Kinsmans & Bald Peak with -20°F Windchill - White Mountains, New Hampshire | Winter 48 4000 Footers

The top of the Kinsmans on 1/5/24 might as well have been Antarctica, I bet the windchill was warmer! I knew this day was going to be a cold day but goddamn was the windchill nippy. Looked at ‪@MWOBS‬ that morning, along with weather.gov, and Mountain Forecast, and decided to go for it. Happy to say my gear held up but I wouldn’t have wanted to be above treeline for long today. The wind wasn’t as strong as I anticipated but it felt like someone left the freezer door open. Unfortunately the clear skies forecasted never happened. Fog and snow moved in right as I hit the Mount Kinsman/Kinsman Ridge Trail junction. The ice was also atrocious in spots with a dusting of snow on it. I did grab some views here and there up high but mostly just on Bald Peak where I was met with a stunning 270° panorama taking in North Kinsman, Moosilauke, the Cannon Balls, and much more!
#25 and #26 of the Winter 48 4000 Footers done, and a memorable one at that…it was fun reflecting on my journey as a hiker with North Kinsman and South Kinsman having been my (“our” technically with wife and best hiking buddy Ash) first and last peaks of my initial round of the 48. Back then I would’ve told you people who winter hike the 48 are crazy...welp here I am!

Haha yes crisp to say the least! Was a little bummed out that the snow/fog moved in on the Kinsmans but it was still a really fun day :) the views from Bald Peak earlier in the day made up for it. So I crossed 2 others on the Kinsman Ridge Trail, everyone was moving quickly so had some quick chats and moved on. They both were traversing over the Kinsmans and Cannon with carspots, then I crossed a couple with their dog back at the trailhead that had just gone up to Bald Peak. Would say I was alone for about 99% of the day for sure!
