    Thank you for a cute and quick quilt pattern.
    I found that cutting the strips in half (22” vs 44”) before sewing the strip sets together helps eliminate the middle waviness plus you can get more variety in your block sets.

    Highly recommend. I just completed this quilt using 'adel in autumn' jelly roll, half metre of olive stripes for binding and the backing set of 'fall gatherings' from fat quarter shop. I'm not an expert but found this easy to follow using a combination of this video and downloading the pattern. I wanted to use all the fabric in the jelly roll so I did 7 by 7 squares instead of 6 by 7 in the video and even had enough left to make a 'quillow' the size of a standard pillow case to store my quilt in. Delighted.

    I'm making a quilt for daughter's friend in high school, who is a boy. It's difficult to make a quilt for a guy because a lot of quilts have patterns like stars and are more feminine. Also, for this quilt, I'm using their school colors which are red, white and black so I'm limited to patterns. I've been searching for ideas beyond just squares, so I think this one will look good. I was thinking about red and white 4 block squares with black searching but this might be easier because I love jelly rolls, even if I have to cut 100 strips of fabric. May try this out. Oh, also, he's very tall. EEK. But, he's my daughter's best friend and she wanted something to give him that represents his personality. Thank you for this. I've followed some of your other patterns in the past and have loved them.

      print from the Hop, Skip and Jump collection here: www.fatquartershop.com/moda-fabric/hope-skip-and-a-jump-american-jane-moda-fabrics
      or another print from the same designer here: www.fatquartershop.com/american-jane-moda-fabrics

  • @barbaraholland1816
    @barbaraholland1816 Před 2 lety

    I started this from a tutorial by Jenny at Missouri Quilts but was called the Two Step Quilt. My blocks did not turn out to be 9" because I think my needle was bent and my seams ended being between 1/4" - 3/8" . If I cut my long strip to match the total size of the square and two sewn strips, will this still look ok???

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  Před 4 lety +4

      Hello! You will need 2 print Jelly Rolls and 2 Bella Solid Charm Packs to do this version. Follow the instructions, but double the stripsets and make 81 blocks. Make 9 rows with 9 blocks each. That will be 77" square unfinished. Add borders to the size you want the quilt to finish. I suggest to cut 4.5" wide borders on each side and that will finish at 84.5" square.

    • @newbeequilter
      @newbeequilter Před 7 lety +5

      + Benji Graham - I think the steam is also a contributor to the waviness of those strip sets :-( Personally, I'd rather not use steam; it may take some more time in the pressing, but think it yields more successful results in accurate cutting and sewing.

    • @maryschiff9580
      @maryschiff9580 Před 7 lety +4

      I agree, I use a dry iron and starch to keep the material as flat as possible. I have just finished putting all my blocks together, didn't have any trouble with waviness, and am squaring them up.

    • @lindabowser7451

      Press. Do not iron strips. No smooshing the iron around. Set seams without steam. Steam in pressing is overrated. It tends to stretch the fabric.

      Me too- I double checked the video and pattern instructions, did the math again, I think my seams are too skinny. My jelly roll strips have a scalloped edge which has put me askew. Will block as best I can then maybe trim to square up before I assemble to top.

      I am attempting my first quilt. Was going to try this pattern but smaller scale since my jelly roll only contains 20 strips. I'm thinking it won't look good since the pattern will repeat too often. HELP! Would appreciate feedback from someone with quilting experience as to whether this pattern would work with a jelly roll containing 20 strips (5 designs - 4 each)? Thanks.
