    I think a lot of beginners and intermediate musicians regardless of instrument struggle because they fail to train their ears FIRST. Teach yourself to expect to hear a certain sound when you play different intervals. Make sure your guitar is setup properly and memorize what the open strings sound like so you can hear them in your mind without playing. This gives your mind an anchor for learning everything else. It is like your home on a map. It gives you a reference point so you are never lost. Then you just have to explore and learn the different moods certain intervals make. Some are sad, some joyful, some are strange and horrible.
