Sliding doors have come a long way from their days as a cheap alternative to a french door. In today's video, we take a tour through the different materials and tiers that sliding doors are available in. Which one is right for you?

As usual, lots of great info. One thing you didn't mention is how the door seal works at the end OPPOSITE of the handle.
We have a 23 year old, builder grade sliding door where there's a big gap (almost 1/4") that I think may have had some type of furring strip but I now have to push foam into that gap (the WHOLE lenght of the door) at peak summer and winter times. Can you talk about how that area is sealed on today's doors?
Also, a video comparing and contrasting French doors vs. sliding doors would be very helpful.
Thanks for all videos. The effort you put into them shows every time!
I used Jeff's list to find someone in my area. Had gotten 6 quotes, and the company he recommended is the one we're going with.
Awesome! Keep me posted.
I am interested in the EuroWall large sliding doors for 32 ft opening. Can I contact you?
Absolutely. If you're in Houston call our office at 832-900-7024. If you're somewhere else please visit TheWindowExperts.com
Jeffslist website no longer works
I learn so much about the latest innovations from your CZcams Channel that when I go to local shops it's easy to tell when they are trying to off-load something on me or are more locked into a specific brand (that they are pushing heavily) than they are willing to admit.
One installation contractor wrote up a big proposal and then (when I didn't immediately fill out a credit app) he told me "This deal expires the moment you walk out the door!"
I cringe to think that type of hard sell works on anyone.
I'm glad you find out videos helpful! Thank you for watching
Jeff thank you for all your good information
Another great video Jeff!
Thank you for watching. I'm glad it was helpful.
wow I lisened jeff's informative introduction about several windows. And I learned a lot from him. That's very nice
Thanks for watching and your comment.
Howdy Jeff… trying wrap up our window and sliding door purchase. Our hang up is the installation of the sliding glass doors. I’ve had three different quotes with three different install techniques😳 1. Trim off the sides and place the new door in. 2. Remove the door frame and insert new door and frame. 3. Remove door frame and the frame and redo the flashing etc. I feel option 2 is the best solution but Northwest insists on option 1. They are installing Anlin Del Mar and Malibu series sliders.
Thanks😊
If you're in California, option 1 is the gold standard.
Wow, very informative thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great video.
Just got a new sliding glass door. Okna 8800. Best sliding glass door I've ever had
Awesome! Congratulations.
Hello Mr. jeff.

Great! I am glad that we were able to help.
Thank you so much for the insight on these sliding doors. I bought 2 sets of composite sliding doors soon to be delivered. I have a bank of three sets of French doors that should also be replaced, not not sure if we want sliding doors where it's a living room - how well will it look and how well will they operate in the Living Room - the most livable room? Thanks for the perspectives - now I know more about doors. I'm in Arizona!!! I needed black frames to match the rest of the house.
I wouldn't hesitate to use a sliding door there. They're very commonly used for that now.
Thanks Jeff 😊,
JaneLee 🕊️
Thank you!
Jeff, what would be a ballpark price per square foot on the Western aluminum door you reviewed?
Would be great if you did a video on lift and slide doors too, especially comparing to normal sliders. Especially curious if there are any fiberglass options. All the options I have found are either aluminum or vinyl.
I do not have any lift and slide products to demonstrate. When I get one, I'll make a video about it.
Hi Jeff ~ Thanks so much for your great, informative videos. Are aluminum frames significantly better at blocking outside noise from coming in than vinyl frames? Would value your feedback!
Actually, vinyl is better at sound reduction than aluminum. I'd avoid aluminum if sound is a big concern.
Great Video again sir. Are Marvin Coastline windows thermally broken?
Thermally broken windows are only available in aluminum products. Marvin doesn't make any products with aluminum except as a cladding. Cladding does not need to have a thermal break.
@@HoustonWindowExperts Now im really confused. The windows I am looking at are fully aluminum as are the s/doors. All are from the coastline range or so im told. No cladding on windows or doors. Are either thermally broken? I cannot find details.
Jennifer, I am so sorry that I confused you. I just went online to look at this product and realizd that I was wrong. I was not familiar with the all-aluminum version of the Marvin impact windows. In Texas, we do not have that product. The only products that I've seen in Texas have a wood interior or they are made from fiberglass.
Please accept my apologies. I do not know if they make a thermally improved aluminum product or not, the website was not very clear.
If they do make a thermally improved product, that would be better but it's not necessary in Florida. Thermally improved products do better in cold climates than they do in warm climates.
@@HoustonWindowExperts No need to apologise sir, I understand. Please also feel free to edit your original reply if you see fit for your viewers. I did not intend ask you something that you wouldn't be aware of. Please except mine and thank YOU for still clarifying and providing the answer I needed.
your video was very helpful I was thinking to put fiberglass french doors for patio what are your thoughts on this? I live in washington state
That sounds like a great idea to me! They do really well in your climate.
it is nice style ,i like it.and hopefully we can have a talk for futhure
Sounds good to me.
Thank you for the videos. They have been very helpful. I wished there was a business around me that carried more than one or two products. I am trying to decide between the Quaker Modern Vu and the Pella Impervia patio door. The door will be in direct sunlight. Also, extreme temperature variations. Priorities are longevity, smooth sliding, and increased view. Good value, not cheap. What would be your recommendation between the two? Any other that you would recommend? Thanks again.
I think that the Pella product would serve you better in this scenario. I am not sure what part of the country you live in, but we do have a list of great window companies all around the country that we endorse. Maybe we know someone near you?

@@HoustonWindowExperts Thank you for the quick reply. I did check out JeffsList, unfortunately there were no companies in Sandpoint ID. Once again thank you for the great resource.
Thanks. If you find a great window company in that area, please let me know.
@@HoustonWindowExperts One last question. I also started to look at the Marvin Essential and Elevate. Would you recommend either of these over the Pella Impervia for a patio door? Thanks again. I'll let you know if I have a great experience with a company in this area.
The Marvin product is going to be superior in many ways. You can expect to pay more money for it also.
I live in Florida an we have the best sliding doors an windows the world could offer impact everything
Hi Jeff! Quick question… How about the vinyl sliding doors of Windsor? Are you as impressed by those as by their classic vinyl windows?😃
Yes, they are very nice.
@@HoustonWindowExperts Ah okay, good to know. Thanks again Jeff!
You're welcome
any major difference between a steel french door and fiberglass besides weight?
Steel will not be as efficient and it's also is much more expensive.
Impervia va lifestyle sliding door?
What would you pick
Impervia for sure. You could also consider Infinity from Marvin.
Hi Jeff I really like your videos I would need your help if possible I am looking for a double sliding kitchen/patio door I do have a small kitchen so the sliding door would be good for me but I also want one side to let my dogs out into a private area the other side will open up to the backyard I would like to have a really good quality door nothing cheap like from Home Depot or anything like that can you help or anybody in the comment section any help would be appreciated
What you want is called a multi slide door. They will have a minimum of three panels and I'd suggest it be AT LEAST 12' wide.

Do you install in Sacramento?
No, I do not. But I have a friend in your area who does really good work.

How large and how much is that first vinyl black sliding door?
That door is 16' wide and 8' tall. It cost about $8000
@@HoustonWindowExperts thanks for the reply. That space and size is nice.
Too bad weather durability of fiberglass versus aluminum versus vinyl was not discussed. Will white fiberglass have to be painted some day?
Good fiberglass will not need paint for probably 30 years.
what about screens?
They come with screens.
Thank you so much…in your video you didn’t mention them or show them. Is there any difference in screens between vinyl, alum, etc? Or are the screens pretty much all the same regardless of material.
Most companies include a screen with their windows or doors. However, some do make a better screen than others. Check with your local dealer about what options are available for screens in your area.
