- Part 2 candid and exclusive interview with Bill Janovitz, the author of a newly published biography about Leon Russell's six-decade career as a musician, songwriter and composer. In this segment, Bill Janovitz sits discusses the end of Shelter Records, Leon Russell's split with Denny Cordell, and the surprising parallels to his collaboration with Elton John.
Bill Janovitz is the singer, songwriter, and guitarist for Buffalo Tom. Formed with fellow band members Chris Colbourn and Tom Maginnis, Buffalo Tom came together in 1986 and has been active on-and-of since then. Bill Janovitz has parallel careers in real estate and (more pertinently) as an author and biographer. Shortly before COVID hit, he was gearing up to write a biography on the late Leon Russell. The pandemic created an initial slow-down, but soon turned into an ironic advantage, as the figures he chose to interview were more available to conduct remote interviews.
The new Bill Janovitz book, "Leon Russell: The Master of Space and Time's Journey Through Rock & Roll History" is available to purchase on The Church Studio's online store: thechurchstudio.com/product/l...

Reading Book now. What a Legend Leon. Thanks for your work Mr. Janovitz.
Yes, sir--God bless him, because he surely blessed all of us.
I’m half way through Bill’s book. What an AMAZING piece of literature. So well-written. Done with such respect. Pure genius. I bought S. Toderoff’s book and chucked it after the first 10 pages. We were promised that Steve would unlock Leon’s deep hidden secrets. No, not! Bill’s book is a home run. His research, language is impeccable. I’m going to send it to my brother in FL. who’s a recording artist. ❤
Great to hear this info, on such an influential musician. Still amazing that a high school baritone horn player from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma would play on over 650 or more recordings and change the direction of music for ever.
Indeed! We are incredibly grateful to Bill for writing his book and putting such extensive research into it, and for ultimately putting so much more of Leon's story out to the public!
This guy is great to listen to. Thanks for adding this to the channel for all of us to see. Im going to get the book for sure. I love all things Leon Russell.
Absolutely! It was a huge honor to have the opportunity to share Bill's commentary!
Fantastic interview and sharing. I'm really enjoying the new MOSAT book! It's phenomenal and so good to see the reality come through. Thank you.
Bill is so great!
Really enjoying the Delaney & Bonnie, Joe Cocker and Grease Band information in the book!
Don Waz would of been amazing. Gregg Allman's last album is a treasure. Would of been very cool to have a similar last album from Leon.
Yes, it was Greg’s best since his solo debut - and I wholeheartedly agree that a Don Was could’ve done a nice job with a similar final effort from Leon.
is it true that Leon & Denny basically used Joe Cocker as a way to fund Shelter Records on money they (Leon & Denny) made doing the Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour (that only Cocker himself was responsible for all the tour's expenses and was left basically broke and "in a heap" in LA when the tour ended?)... wasn't there a lot of animosity between Cocker & Leon & Denny as a result of how it all that went down????.
Leon and Denny didn't make money from the MD&E tour either. Denny was very wealthy, he had made a lot of money with Procol Harum and before that, with the Moody Blue's first hit Go Now. Leon made a lot of money as first call studio musician. Denny was Joe Cocker's manager.
