I love the relatability that some scenes in the show present. Just as you said about the Bi-awakening with Keira and Orlando in Pirates, we can see other really relatable moments: the “Am I gay” research for instance, or the way people say inconvenient things thinking they are doing good (Imogen ally talk or the girl on rehearsal telling Tara that she’s so brave). I think that’s one of the things that made people really connect with the show, cuz if it was just the good and beauty of being LGBTQIAP+, it would be nice but not the most believable, and with those tiny bits of relatable experiences, they not just make it more realistic, but easier for people to connect. Alice Oseman is really a genius!

That and the Star Wars prequels were literally my bisexual awakening. I was sitting there as a tween like, “Why do I fancy Obi-Wan AND Padme/Will AND Elizabeth?” Then I realised I had a crush on one of my friends at school and had to do some investigation, same as Nick.

honestly, as a bisexual? nick's confusion is really relatable to me, and it never really fully goes away. i'm 100% confident in my identity as bi, i've dated people of all genders and persuasions and loved it every time - but every so often i wonder if i'm just making it up. i tend to lean more towards men (not consciously - i've just dated more men than women, and am currently dating a man) and the thought of "i'm probably just gay and in denial" does come up every so often. it's a staple of bisexuality, pretty much - and i figured it out when i was younger than nick (i'm 18 and have been semi-openly bi since i was 9) so i'd imagine it's way more confusing for him.
i totally get what ur saying, about gay people sometimes viewing bisexuality as a stepping stone in their personal journeys and therefore some unfortunately going on to invalidate actual bisexuals as a result of that - i think we kinda do the opposite? wishing we could just "pick a side" as it were, because i feel too gay for my straight friends and too straight for my gay friends. it's weird. i think it's important for bisexuals and gays/lesbians to talk about that sort of thing, because our experiences are more similar than we give them credit for, i think :0
i was also incredibly deeply excited that nick actually used the word bisexual. so many shows see it as dirty or strange and therefore don't ever use the actual word, so it made me very happy to see him use it, even if he wasn't 500% certain of it initially :D
(sorry for the rambly comment, i just love talking about being bi & your commentary is interesting)

“Too gay for straight friends and too straight for gay friends” is SUCH A MOOD. It can be so confusing, especially when there’s no representation really to explain that bisexuality is an actual sexuality, and not a phase or just something some people “do sometimes” Alice Oseman is my hero for creating Nick Nelson.

The part with the "lesbians are so disgusting" scene is so interesting to me. It's awful, obviously. But I think it's really interesting that it's the girls displaying the most blatant, unapologetic homophobia, while Harry and the boys hide it under excuses and jokes. I think most people think that girls, especially young girls, are inherently less homophobic than boys are, or more accepting, and it was interesting to see Heartstopper showing that no, girls as a group and as individuals can absolutely be homophobic as well.

    • @darktwistedlady
      @darktwistedlady Před 2 lety

Girls and women often have a lot of internalised mysogyny, which may make their homophobia towards lesbians twice bad, possibly because in our patriarchic culture lesbians break gender norms in more ways that gay men do, and in such cultures women have been forced to become moral guardians of straight femininity & sexuality in order to protect their in-group status as a potential partner for a straight man. It's really messed up.

They probably already knew them before or seen them around and had no problem changing or Ihad no problems with them, didn't see them any less of human being but just because they came out as lesbians they're seen a different light. The thinking that bi or pan people would cheat or not be satisfied is so weird to me. Being bi or pan is like linking people no matter their eye color or thinking all eye colors are attractive. You don't have to have a relationship with multiple people so you have all eye colors at the same time and you don't miss being with a blue- or green eyed person when you have a brown eyed partner. The “you’re so brave” comment reminds me of people who say to my brother (who has a disability) “oh you’re such an inspiration” simply for existing, when he’s just like trying to buy milk or something.
Or when people say to me (a single mum) “oh I don’t know how you do it” as if I have a choice in the matter and as if they can’t imagine my life being bright and fulfilling, it must be horrible and traumatic.
It’s the lack of a qualifier. She didn’t say “you’re brave for coming out with (what was effectively) a public announcement” she didn’t witness someone being homophobic and call Tara brave for how she dealt with it. She literally called her brave for being a lesbian, which is ridiculous, reads as if it’s a choice she made, and assumes her life must be so awful that simply existing as a lesbian is unimaginably horrible to her.

as a cis bi woman who is pushing 40, this show has given me so many mixed feelings. on the one hand, I am so excited that this new generation gets to have a show like this to teach them how to have healthy communication in their relationships, and how to navigate the coming out experience during those tough times of adolescence. on the other hand, I have a tad bit of jealousy that I did not have this when I was a teen. it makes me so emotional!
I didn't realize I was bi until I was in college and I wish I would have known then what I know now. the bisexual struggle of not being sure whether you're really attracted to someone or whether you just admire them as a friend and want to spend time with them never really goes away. it does get easier, but it honestly wasn't until my early-mid 20s that I was comfortable in my bisexuality and even then, I was still finding my way.

(to be clear: nothing wrong with this, but it's not a great first response or anyone's business unless i decide it is!) it's no surprise when hyper-sexuality or cheating often goes hand-in-hand with the majority of bi representation (particularly women) on screen.
largely being bi has meant that i feel like most people doubt my reality and my honesty. they seem to either think i'm lying to myself or them and that hurts. seeing more people like nick in tv and movies is great (and seeing the universal bi pirates of the caribbean panic is hilarious.) thanks for taking the time to talk about it!

When I was like 10 my dad was talking to me about relationships, and he said "when you eventually bring home your boy or girlfriend" which I feel like made my life so much easier than it would have been if he didn't say those words to me... And I'm so glad I got to hear that back then, but at the time, I was just a kid so I remember my brain going "why would I ever have a girlfriend? O_O" because I didn't know what homosexuality was, I had never even heard about gays xD
That being said, I was still scared to come out to dad once I realized that I am indeed a teensy bit gay, so I just blurted it out to him when I was drunk. He was in a different room and I just shouted that I like women from the couch xD He just laughed and said "I know" :')

In regards to boxing people in with language, I can relate to that on a heavy scale. My family used to do that with me before I came out as bi, always saying things along the lines of “ohh, are you into that boy?” Regarding most of my male friends. However, I’ll never forget the one time after I came out, I was on the phone with my grandma, and my mom asked who I was calling. My grandma heard this and said, “tell her it’s your girlfriend”. I was so happy after that, knowing that I had her full support.

We need to take a moment to appreciate especially Tara and Darcy's response to Nick. Charlie also has great responses to Nick questioning his sexuality and considering that he is bisexual, but I'm loving these conversations.
"I don't even know what my sexuality is"
    -"that's okay...'
-"don't feel like you have to come out to anyone before you're ready"
    "I'm not really out yet"
    -"do you want to be?"
"you're the first people I've told, about Charlie"
-"does it feel good to have told someone?"
Ugh, 2 episodes left, and can't wait to see your reactions to both!

I enjoyed all the episodes. I do love how Nick is growing and the start of his coming out process. From telling Tara to just throwing it out there with Elle. There was that initial hesitancy and then looking for the opportunity to just drop it in. 'We thought it would be fun to go on a triple date. You and Tao, Tara and Darcy....'. Even Tao would have seen that coming from triple date, and he seems pretty oblivious to the fact that the guy that Charlie has a crush on has been hanging with the group non-stop for months and yes, holding hands.

episode 6 is definitley one of my favourites, but episode 5 is certainly my top episode. i just love the birthday party, and nicks scene with imogen, and tao and charlies scene. episode 6 is right up there though, with the milkshake dates, elle finding out, tao being the last to know, the taradarcy talk, the bisexuality "vlogs". episode 2 and 8 are also up there as my top favourites. come prepared for episode 7, it's an emotional rollercoaster. and to think, everything that's happened so far in the netflix series happened in just 2 and a half (out of 8) chapters in the comics.

14:55 I think you hit the nail on the head here. I do hear the feedback that sometimes LGBTQ representation isn’t “realistic” but I think there is room for both, the realistic and the idealistic. There can be a lot of complicated feelings and experiences that at any age can be difficult to put into words, I think having a show like this to watch especially with family/friends who may not have the same can better understand.

As somewhere who, even now at 28, still struggles to label their sexuality, I loved this series. Growing up through Catholic school, when I started to realise I liked boys, I first had internalised homophobia, then realised I like both boys and girls, and the more I heard from LGBTQ+ people, the more I thought I must just be kidding myself liking girls, and that I must really be gay. Even now, I’m closeted at work but out to friends - but out as ‘I don’t really know what I am…’ I hope this series can help younger people realise that, as long as you’re happy, love is love whatever the label. My first brush with biphobia came from a girlfriend, actually. We were probably three months in and she dropped on me that she had to really think about dating me because I was bi (I'm pan actually, but that wasn't really a big thing then). I'd had reservations of my own but it was because she was 11 years younger than me, so I'd have understood more I think if she'd had other reasons for her concern.
It hit me hard - that somehow my orientation would cause any kind of question about what kind of person I was from someone in my own community, no less - that someone I was on my way to loving thought for even a moment I might not be worth her time simply because I'd loved men in the past in the same way I was interested in her. I think there's this perception that the people in your own community will support you unreservedly - and that's not always the case, which just adds another layer to wade through.
I never really came out to family, because back then and where I'm from you just didn't - you just did your best to escape your small town so you could have hope to live more freely. But like you mentioned, it's more acceptable that I'm a woman who mostly prefers women than it would be for a man who loved other men - even occasionally. That would add so much confusion to coming out when there's so little rep in media for bi and pan men.
Even now, when my lovers are a man and his wife, that's okay because it's titillating to enough straight people to be "okay". Had it been a man and his husband, I suspect it would be a very different situation. I'm just glad that Heartstopper is doing such a good job with all kinds of representation and making it seem exactly like what it is - a commonplace part of life we all deal with in one way or another. We need more in the world for sure.
Oh, and I love your reviews! Especially since you don't always see a scene the same way. It's nice to see the differences our own perceptions can make.

I am a man who has always identified as gay, ever since I understood what the word meant. I lived in San Francisco for 15 years and I swear I could count the number of self-declared bisexual men I knew on one hand. Most of my gay friends did not believe that bisexuality really existed. Then I moved to Sacramento, a much more conservative city, In various conversations men I'd had sex with, I was asked if I was not attracted to women, even a little bit. I found it a very strange question, but after being asked it many times, at some point, it hit me, bisexuality realty does exist.

Hello from Maine, Great reviews fun, heart felt, good discussion and thanks for sharing. After I watched this series I realized it helped me look at some repressed emotions as a closeted gay athlete in HS who had the crushes on best friends a few times. I ended up tracking down my HS Ski Coach. I lettered in xcountry skiing four years and was Captain of the team my senior year. We had a great phone conversation where I came out to him and thanked him for all the consistent support as a coach. I thanked him for the opportunity to be Captain and told him that it was a start that helped me in leadership roles in my life. He said, 'Geoff wait right there, that was not a role that I assigned to you but one that your team mates chose for you.'. Needless to say, I did not know that and was blown away. We had a great talk and he is still my coach in so many ways. Best to you boys across the pond! Keep up the great reviews! You are affirming much!

Even if Tao did see Charlie and Nick holding hands - he wouldn't equate ot to a romantic relationship. He and Elle hold hands, link arms and tell each other they love each other in a platonic way. I think the show shows being affectionate with your friends of whatever gender being a good thing and not inherently romantic (or "acting gay", which is often thrown at boys who show a softer side to each other).

    There's something to be said for societal pressure in discovering your bisexuality. Whilst representation is needed across the board, and more so in other sexualities/gender identities that aren't lesbian, gay, bi or trans, I think that there is a lack of bisexuality. Brooklyn 99 was definitely the first place that I saw open bisexuality, but the whole run of that show is very forward (2 Latina detectives, the police captain is black and gay, and the only young straight white males make up 2/9 of the entire main cast) and perhaps that view on there, whilst showing how tough coming out can be, is a bit more warped into being optimistic? {that being said I know they used a lot of Stephanie Beatriz's real thoughts as a bisexual actress in the storyline}
You're often told to "fall on a side" and I love that even though he is in a same-sex relationship there's no shoehorning him into being gay, or that you're either "gay pretending to be straight to pass in society, or straight trying to be different by pretending to be gay" and that's something I'm pleased isn't thrown in either. Nick isn't pretending to be gay to have a better friendship with Charlie or to be different from the rugby lads or something else utterly ridiculous, he's simply bisexual and confused but proud.
As someone, who like Nick has only ever really been attracted to the opposite sex, I've had those moments where I've not understood whether I was genuinely into someone or just wanted to be better friends with them and my brain is miss interpreting the signal - so therefore that presentation of Nick as confused really speaks volumes.
Point in a very long comment is that as someone still coming to terms with bisexuality, Nick's journey is really special because he's not thrown into ridiculous stereotypes, he's just bi and the confusion shown is perfect.

What got me with this one is you are the first reactors I’ve seen (tbf that’s out of 6) to point out that Tao is behind Nick and Charlie when they run down the hall holding hands and that nothing comes of it. Must have been because Tao was too overwhelmed by running 😂 but I still love that I’m not the only one to get caught on that lmao

9:46 I agree and I did the same thing, I told my family I was Bi so it would be easier to accept me. And then I came out as Gay later on, when I was comfortable with myself and my sexuality.
