  • Birthday gift for my wife. She always wanted a fireplace, quick and easy, much cheaper and cleaner than conventional.

    Joe, Great work! We often advise our customers how to build their fires with Gel of Bio Ethanol inserts, you seemed to have done a great job!

    I used a tile adhesive from home depot for the ceramic and a sanded grout. You could use a porcelain if you are concerned about the heat. The backer board is attached to the studs. From what I read before I built this fireplace, the gel is like burning a candle in a box. They do sell a metal firebox that you can build around, which is probably the safest way to go.

    awesome. just what I needed to know!

  • @kaivdifer
    @kaivdifer  Před 10 lety +1

    No. Venting is not needed. It is about the same as having a lit candle sitting inside. At the end of the fuel, when the can is just about empty, it tends to have a scent, kind of like after a candle is snuffed out, it has an odor, but it only lasts for about 10 minutes or so.

    This is great. I have only just heard about gel fires. I love the fake chimney breast. Would it have been possible, in theory, to incorporate a cupboard above the fireplace, or would this be unsafe for storage due to rising heat?

    Really impressive build. I really wasnt sure, but it came together in the end once it was all trimmed out. Whats the approx dimensions of your firebox? I am about to build similar, but I've been getting more and more concerned about fire safety. What do you think is a safe distance to keep above the gel cans? My firebox will be made of cement board and grouted glass mosaic tile. Also, do you know what brand your log set is?

    • @kaivdifer
      @kaivdifer  Před 10 lety

      I have about 16 inched from the top of the can to the top of the firebox. this has not seemed to be an issue. the log set was an odd lot from a gas fireplace store. I paid about 50 bucks for it, out the door.

    Great video. What adhesive and grout did you use? Any special heat resistant or flexible type? Did you attach the backer board directly on studs? Did you have any problems with ceramic tiles cracking because of the heat? I don't know if I should use ceramic or porcelain.

    Hey Joe, Nice job. I only can read the comments posted below and not any of your answers. Can you tell which Gel log set you used? RealFlame makes one that I was considering for a similar project. Thanks

    • @kaivdifer
      @kaivdifer  Před 10 lety

      the log set was purchased at a gas fireplace store which was an odd lot in the back of the store, not sure of the name. The real flame is what we use in ours. good luck

    • @kaivdifer
      @kaivdifer  Před 10 lety

      the real flame gel is what we use, still not sure of the log set. I know they are for a gas fireplace.

  • @thelowcarbchronicles9059
