This is absolutely your best film you have made. I love this guy, he's so genuine, clearly very smart, and really cares a lot about conservation. I find myself suspending my disbelief on a lot of this stuff because it makes life more colorful and wonderful. I really hope this guy finds this bird.

Not crazy, but definitely a dreamer. I too hope he finds more than one. Not so much for his sake (but it would make him famous), but for the species sake.

oh wow, you guys captured Rhys so well!...although I'm sure you would have found him to be one of the easiest people to film and capture because he is just so truely relaxed & one of the most deeply genuine & spiritually content characters you'll ever meet, complete with an ( essential I would say) heslthy dose of light hearted introspective humour that all the best teachers seem to be infused with in this kids eyes!...... man, it has been waaay too long since I've had the pleasure and good fortune to share sp.Ace with this old friend... many years sgo as a typically mischievous and slightly rest.less teenager, unknowingly searching for inspiration and meaning in life from the adults around me, growing up in a small vibrant kiwi community Rhys was, and so obviously still is, a character that with more understanding of my.self now I've come to real.eyes was like a welcoming & joyous lighthouse keeper, who shared his energy & sp.ace so genuinely with this impressionable young sailer, who didn't even really overstand yet that I might have needed help navigating the broad horizons and ocean of life, but was nonetheless luckily & naturally attracted to the light of this love.able friend much like the moth to the flame... Rhys, I bet you're still on your little patch of self made paradise I remember, it certainly looks the same just like you I can't believe you're in your 70's a d I'm hitting 50 but damn tootin' you're the same inspirational spirit I can see that the the lense of time and video camera alike ....so good to hear your infectious laugh a.gsin & just see how your energy has infected the viewers by the comments section even, you're truely infectious bro so I just had to throw in my deepest best wishes and it's just so typically awe.some to see you, of course, enjoying your mystic.all journey in every sense of the word with your birds & y(our) bush... and isn't it just absolutely classic the cosmic joke of it all I know you over.stsnd - tthe gods have got such a bloody good sense of humour haven't they, just like you, so of course you're get it - you're the one to be blessed with the song of the grey ghost while us mere mortals wander aimlessly immersed in the caco.phony of snivelisation... perfectly funny & funnily enough that's just perfect to me and you no doubt.
can't wait to see you a.gain one of these days
    Matt (and Luke)
    ..no doubt

Rhys is no "loner" nor bird-brain. The Crow River which flows into the Karamea River was so-named after the Grey Wattled Crow (Kokako) by Browning, a government surveyor, around 1870. The birds were abundant.

I heard what I've sounded a lot like a Kokako when I was in Blackball in 2005. That sound has stuck with me ever since. Unlike anything I've ever heard before ... and I am a very good Bellbird and Tui impersonator.

There are still a lot of North Island Kokako, but I was reading in a book that the last confirmedsighting of the South Island Kokako was 2007, and they say it may be extinct from there. Haven't watch the full video yet when writing this, but I don't think it's been 50 years, the book I'd say was a pretty trustworthy source.

Not confirmed I believe, But having heard what was convincing calls (unlike those played here) in the same site about the same time, belief persists. And was heard while poisoning he area, which might give them a few more years.

Discussions with him are supportive of its use. Several sites where these were possibly detected had been regularly poisoned beforehand. One issue is poison operations are not targeted at very low numbers of predators/competitors (ZIP excluded), they protect species probably pest vulnerable (yellowheads a prime example). But those sites poisoning was discontinued (politics, TB successfully controlled) have little chance of these present now, less since ungulate numbers are surging.

This was a really really interesting video to watch. Much better than a bunch of privileged students getting on the piss then destroying their dwellings and street while giving head to your mic. What's with that? Meanwhile some families are living in their cars. The best thing about your videos is that you don't try to be smartarses and you know that silence is often the best interviewing prompt. Keep up the excellent work.
