  • This is the Flintridge & Portola Valley Railroad, a 7 1/2" private live steam railroad in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to this main program, there are lots of supplemental features accessible via the menu at the end. This is a DVD I produced that I am now making available for free ad supported on CZcams including all the bonus material. Enjoy!

    Wonderful video and what a fantastic accomplishment this whole operation is. Whenever I watch excellent live steam videos like this two thoughts always come to mind:
    1. Who built the engines? I am a home shop machinist interested in getting into live steam and would just love to see a video on the production of these outstanding locos and accessories. Someone obviously has tremendous talent as well as a comprehensive shop able to handle the larger casting. Would love a video tour of this.
    2. What are ballpark costs to get into engines of this size? Are there casting kits available?
    Thanks for sharing this wonderful story.

      @MasseeMedia  Před 9 lety

      +RedDog Willys Jeep Heya RedDog. I wrote a companion story about the construction of these locomotives that appears as the cover article of the September / October 2010 issue of Live Steam & Outdoor Railroading magazine. Back issues can be ordered from the Village Press website. The three C-16 locomotives were built by Peter, Ron and Bill, people featured in the video. The larger K-27 was built by Richard Ulin, who is a professional model builder. The three C-16 locomotives use Conway C-19 castings that are no longer available, and the locomotives were built mostly from direct measurement of the real thing. No comprehensive drawings exist. The 268 is on display in Gunnison, CO and the #278 is on display in Cimmaron, CO although has been temporarily removed for cosmetic restoration.
      If you want to build a similar narrow gauge locomotive with a lot of successful build history and support, I recommend you try Tom Artzburger's castings and plans for Rio Grande Southern #20. Do note that an engine of that size has some pretty hefty castings, so plan on having at least a 12X36 lathe and a good size (RF-45) bench top mill or full size knee mill. You can also, for a price, have Tom send you some or all of the pieces pre-machined.
      For general information on building live steam locomotives, I recommend the book, "So you want to build a live steam locomotive" by Joe Nelson, also available from Village Press. In addition, "Building the Pennsylvania A3 Switcher" by Kozo Hiraoka is an excellent reference for very detailed steps on how to machine every part of a locomotive, even if you don't plan to build that particular engine. There is also a discussion group on Chaski.org that can provide support and help. A lot of people document their builds there.
      Before you do anything I also recommend a visit to your nearest live steam club (see Discover Live Steam website track map or club list) and take a look around to get a better sense of what is out there and what you might want.
      Good luck!

  • @ethanyotter7874
    @ethanyotter7874 Před 9 lety

    so, why is the K-27 considered "too big" for their railway? is it due to weight or length of the locomotive in comparison to the turn radii? the triple header is funny- the locomotives are nearly longer then the cars they are hauling! great video as usual, Mike.

    • @FutureRailProductions
      @FutureRailProductions Před 8 lety +1

      +ethan yotter It's almost too big for the curves. My guess is the length and the size of it has a factor in it, and probably makes it hard to fit through certain areas as well. Like the part of the line that's shown from 14:59 to 15:57. Plus the curves up to the driveway bridge looks a bit tight, so that's probably why the K-27 is being turned around at 16:03.

    • @MasseeMedia
      @MasseeMedia  Před 8 lety +1

      +ethan yotter The two ends of the railroad have sharp curves, and the K-27 has a long rigid wheelbase. Imagine stuffing a long bar through a curved pipe. Eventually the bar will be too long for the curve and will bind.

    I grew up living in Glendale, and my uncle lived in Flintridge. His neighbor had a train running around the house, and it was always a very special day when he was out there playing. He also had a lookout tower, and we got to go up there once. I wonder if that was Francis, and I wonder if you were one of those kids I saw riding around the house. Any of this sound familiar? I never got to ride that train. What would it take to get a ticket to ride one of these?

    • @MasseeMedia
      @MasseeMedia  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Edward. Yes that was most likely Francis Moseley or Disney animator Ollie Johnston's house. If you would like to experience 7.5" gauge live steam nearby, visit the Riverside Live Steamers in Hunter Park, or Los Angeles Live Steamers in Griffith Park on one of their public run days. If you're no longer in SoCal, there's clubs elsewhere in many parts of the country.
