Giant Propel Advanced SL Disc - 2019 Model First Look

- On Friday I saw a post from the Giant Bikes Store of Nagoya Japan (my local bike shop) where they announced that they just got a brand new 2019 propel advanced SL 0 disc and put it on display that day!
Needless to say, I rushed over to the Giant store after work to get a first look at this new aero road bike. My wife Thuong also came along and we both give our impressions from looking at the bike. It was her first time seeing a bike this expensive ($11,500 USD!) and she said it looks like it "cuts through the wind!"
They also had a 2019 Giant Propel Advanced SL 1 disc with a beautiful "rainbow black" paint finish, that looks absolute stunning when catching the light well.

Those are really stunning bikes. My buddy Jason has the previous model Giant Propel with Ultegra and disc brakes, analogous to the first bike you showed - it's a serious piece of kit. Thanks for showing us Giant's new bikes! Bellisimo.

That's a really big store! The "Giant" story in my town is just a small one, so they don't have all models. I'm really impressed!

Great video! I am new to Giant but was trying to decide between the TCR Advanced SL1 Disc and the Propel Advanced SL1. I was wondering...where's the Di2 junction box/controls on Giants? My 2018 SuperSix Evo has it underneath the handlebar but I couldn't find it on the video you took on either model (nor on any other pics I see of them online). Thanks!
How dangerous is that! To live close to that shop! Beautiful bikes of course...I will try to have at least 3 bikes if I win a lotto;) great videos, and just love everything to do with Japan :-) you guys make such the couple I think it is great.

I got a 2019 TCR SLR2. Probably the best value in the TCR lineup. Got it on a end of year sale at Sports Depot. :)

If you ever go Thailand check out the 3D printed bikes, you can get any bike at a fraction of the price.

It's interesting that the Propel comes with the thru axles changed already. My 2019 TCR Pro 0 comes with the stand thru axles that look like xlarge bulky quick releases. I am trying to source a thru axle that you have to use a tool to remove. Less convenient for sure but looks way better, IMOP.
Most top end disc models should be using thru axel now, definitely looks a lot cleaner and safer

That black propel looks absolutely stunning but the stem setup is hideous. I'm a bit of aTCR fan myself and will probably get a TCR or a supersix evo next year :)
Agreed, I prefer a more traditional style road bike over the aero bikes.. But that black paint job is stunningly beautiful..
Are Aero Bikes the same as Tri bikes? Because both designs look so compact, so you can go fast straight.
But I heard having a tri bike as a regular road bike is bad, because the turning radius is not as quick.
Not quite. Tri bikes are built for one thing, and can't really sprint on them..
Shame they don't offer bike rental at this location. Considering it's close to Morikoro and some mountains, it would be really nice to put my excuses to the test and see if a top of the line bike would make me any faster!

I've heard just about every theory to justify the high cost of bikes these days. Manufacturers are building bikes that retail for $10k to $15k. That's insane, considering what kind of motorcycle you can get for that price. Unless you are a pro rider, which don't pay for their bikes, who is buying a decent enough number of these high level bikes for them to become a production model. Especially considering the level of bike that under $5k will get you. I think this could turn away alot of new comers to the sport. I bought my first new steel Bianchi road bike from a So. California bike shop in 1985 while in the 7th grade and only paid around $500. Maybe I'm just getting old. Starting to sound like my old man, "Back in my days, we used to ......"
I agree that these bikes are way too expensive for the average consumer, but there apparently is a market for them and some people are willing to pay top dollar for the best of the best. At this price though, I'd also rather have a nice motorcycle personally haha

Consider looking for a model that is one year old. Now it's 2020 the local Giant dealers have priced that 2019 SL 0 with a 35% discount. The Giant power meter is prone to problems from what i've researched.

The aero bikes are a lot more lightweight compared to the TCR considering they have disc brakes

I just sold my Giant Quick E , had no problems with it except it wasn't suitable for dirt and gravel roads , or bush rides !

I know Giant produces some of the best riding stiffest framesets at any price and offer it at much lower prices than bling brands. But I've never lusted after Giant. They never had the "it" factor like Colnago, Pinarello, Look, Trek etc. However with the release of these newer Propel disc models and the new Defy models, I find myself wanting these as much as those other brands.
True, they were always kind of plain design wise, but definitely good value

Giant bike suck...You cant lower the stem without removing the top cover or cutting the steerer tube (and the rubber piece?)
Stupidly expensive. Nice bikes but you can buy a very, very high spec superbike for that much.
