And this is one of many reasons why my current win10-gone-11 laptop will be my last windows machine (only reason why I didn't ditch windows now is because it has super-proprietary drivers that would break for sure, I'll at least wait until it inevitably becomes too old and slow for win11). Next PC will be an ubuntu desktop, now that gaming is finally decent (and for the first time actually a step UP from win11) due to the Steam Deck forcing every developer to support Linux. And there also seems to be a Onedrive cloud sync for its file manager now too, and Canonical even seems to have been developing an optional Copilot-like ChatGPT project of its own (sans spyware) to bring Ubuntu into the 2020s. Also it comes with LibreOffice (which can seamlessly save all my homeworks to the MS formats), which I am currently using right now anyway since the win11 versions now take up as much ram as some games and I'm taking a stats class that requires complex analysis tests like ANOVAs (which Calc has but MS Excel doesn't focus on)
I still consider XP to be the peak of windows operating systems. It was stable, you could run the old stuff as well as the new, you could still get under the hood and make your own adjustments and tweaks. It was just awesome. I still keep an XP machine running at work for a few programs that I like those versions better than the new ones.

It wasn't until Vista when some much needed improvements came such as GPU accelerated desktop composition, per process volume controls, user-mode drivers that can be installed/restarted without reboots, and suspend to disk, just to name a FEW. From a technical standpoint, XP is fecal-infused garbage. Microsofts greatest sin was keeping it alive so long.
In fact if you're not a PC gamer I hear rumors that a lot of people still actually do use Windows XP you just need Internet protection when using an older version of Windows I used an emachine with only 2 cores for casual browsing perfectly fine and it felt like it was time travel you can only sync time on the government network though if you do want to download software and use it in 2024 for some reason apparently the government also favors older versions of Windows I don't blame them.

My first computer was Windows 95. I can remember by the time XP came out with better graphics, ram, etc. I thought it was so fast and cool 😅 look at how far technology has come

Best OS in entire Microsoft Winows history. No BSODs, errors, lagging, I could choose, if I want to update or not, used less resources, everything was better about it compared to modern OSes. In the 1990s and 2000s, everything was quality over quantity, nowadays everything is quantity over quality.
Don’t sleep on the old Dell PCs. Back in the day I had a dimension 8400 with a hyperthreading P4 and an Nvidia 6800. Came with XP media center edition 2005. Played a ton of COD2, FEAR, BF2, etc. and they all ran butter smooth until that fateful day in 2007 when I decided to install halo 2 and windows vista 😢

Dell Dimensions were THE corporate computer in the 00s. I had such a love-hate relationship with them. super efficient design, made to be so easy to service...by swapping out intentionally proprietary parts. That power button was so easy to find by touch in cubicles where the box was kept on the floor.

Microsoft isn't stopping us from using older versions of Windows so I plan on ptobably using Windows XP as my main desktop and I will turn my Windows 10 into a Steam Machine I already got it dual booted with SteamOS for future proofing in theory it might be possible to play Steam games on Windows 7 in 2023 if you're using SteamOS on a virtual machine but just to play safe I would just dual boot it for now.

I wish i knew which brand our 2001 PC was (i think it was Fujitsu Siemens). I was 16 and came back home and it was there. 15" Flatscreen on the desk and under it a white tower with Athlon 1200, 128 MB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 32 MB, and I think it was a 20 GB Harddrive inside. My mum took a rather nice pick. And on that HDD was Windows ME. At that time I didn't know how crappy that version of windows was. But I learned and got a CD with Win 2k Pro from my next job. That machine got me really into the computing world.
I was looking in the basement for vhs tapes to watch for movie night and I found a drawer. I opened it and found a old gateway windows xp laptop. I love it! PINBALL and solitare is great!

Spinning hard disks will soon be forgotten by the newer wave of computer users. A lot of people forget they once had to "spin up" before you could start.
Oh man these pentium 4 dells take me back… I have so many Dell laptops from this era. Honestly Dell’s best and worst era at the same time. Many of them were good, but some were neglected by Dell and made obsolete before they could even really be useful. Plus many also cook themselves to death without good repairs and checkups. Glad to see you got one got one in good shape! You should totally max out the CPU and RAM. These machines deserve that kind of love.
This throws me back to 2010 when I got the Dell Dimension 3000 for Christmas. Played Flight Simulator 2000 and The Sims 1 and 2 on it. Definitely good times

I was assistant teacher in a physics class in 2019 and the professor I was shadowing shows up on the first day with an ancient XP laptop😂😂 he called it Little Beast because the little beast did everything he wanted and was a “no BS machine”
I remember having one similar to this - they were a nice machine. On mine the bottom flap opened up to reveal some ports if I recall correctly. The case also opened up on a hinge - it was like playing an accordian, opening and closing the case.
