I have a cynical view on this. They’re not my family. I’m actually a prostitute. They pay me. I do the job to the best of my ability and I leave after the job is done. No reason to catch feelings.😂
I had worked as an engineer for more than 40 years starting in So Calif. I was laid off more than 10 times and I only quit 2 times on my own. I have lived all over the country. I learned that no job was secured. My job was affected by investors or political climate. Companies never card for any employee. So much for hard working and free enterprise. Longest I worked for one company was 4 years. I had worked for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft when they hired 25,000 new employees a year., 500 new orientations a week. They had 50,000 employees and the company was all gone. I collect pension form 2 companies and worked for both 2 times to be vested. Both companies had changed name numerous times. I had always lived on 30/20/50 rule (tax/saving/expense). I always lived within my means. I retired very comfortable now.
I needed a video like this. I just recently got official word that I will be laid off in May 31st. I guess for what it's worth, it's the "nicer" version of a layoff, as my company is giving me 2 months to get situated with the situation, then will follow it with 3 months severance package. Nonetheless, it is difficult, as I've never been laid off in my entire career I've been in for 16 years. But hearing your message gives me hope, and this entire ordeal is teaching me so many lessons, as I gear myself up to step into my next path forward.

Hey Philip, I want to thank you for sharing your thoughts and making a video about them. As someone who was laid off back in October of last year, it's been rough trying to stay positive while looking for a job in an industry that isn't doing too well right now. You just made me realize that there is still hope for me, that there is something for me out there and I can't give up just yet. So thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this. I really hope more people see this cause this video is an absolute gem.
My opinion is if you're gonna work in tech, biotech or whatever industry you're in. Work in a city known for that industry. That way you don't have to uproot your family whenever something happens.
Thank you for your positivity. I had to lay two people off, and it has really upset me. It's not a good place to be whether leadership laying people off, whether an employee getting laid off, or whether you're one of the ones left to pick up the pieces of your team, and having to wear many hats. It's a hard time. We should all be good to each other.

I lost my job in December. Tech is crazy right now; even the VP and Sr. Director roles I'm applying to have 200+ applications (according to LinkedIn). I've never had this much trouble finding a job, even during COVID. I'm starting to look outside of tech now.
great points. only issue of contention is around CEO's being positive re embracing change. I'd argue that embracing change is a lot easier with a 200MM parachute. While change can be positive and is a foundational truth in life, sudden change in economic security that runs out in 2-3 months is more threat than change. Not knocking your arguments, just venting after 7 months of emotional turmoil including 1 layoff and potentially 2..we'll see.
Yess this is particularly painful. As a US citizen living in London, my visa would have expired within 60 days as well. And with a baby on the way, moving back to the states was NOT ideal...I think these principles are that much more important for folks like us. Always staying ready and not depending on our employers for our family's stability is critical!
Everyone I know seems to be getting laid off and sadly industries are being destroyed by Ai, horrible management at these companies and poor government economic decisions that dried up investment and destroyed the economy. I don’t see any of these jobs coming back. Brace for an ugly impact.

Dude, this is only the 2nd video of yours that I watched. The first was excellent. I’m much older than you and that doesn’t mean anything more than I’ve lived longer. Let the lesson be: start your own company. You are smart enough, you are honest with yourself, you know how to network, you can build products for a digital world, and you can do it. Think beyond “I’m a software engineer.” Maybe it’s time to define yourself larger than this. Start saying “I’m an entrepreneur with a software development background.” Put control in your own hands.
I’m also on the edge of getting laid off. I heard a lot of rumours from my coworkers but the company said they put off the layoff decision so nothing happened yet. However, I’ve been stagnant for several months now in terms of learning with fewer tasks at hand, which could be seen as a comfort zone. But thank you for giving me the reminder at 2:02 that I maybe should move on from them too. I’m going to apply for a new job tomorrow.
Whether the rumours are true or not, ABRL Always Be Ready to Leave (whether its your choice or theirs). Get an emergency fund set up if you don't have one now, keep your resume up to date, learn a new skill that's in demand, keep a set of interview dress clothes clean and ready to go, pay attention to what is going on in any company and industry you work in, and network (even if you just make one new contact a month) 90% of your co workers are not going to be doing all of the items I just mentioned. Be in the 10%.

Let go of security. You must not have kids or people who depend on you financially. I’ve been laid off. Twice. Knowing that your family might not have a roof over their heads or food to eat. It is the worst feeling ever.
All the more reason to have an emergency fund set up so you're not in panic mode. When you have that money set aside, you're going to be more confidant when you go on interviews.
CEO's can afford to be optimistic about change. They have enough money to not worry for probably years or ever. They can still get access to the best medical care. If companies eliminate jobs, rip away discounted healthcare, etc.., then we need taxes to give ppl basic income, high quality medical care & free education to help workers displaced by tech or massive unregulated outsourcing.
Watching this since most of my tech friends got laid off. I work at a fintech firm but we didn't hire anyone really during 2021-22. So hopefully, that means I'm good.

@dustin 1. Joining a FAANG is great if you want to go really really deep in something. But in my opinion, its hard to see the big picture at a FAANG. A startup or an agency will stretch you way more in that area - you'll get good at a lot of different things - you'll get used to wearing a lot of different hats - and most importantly you'll have a better shot at finding out what YOU really love to do. (Do more things, find out what makes you, you.)
2. A long, windy path in my 20s after college finally brought me into tech. Asking myself the hard questions during college and after. "Am I really passionate about medicine?" Finding out the answer was "no" was one part of the journey. Figuring out what to do next was the other part. Don't be afraid of change - figure out what you're great at and make micro decisions now to form the career you see yourself in 20 years.
lol its not that CEOs are always optimistic... its that they're great liars... they have to be otherwise everyone under them will be depressed or full of doubt that the company doesn't know what they're doing ... while in fact, the company including the CEO might actually not know what they're doing... part of the job
The CEOs are marketing folks and they are supposed to project a positive vision. But the reality is that the world around us is changing and the disruptions are going to be huge. AI is the major unknown.
Yeah these companies played the Long Game by hiring too many to Shortly boost stock revenue to prove they are acquiring the best talent. They are now playing the Long Game by Firing to Shortly boost stock prices to prove to shareholders that they are lean when in reality they mismanaged and hired too much during COVID. These same managers will Shortly overstock AI jobs only to not structure any real market gain. It will backfire Shortly to return to normal programming, basic analyst jobs etc. all to the detriment of the lower employees and not upper management!
There's nosuch think as job security........Unless you create it..- We need to fully and wholeheartedly accept that jobs are not secure, right now or ten years from now. And we need to accept that this is okay. It’s okay because there’s really no other alternative! We don’t have a choice in the matter.
