Took me a while to notice, but Beth was also ticked that there was no smoking in the school.... when she played the tournament at the same school not so many years ago, there were cigarettes everywhere 😂
Its not really a god complex (she doesnt believe she is actually a god amongst people), it would be closer to a superiority complex however even then its not really a superiority complex if she is actually better than other people.
i love how human everyone on the show was. every character so beautifully developed with flaws and abilities just interacting and growing, it made the show have so much depth. kudos to the writers and actors that made it shine. 👏👏👏
I disagree with the notion that her addictions are ‘badass’ especially when she collapsed with all her liquor bottles in the front lawn. It’s badass that she overcame those struggles and proved herself to be the best version of herself in the end.
I agree! I didn't like the way she treated her friends, either. But the best part was how she overcame her addictions. I still love this show and I'll always love Beth/Anya Taylor-Joy
Her confrontation and verbal slam of her adoptive father is definitely one of the strongest scenes. We only see a small part of it here, but she really laid waste to that sad excuse for a man.
Beth is an inspiration. She is a unapologetically herself and and she unapologetically fights for what she is passionate about. She does this while constantly being belittled by peoples idea of her, I think she’s a great role model despite her addiction.
@Allahu Akhbar No I'm talking about the real woman. Not the character. She had two world championships at this point in history and she never faced a male player. That story is dynamic and interesting to me. Beth Harmon is unremarkable beyond the fact that she's a woman which is a little insulting tbh.
Now this is something I never expected to see...one of my favorite books about chess, being made into a movie. And just saying, I read this book when I was in high school -- and other than Beth, my favorite character was Jolene, because she was everything Beth thought she wasn't. The best part? How she went to Moscow, and played chess against the workmen in the park, who were in cheap, dirty working clothes -- yet they never treated her as anything other than a chess champion, and never made anything out of the fact that Beth was a woman. To them, the only thing that mattered was that she played chess. If only society today could learn the lesson of the book...
I wish Walter Tevis (1928-1984) had lived to see this intelligent and beautifully filmed adaptation of his novel. His novel The Hustler was filmed in 1961 with Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie and George C Scott. Newman reprised his role as the pool player in The Colour of Money in 1986 directed by Scorcese.
Loved this show, one of the only ones that can keep my attention. I am in love with Townes, him and Beth’s relationship was honestly perfect. i was super glad they didn’t force them together, the parts they play in each other’s lives are perfect already
The greatest thing about this show is that she doesn’t dominate endlessly. She loses to more experienced players and she (mostly) takes those losses gracefully. Even Magnus Carlsen loses occasionally
Some of these were definitely her being toxic to herself at low points & closed off from others. But most of the selections are great for sure! My favorite moment of hers is when she reveals having learned Russian & hints at having understood the Russians in the elevator in Mexico lol. Borgov's respect for her is probably my favorite subtle change from the book to the show.
My understanding was that Alma was well aware of the lie the moment she sees Beth. I felt like Alma was just humoring the lady at the orphanage, but played along and we know the husband didn't care eitherway. I thought she started jr. High school, but regardless of her age she's smarter than the average kid. Alma catches on and after becoming her manager, they don't care about Beth's schooling since it's clear she doesn't need it.
I believe that in the book, Beth skips two full grades. When she gets to the point that she finishes early, she actually spends her time playing the janitor. At first, the school didn't like it, but after she won her first tourney, they didn't say much of anything, given that there was so much publicity. Though I do wonder if the show ever reveals that, at some point, she goes back to her high school, after finding out Mr. Shabel, the janitor, passed away. One of the more touching moments in the book was when she found a scrapbook he had started, in which he had followed her and collected every article he could about her chess career. The one question I have is, where the hell is Jolene? For a network to follow the book so well, and this video to not show a black actress because Jolene was a black character, and central to Beth's life, is a bit disappointing from a network that claims to be inclusive, yet isn't. I mean, when the book has this character who helps Beth train before going to Russia for 5 months, and this character isn't included on the show, something doesnt sit right. And just for correction's sake, Jolene also had a VW Beetle in the book, as she was the one to take Beth back to the high school when Mr. Shabel, the janitor, passes away.
what a great series. I would love to see more, but it was so perfect that it would just not be the same. it never is. so we must leave perfection alone.
I may be crazy but I really believe Anya Taylor Joy is the next Bette Davis or even Meryl Streep. In 25-30 years from now she could be in the Greatest actress of all time discussion along with Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, Meryl Streep, Francis Mcdormand, Ingrid Bergman, Vivian Leigh, Barbara Stanwick etc. I predict she will win an Oscar by the time she's 30
The Queens Gambit was a masterpiece of a show. The message behind it is so strong and the ending is beautiful! I loved it so much and enjoyed every single bit of that show!
I like the final scene. Symbolism of Beth's clothes aside i feel that in this moment she can finaly play chess without need to be the best or to prove anything... Just for pure "fun"...
Honestly some of those are just normal behavior (i wouldn't trait stealing as something badass worthy), but when Beth sits to the cheesboard, girlboss magic happens
Anya Taylor-Joy is a wonderful actor. Her role just flows with the story-line. Thomas Brodie-Sangster has played his part well. Both are worthy of praise. They know their craft well.

I didn’t catch her casual, “Right on!!!!” after the “Play starts in a few minutes!”
Lmaooooooo, yeeeeessss Harmon. 😂😂😂
When was that
@@pandora_8457 It’s episode 6, where Beth met Anett Packer again. It was after her big bender when she lost to Borgov in Paris.
Took me a while to notice, but Beth was also ticked that there was no smoking in the school.... when she played the tournament at the same school not so many years ago, there were cigarettes everywhere 😂
Beth: “Beth Harmon”
Opponent: “…shhit”
LOLOL
I like the way they made her look older as the story progressed even though the actress was the same age the whole time
yeah i didn't notice so much watching it but seeing all condensed here it's amazing they could do that.
Man, I loved this show, and I honestly want to see more of it, this show how great an individual can evolve
Right? Like, it doesn't need more, it had a great ending, but I don't want to say goodbye to Beth yet.
Evolve into what and what for? 🤨
Beth has a god complex and I love it.
y’all seen this word once and ran with it LMAOOOO
Its not really a god complex (she doesnt believe she is actually a god amongst people), it would be closer to a superiority complex however even then its not really a superiority complex if she is actually better than other people.
That's not how a god complex looks like- 💀
Yeah Beth is 100 times worse than Light Yagami 😳
@@hindenburg1596 Light Yamagi had some justification tbh, if he was a little smarter he could’ve done so much more.
Anya was so captivating in this role.
i love how human everyone on the show was. every character so beautifully developed with flaws and abilities just interacting and growing, it made the show have so much depth. kudos to the writers and actors that made it shine. 👏👏👏
This is an actress with an incredible future. Perfect casting.
I wish The New Mutants was halfway decent.
Her eyes are magical.
I love the part where she introduces herself to her competitor and he replies ‘shhhit’ because he knew he was done for 🤣
“Beth Harmon.”
“Shit!”
It's great how she's a strong woman without being a STroUnG WoMEn, you know what I mean
I wish there was a show or movie about the world champion woman that never faced a man because she was so good.
@Allahu Akhbar Wym?
@Allahu Akhbar No I'm talking about the real woman. Not the character. She had two world championships at this point in history and she never faced a male player. That story is dynamic and interesting to me. Beth Harmon is unremarkable beyond the fact that she's a woman which is a little insulting tbh.
@Allahu Akhbar I disagree. You can be a strong woman without competing with men.
@@heyhey439 who would that be? Because if she was so good, she should have faced men. To be the best you have to beat the best
Fabulous series 👍👍👍
Yup :3
That’s the perfect word to describe this. 👌
Her attitude and wardrobe is 🔥
I really enjoy that this show was just a mini series, no unneeded episodes, just air tight storytelling.
One of my favorite series binge watches.
Absolutely one of the finest shows ever made for TV - Writing and Acting was SUPERB!
Oh how much I wish I had her looks, brains and talent
I’ve watched this series about 3 times. One of the best badass women shows that’s come out in recent years.
This tv show got me so hooked that I watched it from start to end everyday for a week. Got to love her glamour.
I want to see a remake of the Hustler, with a modern cast.
Isaiah Welch they did it's called the color of money Paul Newman and Tom cruise.
This show was magical. The acting, the story, the characters, the music! The music was incredible. I wish I could watch this for the first time again.
Loved this show, one of the only ones that can keep my attention. I am in love with Townes, him and Beth’s relationship was honestly perfect. i was super glad they didn’t force them together, the parts they play in each other’s lives are perfect already
I don't have Netflix but from these clips, the acting is excellent as is the cinematography.
Seriously, it is worth getting Netflix for 1 month and watch only this.
From this.....that is not acting.....
@@chrisofnottingham there's piracy ...u know, can't believe ppl actually pay for these things.. lol
When an actress says a lot without speaking, It's the signature of a great actress.
shes a total badass
It began and ended so beautifully. A masterpiece
She was amazing in this series.
This what a strong female character looks like! Hollywood take note. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🤘🏻
The end where she walked into the area where those old guys were playing chess was class.
This has got to be one of my all time favorites for a series! I'll take intelligence over a dumb ass chase scene any day!
"he won't need to suffer for much longer" had me dead
One of my favorite shows of all time. A beautiful, brilliant woman living life and succeeding.
They have such good acting in this show 😍. They're all so talented.
man o man, what an actress, she embodied her role perfectly, what an amazing character wondefully played, I wish I would meet a woman like that IRL
tbh its one of the greatest show ive ever scene
Anya Taylor Joy owns this role. Best performance I have seen in years from anyone.
I enjoyed Queens Gambit ... got my parents to watch 1 ep and ended up finishing the whole season.
“Excuse you Harmon-“
“Fuck you Margaret…”
😂🤣😂🤣
Loved this series. And loved many of its little moments, especially the final scene. There is a beauty in finding joy (and redemption) in excellence
This will forever go down as her greatest role! One of the best movies ever!
ok so like, if her adoptive parents believed she was 13, she would be sent to school at around 8th - 9th grade?
Probably they said to them she skipped classes. Writers forgot about this detail I think...
The show progresses fast, she's out of school already and an adult soon after the adoption happens
@@isaiahwelch8066 I would recommend actually watching the show rather than a CZcams video titled "beth harmon being a badass" for the answers you seek
what a great series.
I would love to see more, but it was so perfect that it would just not be the same.
it never is.
so we must leave perfection alone.
Yes agreed. I was so sorry to get to the last episode, but another season would kill it. Perfection
I predict she will win an Oscar by the time she's 30
she is such a comfort character
I will never get over how she got up and took a stroll while her opponent was considering his moves lmaooo 2:33
Tbh players do that a lot, sitting in your seat for maybe 4hrs or more in classical games is not very nice.
😄 She’s like ‘Whilst you think I’m going to take a walk, do the dishes, write a book, and reach retirement age’.
This compilation could have been seven hours long.
damnnn i need her confidence and skills so bad 😭
Ohh..the Adams'apple one was too savage. At the same time it's very apt.
She reminds me of a girl I used to have a crush on.
You sound insecure
@@emilyadams1674 why lmao
One of the best ever.
Honestly some of those are just normal behavior (i wouldn't trait stealing as something badass worthy), but when Beth sits to the cheesboard, girlboss magic happens
"Fuck you, Margret". Loved it.
Anya Taylor-Joy is a wonderful actor. Her role just flows with the story-line. Thomas Brodie-Sangster has played his part well. Both are worthy of praise. They know their craft well.
This video made me finally go and watch this show and I just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration!
Last week I have watched it again.Wonderful!!
love her
this made me so nostalgic what the heck
"im gonna walk"
"to the airport?"
"YOU'RE GONNA MI-"
my favorite line lol
The end is the best.
Anya is an acting genius
0:40 is the most badass thing I've ever seen.
There is so much about this show that is fantastic. I still think about the "genius and madness" quote everyday.
ATJ is one of the national treasures in acting right now. She’s amazing !
"Fuck you, Margaret" wins xD
Excellent series and acting!
Please please do more of these. I absolutely love vids like this from ya.
That was one of those movies I watched that I didn’t expect to like… but absolutely LOVED!
