  • Eloy Lorenzo on what the locals are saying to be the longest wave ever ridden in over 20 years at Uluwatu. As I filmed from the beach, I couldn't believe how long the wave actually went on for. It was a remarkable sight.

This day (and still today) may be a turning point for Uluwatu. It was a dream day for tow-in teams and yet only one team out. No jet skis teams in the afternoon where 6 to 7 wave-sets of 15 to 20 feet walls would perfectly peel off from The Bombie all the way down through Corners. Repeat every less than 10 minutes. All unridden as the 2 or 3 paddle guys out had no chance. A day and a swell when you actually want to see jet ski teams. Good job Eloy and partner!

Big Ulu's doesn't always line up and peel perfectly like that. We had a few big swells in the past years and it was nothing like this one. But we have the feeling Ulu's will now be in the tow-in surfers radar,. because we have never seen waves this big, this rip-able anywhere. A spectacle to be hold of. A show to witness.

the speed needed for ultrBig Ulu’s can only be met via ski n weight of tow board…I saw a video where guys were trying to keep up riding 9-10’ boards and it wasn’t working out too well. the surfing looked totally different as well. i’m sure that there’s a “simple” physics algorithm for how, when and why towing w a ski n heavier tow boards are needed and at what point on which breaks does each happenstance occur. pretty interesting when you consider all of the factors.
this one time I surfed epic+ down beach AC NJ 12-15 ft and reeling rights that were kinda thin lipped, standing up and actually shreddable; so many factors came into play. the biggest one was being at a beach directly in the swell direction of an off shore dredge so the dredge was pulling up sand out in the middle of the “inverted L” that’s the shape of the sand barrier island. this bathymetry focused the swell in such a way that my 6’5 32L (approx as my buddy who custom shaped it doesn’t overly focus on the big L numbers.) the step up board ridden as quad w a really tight pin tail finally found a wave that could hold it. This board loved going as deep top to bottom as I could push it on close to 3x over head surf. that same morning a different friend was trying to ride like a 5’10 or 6’1 maybe and my buddy who was out w me riding a 7’0 was like, nah man you NEED a step up today. It was tough being able to paddle into the wave without being way late or under the lip in a funny way. The extra float of the step up/mini gun helped w getting into the wave. yeah some really memorable rides. haven’t ridden the board in waves like that since and this was like 5-6 years ago
