What have cartoons ever done for us? | Jamie Miles | TEDxKazimierz
Jamie Miles' message to TEDxKazimierz is to ask whether lessons, wisdom and principles in our culture - from Plato to Pokémon - can inspire people to tackle the hardest and most important questions like, ‘How do I live a fulfilling life?’ or ‘What should I do for a career?’
Jamie Miles set up his first online business aged 12, which helped fund his studies at Oxford University. As the first student from his school to study at Oxford, he decided to start sharing videos on his CZcams channel on the process of applying and the art of learning, helping thousands of potential applicants to achieve their academic ambitions. His channel has over 1 million views and won the Oxford University award for innovation in access. Continuing his own studies, Jamie worked at Google before moving into the world of startups, as one of the early employees of Onfido, an identity verification company. Jamie’s message to TEDxKazimierz is to ask whether lessons, wisdom and principles in our cartoon culture - from Disney to Pokémon - can inspire people to tackle the hardest and most important questions like, ‘How do I live a fulfilling life?’ or ‘What should I do for a career?’.

FUCK YEAH! An actual goddamn walkthrough. You absolute chad. Edit: 15:17 the madlad does what I think he skipped over. The actual process! Oh he still skipped the highlight phase. hmm Well looks like the skimming is gonna be the most difficult phase. Well this was probably the most helpful vid on youtube but still not quite what I had in mind. I suppose my main problem is skimming/reading and identifying key concepts.

For what
Thank you for your interesting and well structured presentation.I got an unconditional offer (with the caveat that I simply pass my International Baccalaureate) from Sussex University back in the 80's and found the interview to be a breeze....the interviewer spoke of his field of interest which was artificial intelligence and although I didn't know hardly anything about it I paraphrased some of his views (thus flattering his ego) and gave a few deductive and inductive answers to his questions and he was well pleased. The reason I went for the interview is that I was scared not to get the grades that Durham and St Andrews had asked for. When I got my IB results they were so far above my expectations that I literally rolled in a field in disbelief and I ended up accepting St Andrew's offer. My take away is in line with your advice: demonstrate the ability to think on your feet and demonstrate analytical acumen. Whilst doing my masters in international law at a Swiss university one of my lecturers was an ex president and another the ex spoke-man of Yasser Arafat. The former taught a course on the Harvard Negotiating Project of which he was a participant having worked withe Bill Clinton. The latter taught a course on cogent public speaking and short oral presentations of the type one would give in a television allocution and I added more tools to my box. The fundamental elements of being persuasive remain: being able to rapidly analyze and find solutions to problems (thinking on your feet), project a confident demeanor and have an excellent command of the language you are speaking (I studied the great rhetorical masters of the past...Pericles, Cicero, Grotius, John Stuart Mill etc..) display a perfect command of facts relating to any area you are supposed to be an expert in, demonstrate flexibility and creativity often thinking outside the box, clearly identifying the needs and goals of each party in a negotiation and addressing both (seeing how divergent needs sometimes make a perfect match despite) and being respectful and polite. I also studied Neuro-Associative Conditioning and EST which taught me how to anchor ideas subconsciously in others and how to 'enroll' others into participating in visions we develop.

Absolutely criminal that AtLA wasn't mentioned.
You mean the greatest series ever made that balances compelling story-telling with whimsy, morals, and beautiful character arcs, and also manages to weave in a soft and hard magic system that's baked itself into the social conscious, with fans the globe over pretending to water bend whenever we go swimming (or have a bath...). Yeah, that would have to have its own dedicated talk.
@@Jamoe I do, in fact, mean that, yes. :) Accurate description. Though I think AtLA is almost entirely on the 'hard' side of the continuum (cf. Sanderson 2007: "[soft] magic [is] for visuals and for ambiance, but not for plot", e.g.), and I would argue that the social consciousness of the show occurred in two distinct phases (original airing, Netflix rerelease), each one affecting a different generation (see Twenge, 2017, for research on this generational divide and when it occurs) in a different way. Regardless, no argument with "the greatest series ever made". Looking forward to that talk.
Hi Jamie! Great video, realise this came out a while ago but was wondering what work experience you had prior to techstars. I just finished my masters at Imperial, and was thinking of applying for the associate position but am worried I am not bringing enough in terms of previous internships or relevant skills.
No directly relevant experience, but I had a track record for being thrown into ambiguous situations and navigating them with success, and being resilient in the face of knock-backs. Your role is to assist in running the accelerator, and then support the founders in whatever they need to get up and running. My T-shaped offering was experience in CZcams, digital marketing, and producing things, so a little specialised and a little general. I got that from this channel, winning at digital marketing competition at Oxford, and starting a few projects from scratch, e.g. OxTweet, an online business, running fundraising events, and coming up with new ways to fundraise money to break records.
Super gorgeous!
