Created by Jamie Miles, a third year Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) student at the University of Oxford.
I don't think I've ever been so inspired before! Not just that kind of "ooh i should do that" inspired, but properly, "I want to change the way I approach life" inspired. I absolutely love your channel and i think it's unbelievably useful for people like me (I'm thinking about applying for PPE at Oxford). I love how you seem to want to explore the world and make it a better place all at the same time (thanks to those juggling skills) and I really hope you get everything you want out of life, and keep making videos!!
+Simon Upton That's incredibly moving to read. Thank you Simon, how have things been?
U remind me of ed miliband
Enkuush M Oh jeezzz, in a good way or a bad way?
Jamie, I have fallen in platonic love! Your view on life and the world is genuinely awe-inspiring. Dude, you're just awesome. The stuff you've done goes to show the power of determination - barriers and obstacles really do mean nothing when you put your mind to it. Doesn't matter if you wanna go on to actually change the world or just bake a cake - perseverance leads us to be able to do anything. I know that no matter what business venture you go on to do, I'm sure it will be a great success, and the fact that you want to use this channel to actually help us as viewers shows a connection and appreciation that we appreciate. All in all, I hope I end up half as brilliant as you! OK... I need to stop writing essays as CZcams comments. haha :)
Thanks for the great comment (and the platonic love!), and don't worry, I love reading essays :)
THIS IS AMAZING! Thank you so much, Jamieeeee! The wait was definitely worth it! I enjoyed every second and loved getting to know more about you! :D x
Ahh this made me really emotional! Miss you and hope you have an excellent summer!
There are only a few people who make you wish that you knew them personally in real life...and I must say that Jamie, you're definitely one of those!! Cheers to your perspective on the world around you!! It's a rare thing nowadays, to stay positive about stuff!!
Keep up the awesome work at inspiring all of us!!
Love and regards,
Shivani :)
You have really given me a new way to look at things. I wouldn't say that I am pessimistic but your optimism has certainly made me feel more positive about my future. I have only just finished my first year of sixth form and I'm still waiting for my results (very nervous). However because of this video I've realised that I shouldn't be nervous and that I can do better and that I definitely need to start taking on every opportunity that comes my way! Thank you! :)
Your life seems so inspiring. I like the way you have all these ambitions and then actually make them come true.
Hey Jamoe, i would like to say: Thank-YOU for making all these wonderful videos and for sharing your journey at Oxford with us. 'Draw my Life' is really well and it really gave us, the audience a clear look at your life, your struggles, the growth of your character and Oxford itself along with your experience throughout. As for your future plans, Best of Luck!! I hope to go to Oxford University - Im entering my senior year in High school (secondary school) and this is the deciding year whether i make it or not so wish me luck!!!!
Son M Best of luck (^_^)
This is so freaking motivating! Thank you :D and im about to sit for my A levels exam in May June, sounds likethe pressure built in degree further a notch higher!
Outstanding! I envy your energy and enthusiasm of life.
P.S - Please don't stop making them! Interested to hear more on a video about your travels perhaps?
This is such a fantastic video! :-)
Hey I am starting PPE in ChCh next month, and I just want to say thanks for your videos. I haven't watched all of them yet but I did find the ones about the application process very very useful back when I was applying for Oxford. Your plans for the future are in some ways similar to my own (the educator and the useful company thing), so I hope you will still upload videos about those things once they take place. Good Luck~
I really really enjoy your videos even thought I am nothing to do with Oxford and have been working a few years now. This video is especially fantastic and kudos to you for having such a zest for life. I am looking forward to see what you do in the future.
I am really happy I came across your channel today. I love your videos and I thought I had to watch this video especially to know what your life was and is like:) it was reallyy inspiring! I wish you all the best with everything :)
Awesome video! I really liked what you said about making time for things - I found it really inspirational because it often seems that there isn't enough time for the plethora of things I want to do, but you made me look at it all slightly differently ;)
Awesome , honestly I got scared when Sunday passed and saw no video. Your channel is part of my life now
Thanks for this. Inspired.
Thank you for such a nice video, and I was able to especially relate to the fact that people sometimes get too caught up on concentrating on one field of their lives, such as academics, and completely neglect all the other opportunities that are knocking on their door. Sometimes I question whether my decision to join more clubs is wise when I'm about to begin my IGCSE course because I'm afraid I won't be able to balance everything out, but this just restored my confidence that it's all worth it.
Thank you for such a great video again! It really helped out!!
Love the video! ....also, I saw you on one of the Tedx talks :D ...you and the human calculator
Thanks for the vid and also the book sounds cool
Thank you so much, Jamie - that was amazing :) I'm definitely going to have to watch it again. That was a truly jam-packed 23 minutes and 44 seconds!
Regarding an idea for a video, I would be hugely interested to learn about the process you go through to create each vlog, so a kind of 'what goes on behind the scenes' video would be wonderful if you ever fancy making something along those lines. Also no problem if not though!
lol your hilarious, love love love your videos- i want to study english language and literature at oxford
Love this video and I loveee Japannn really want to go! >.< love all your videos btw ^-^
This is definitely the best draw my life video ever! So inspirational!
sanya kasurova Thank you, that means a lot :D
Wow... is all I have to say. I am going into year 11 soon and stumbled across your chanel when searching for some good revision tips (yours were very helpful!) You are such an inspiration to me and I aspire to follow your footsteps! I just want to thank you for making such motivational videos! Hopefully with a lot of hard work my GCSE results will be as rewarding as yours!
Oh and one last thing... do you remember how early on you started revising for your GCSE's? I am sitting exams for 13 subjects and therefore to reduce the stress I have started now... do you think I have started a bit early?? Thanks in advance!
Woah! I got really excited when I saw a TWENTY THREE minute video. Insane! But really it was awesome to know about your life through the medium of drawing (you're really good!) Also, I think a video dedicated to your internship with a Geisha would be awesome. Or maybe one comparing all your different work/business experiences?
Thank you much for making such great content! They're truly the highlights of my Monday mornings :P
Amazing. It's interesting, as I feel I got an insight into your mind and it's logical thought rather than the prose of your life.
Avidly waits for next video :D
This was really lovely! It's really admirable how you have managed to accomplish so much!!! I am going off to uni this september to study pharmacy (at the university of east anglia hopefully) and I'm definitely going to listen to your advice and make the most of my university experience. Thank you for making this video, it was honestly so much fun to watch!
Glad you enjoyed it! Best of luck with results, you're going to love it.
So I sum up everything in one sentence: I Love Watching Your Videos!!!!! (more than anything else in the world)
This video has been overwhelming and inspiring for me to watch. After so many days I have seen someone be an inspiration to me and I am in awe of your accomplishments! In fact, I'd suggest you do give a TED Talk channelising your amazing thoughts about the world. I intend to keep track of your videos as best I can! Thank you for the valuable information you give us, it has been very helpful!
Thank you Maira. Your comment was extremely humbling and warming to read :)
wowee you are a fantastic human being Jamie
OMG! MY GREAT GRANDAD"S FAMILY MOVED FROM GUJARAT TO KENYA (NAIROBI) AND THEN MOVED TO LONDON IN THE 70'S!!! So similar!!! can totally relate!
I really enjoyed this, and I am incredibly impressed at the amount of responsibilities that you managed to juggle at Oxford. My first year at Cambridge was a bit of a disaster - and I was just trying to balance friends and Engineering! The second has been much easier, more exciting, and much more enjoyable, so perhaps the third will include some more extracurriculars!
As someone who has just left, make the most of your final year :)
Surprising commonly outstanding life! I feel that you are on the edge of creating something after achieving being someone, which isn't given to everybody. Despite your background ( public school, no one in Oxford before...) you made it. You got into the 3rd best uni of the world, you crafted this channel out of the blue, you got an internship in GOOGLE, and you accomplished all this and more staying true to yourself.
I look up to your special project eagerly. What about combining your two life goals, teaching and creating a meaningful business?
By the way, I see what you did there 22:07 ;)
Looking forward to your new video :)
Off Topic PS: In my suggestion list I have "Morgan Freeman Chats with Jimmy While Sucking Helium" + "Kid asked dwayne Wade why he flops" + "Baby elephant VS a cat"
Thank Matt :) And those suggestions, when combined, make me - obviously.
P.S. Glad you enjoyed the easter egg
I never thought I could relate to a CZcamsr/Oxford grad before, but wow. And what a fantastic vid, Jamie!!
Thanks Dan! Really happy to hear you enjoyed it :)
You're welcome! Even if you don't see this cheeky lil' WW2 potato in your comments, you should know that I still enjoyed it :D
+Dan Margetts You're not a potato anymore!?
Oh gosh! I am now a po-tassium ion channel, I guess the teletubby character remains resonant...
I hope all is well :)
Awesome video ^.^
Really liked this video.
You got to visit CERN! I am so jealous. I also feel like I should mention that I also asked why so much that my parents literally bought me a book and whenever I asked a question they would tell me to check if the answer was in the book first. One of my earliest memories is reading about why the moon follows the car and boring my family with all the information I learnt.
+politicallyobsessedscholar sounds like our parents has similar experiences :D
Really enjoyed the vid :) now I know that when I go to Oxford i wont die from having too much work
:D It's definitely manageable and you can do tons of things on top of it
you are truly an amazing human :O
That is me as well because I read everything I could get my hands on. To this day I can weave through crowds while engrossed in a book.
13:37 - The resistance is strong with this one.
It was really nice to watch. I wish I would be more like you (in terms of being always 100%) as you seem to really know how to balance your life. I've just ended highschool so I am in a kind of confusing place now and I need to make a lot of important decisions and making every one of those requires consideration for way too much things. Anyway, it is nice to see someone who know made it, know what he wants etc And I really admire that you want to do something for others, not only for money. I am sorry for such a long comment :)
Don't be sorry for a long comment, I said I like reading comments in the vid :D
Glad you enjoyed it and best of luck with making the decisions. When making a tough decision I usually sleep on it or just feel what I believe is the right thing to do. Usually these things are permanent as well, so you can also try another path if things don't work out.
Ok, I won't be sorry never again (preper for really long comments) :P
Great video! You should make a video about your experience in Japan!
leah38521 Funnily enough, I have ALL the footage on my hard drive, I just haven't edited it :D
JamoeMills genuinely looking forward to watching it! :D
One of the best "draw my life videos" I´ve seen so far:) I´ll start my IB (International baccalaureate) at a United World College this Month... And I´m really scared about the whole time management thing... But your videos about learning were really helpful so thank you:D
Greetings from Germany
MultiBlackzebra You'll nail it, I'm sure. Best wishes from London :)
I hope so :D
If anyone wants to know if I´ll actually nail it you can check out my blog.
uwcadventure.wordpress.com
You're friend is a very good artist and that sushi looks great!
JamoeMills I absolutely agree:) I really like her pictures and it´s a big advantage to have an artist in your friend group. We made sushi for the first time and I was really glad it turned out so well. ( I´m always surprised when a "youtuber" answers to my comments) :D
5:09 well phrased
Same
oh gosh, I remember runescape. all I did was chop trees and make fires so I was level 40something in those categories.
Love the video. Let make the company a fashion company.
How did you get full straight A's to go to Oxford? Did you buy a lot of textbooks? How did you spend your lunchtimes? How many hours did you study per week? I am currently short of time and need answers quick if I were to be given the chance. Thanks in advance
I am torn between the sciences and arts like you were too - I do biology, chemistry, history and Spanish for A level and can't decide!
+Mia Pham be an artistic scientist or a scientific artist.
By the way, it's an awesome project!
I'm french and I would loke to enter Cambridge (course HSPS) could you make a video for International students please knowing that 35 % of the students in Cambridge and Oxford are International students, this would be absolutely amazing!
Wow! You are such a beautiful soul! Your future girlfriend / wife will be very lucky to have someone as amazing like you ! :)
Muhammad Nabil Is he!?
If you want to teach in the long term and your goal is to make a business that adds to the world why not combine these to create something you love! Since I found your channel a few weeks ago you have helped me out a lot and I think you'd be a great teacher, whether thats in a classroom or as your business
Daniella Ricchiuti Thanks :D Perhaps An Odd Education can evolve into that? It would be quite ideal to mix them together.
Jamie what alevel results did you get?
Very inspirational for someone in the process of preparing for the MAT and writing a personal statement. ^^
Assume you saw from the edit, but I didn't forget the fox marks :D Best of luck with the preparations!
JamoeMills Thanks! Yeah I noticed the fox marks but they came after the "believe it" so I thought you'd leave them out haha ^^
詩乃朝田 Also! My friend recommend I watch 'Baccano!'. Have you seen it? Would you recommend it?
Come to Singapore! I'd love to have a cup of tea with you!
I would love a cup of tea! OK, deal. I'll announce if I am going to Singapore and we'll have some tea :)
Great! Can't wait :D
What's your ideal brew?
Seneca Gamer Whatever you recommend. I'm a fan of green teas, but I like discovering new flavours :)
As I am preparing for Oxford, this video motivated me to open my books and study and as well as I realised that time can be managed between academics and extra curricular. Thank you so much Jamie!😊
Between I am so worried if I'll get into Oxford or not😥
I am also applying for other universities like-KCL, UCL, Durham and Edinburgh. Are these universities a good choice ? Because I am an international student from India , I don't know much about the reputation and academic value of all the universities in uk other than Oxford. 🙂
Please help me
I'm also an international student from the US hoping 1 day I can get into Cambridge, it depends on what course you are trying to apply, you can see rankings on many websites by a simple google search, also, choose the college that feels right for you, visit the college in your year 11,12 or 13 just to feel where will be your home for at least 3 years
Nguyen Vinh Thank you so much! Best of luck for the next year 🙂
Hi Jamie! Do you have any reading recommendations for a year 12 student hoping to study PPE?
My dad's family immigrated to Uganda from Gujarat and was also forced out of Africa by Idi Amin. Like your mother, he ultimately settled in the UK, though we have moved since then. Would have never have guessed you were part-Gujju, though! After outlining your business ventures, however, I suppose there was never really any doubt. :P
mutatedlavalamp Haha, are people with a gujarati background meant to be entrepreneurial?
JamoeMills Not meant to, of course, but I have heard it as a stereotype. That's not to say stereotypes are meant to be taken seriously, though I don't see anything particularly wrong with this one hehe
Thanks for opening up my mind by sharing all these your thoughts to us!
BTW, I wonder how many courses you took every semester. :D
sally Each term (8 weeks) I studied 2 topics at university. At the end of the 8 weeks, you have usually written 8 essays for each topic.
Wow...It's really tough! But I can see you managed it pretty well! Hope I can be as successful as you are! :D
Your life is very fascinating, there are quite a few odd similarities but I suppose this can be explained with statistical probability. I've always wanted to create value on CZcams but just like you I didn't (still don't) know what I can talk about. Something that I regret a lot is that I was too afraid to juggle and go abroad :/
I do History, English Lit and Maths. could you please help me . how did u revise etc and what u got
The fact that you had 11A*s is making me really inspired to study for my exams now. I'm going into year 10 soon, I'm really hard working. Funny enough one of my names means hard working but not as hard working as you. :) Did you get 11A*s from working really hard or is it natural talent as well as hard work and revision?
quiettepeakactually predominately hard work. You just need to do a little everyday with high goals and it all falls into place. Great to hear that you are working hard, my advice is to go slow and steady :)
Thank you!! I wish you the best of luck, you will do really well in life!:)x
Dubai 😍
Hey, JamoeMills! i was just wondering what advice you would give to people like me who did not achieve very well academically last year but wants to put that straight in year 11 GCSE. ;) and what was you revision technique and timetable. BYEEE.
Be sure to work smart. Put in the hours, i.e. do a little bit every day and have a clear idea of what you need to do to get better. If you don't do the latter, you will be wasting a lot of energy.
Look at what the exams expect of you early on and be sure that you understanding the intuition behind the material, instead of purely memorising it. By understanding the intuition behind it, you will be more likely to remember it and implement that knowledge in more creative ways.
However, my biggest piece of advice is don't give up.
Hope that helps!
JamoeMills Thanks!
Hi, I think it's a fantastic draw my life. Though I was mainly wondering how you managed to juggle all your commitments and with 8hrs of sleep. I do so much less, and am still only getting 5 hrs and not managing at all. Any time management tips would be much appreciated. Thanks ever so much. :)
+geetigirl Do the things that make all the other things easier or redundant.
+JamoeMills I'm sorry but could you give an example? I'm not coming up with anything that fits that criteria.
Example 1: Two options: a) you start revising your entire chemistry curriculum for an upcoming exam, or b) you spend some time reading the exam criteria to see what you'll be marked on.
You should pick b) as you're likely to find it reduces the workload of a) as some things won't be required for the exam.
Example 2: a) you bake an amazing carrot cake for a party, and spend 10 hours on it or b) you run a survey in advance of the party, and discover everyone hates carrot cake
b) is more sensible, as it informs a) and reduces the risk of you wasting your time.
I'm so jealous of your amazing life!!
Olga Tennor that's kind of you to say! What's your story? :)
JamoeMills Well, I once wanted to go to Oxbridge, but judging from the way some of my exams went I don't think that's going to happen. Without wishing to indulge in defeatism/self-pity, the above video seems like an ideal that I'll never attain (what with the amazing travels, friendships and experiences you describe)... but somehow I'll find another way to obtain this richness of life that I dream of :)
Olga Tennor I wish you lots of luck and success in your endeavours. ^_^
thank you! :)
Olga Tennor As littlejune said, best of luck. It's always good to have a dream, give you something fun to aim for (and achieve!) :)
Hi JamoeMills! This whole life video is just brilliant!! I'm having problem with choosing a level subjects. I love philosophy but I hate memorising all the history things and English is not my mother tongue. I do love all the philosophy discussion but people say I got an one-track mind.. And I wanna study philosophy or maybe PPE in Oxford one day. What would you suggest I do about this?
Julia Zhang You need to make yourself love memorising things! It actually makes remembering things easier ;) I didn't do philosophy at A level. Instead, I did English literature and analysed the various philosophies the authors would share. Perhaps that would be a good compromise for you? Philosophy is simply thinking through problems, and coming up with clear arguments. If you did English literature, you can work on your ability to communicate, and you won't have lots of history things to memorise.
That sounds really challenging as my english isn't really good. But thanks so much for the advice!!
There's only one way to get better at a language. Practice. If you know something is a weakness, make it a strength :)
Thanks!!! That's sounds really helpful!!!!! Hope to see you in Oxford one day!!!
Heartbreaking to see your dismissal of the greatest thinker of the 19th century. Other than that lol cool.
You were 11 in year 9?! I'm pretty sure most people are 13/14! - Also is it worth mentioning that my cb lvl was 93 on my personal statement? Or write that alchemy inspired my love for chemistry and is why I'm applying for it? =P
Haha, you're the first one to spot that. I realised I said it wrong during the editing :P
And I don't see that issue with throwing in some Runescape ;)
hello Jamie,
have you ever wondered what kind of animal Pikachu is?
Nice video by the way!
Sammi Wang
also! you bet I'm going to apply for a graphic designer position when you've founded that company...
Well you certainly have the talent for it going from your OxTweet entry. Let me know when you get in!
runescape is such a great game to learn English as well :O got to level 68 then stopped playing:)))
***** Runescape is how I learned to touch type and my Estonian friend said the same thing about learning English :)
that apart from teaching you to satisfy your needs on a limited budget(it's also quite hard to make a lot of money at the very beginning, which makes it very realistic and challenging)
Agreed, the amount of life skills I got from that game is quite amazing.
how do you make friends at uni?
Jamie I love this video!! Do you have Insta??
+Amy Stilton no, I like to keep my social media lean.
How did you get this internship in Japan? I'd like to intern abroad
I got this one through Oxford, as they have an international internship programme, but if you Google you should be able to find some opportunities. Loads of companies all over the world are looking for interns.
If you are from the UK you are eligible for the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. I attempted to apply for it in October last year but I don't hold a British passport so had to go through the Bulgarian Embassy and consequently decided to abandon the endeavour. Another thing I tried was the Student Volunteers Abroad but that is specifically a Scottish charity. There should be a few things available to you depending on which institution you're based in. Hope that helps :)
it was
Really good video :) just saying you spelt the word 'piece' wrong at 12:23
+mahrus2900 :(
my imaginary popcorn doesn't run out
Jamie you could start a private school as a business and teach there. also
Hi Jamie its me Finn 😄
Hey cuz! Hope you're having a fun summer holiday :)
I'm guessing the grand exchange ruined your runescape courier :P
And you didn't specify what you were level 82 in
I knew he was part India
How did you get 11 A*'s??????
+hanna elazab it's just a game, and like all games, it is easier to win when you know the rules.
How old were you when you sturted your undergraduate studies??)
I was 18. Jezzz, how I've grown over the last 3 years :D
I will be 20 when I start my undergraduate studies, as I am coming from a country which is in the middle of nowhere and our school's grades are not recognized by European universities:D What do you think, wouldn't it be a little late? By the way, you are quite intriguing and your videos are always interesting! I can see that you are a good guy)
I wouldn't say that is late, one of my friends was 20 in first year and it didn't hinder his ability to enjoy the experience.
In fact, you might be at an advantage because you'll be wiser and not make as many silly mistakes.
And thanks for the complement, that's very kind of you to say :)
Or make it a food company .
+Fathima Manaal i can help you
HEY I'M GUJI
I am related to Idi Amin :)
11
Hmm... I'll assume this is binary. Thanks for sharing the magic number 3 ;) #WatchingLotsOfCodingLectures
Ooh, interesting! I love the idea of seeing problems as challenges :) Sounds like you've had an interesting life story so far! As for business ideas - I'm currently a little obsessed with a company called Acumen Fund (acumen.org/), started by a remarkable lady called Jacqueline Novogratz that tries to find business and entrepreneurial solutions to problems in developing countries. If you like the vlogbrothers (and if you would call yourself a nerdfighter, DFTBA :) ) I think you'd like the idea. I think there's been a rise of companies / start ups / non profits recently that try to combine effective business oriented solutions with service in mind recently, and there are a lot of interesting ideas out there! Let us know what happens in your future!
I'm checking out the site now and it looks like Acumen aligned with my believe in reshaping economic preferences to align then with promoting social good. Thanks for the recommendation and DFTBA :)
Yep! It's unfortunate that the stereotype of economics has been of a cold / immoral system. If you like Acumen, I'm not sure if you've heard of an idea called effective altruism - kind of started by ethicist Peter Singer from Princeton, has blossomed into lots of different organizations. You might have already stumbled across such ideas if you studied PPE, but I think EA is a super interesting examination of both conventional charitable structures and just an interesting normative ethical exercise as well.
By the way, for video suggestions - I'd love to hear more slightly intellectual discussions about maybe PPE related ideas, business, etc. if you feel comfortable with those! You seem like you'd have an interesting perspective on a lot of things! It also might be a more sustainable strategy for video creation in the future since it doesn't rely on any specific event in your life. Just a thought! Good luck with everything and DFTBA!
You are going to love my new website based on your suggestions. :P You can sign up for the launch at jamiemiles.ninja
Ha alright I'll check it out! :)
If I have been spelling my name wrong for 11 years is it not Miles I am Ryan your dad's brothers son
You mean my cousin? ;) How's Rebecca?
Teach lizards to fly. Closest to dragons
Drones. They are always the answer...
Don't you guys have to work during uni!?
Damo Voss yes :)
Are you dating someone, and have you dated someone in the past? :)
Hopefully you realise you already have made a mark on the world :)
***** I think everyone makes a mark on the world purely by existing, which is sort of by definition, so I'm not saying that much with this remark but it isn't always fully acknowledged! We touch people's lives in ways far greater than we are aware, even by the smallest action, like a well-timed smile. The only catch is, it's up to you whether your impact is positive or negative.
