry, thanks for the feedback! More InfluEnzo videos coming next week. I can’t make a living from a channel where I exclusively fix broken Ferraris, I don’t have the resources. . I’ve also been doing videos of work on my Lotus, the W124 Merc.. what is it you’d ideally like me to do? It’s a shame you don’t enjoy the varied content but I’m not going to apologise for featuring cars like this. I like unusual cars and think they are worth showing!
The variety is really good!
Sorry Jack, that kind of content doesn't do you any favour.
Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy it.. would be useful to get feedback on what you didn’t like.
