Supporting Lung Health With Elecampane: How to use this powerful herbal Remedy.
I often get asked: “What herbs are good for lung support?” Or “I have a phlegmy cough, or a wet, damp lung infection that is not resolving...help?.”
My answer: "It depends on who is experiencing the issue." And I really mean that! I look at the person and not the health issue. Still, I thought it might be helpful to learn a bit about elecampane and how it is used, since it's an excellent remedy to include in the materia medica for the upper respiratory system.
My first choice for general lung issues is mullein, but sometimes we need an herb with strong cleansing action too, so that is where elecampane comes into the picture.
(More on Mullein here: • Love Your Lungs: How T... • MULLEIN Deep Dive: Lun... • MULLEIN Deep Dive (Pt.... and • MULLEIN Deep Dive (Pt.... )
    Therapeutic Properties
Elecampane is stellar in helping to clear phlegm and infections from the upper respiratory system: for coughs, colds, bronchitis, asthma, and more.
Its energetics are spicy, drying, warming, dispersing, and moving, making it especially appropriate for wet, damp, stagnant, and cold situations.
For dry coughs (or generally dry conditions), I like to combine elecampane with marshmallow, to soothe and soften its drying, and potentially irritating effects.
It is also used for stimulating digestive activity, increasing bile production, and digestive enzymes, while easing gas, and supporting bowel movements, and as a vermifuge (de-wormer). But the digestive focus is for another lesson.
    Actions
Antimicrobial (cleanser), expectorant, anti-tussive (against coughs), bronchodilator (opens lungs).
    How To Use
Since a lot of elecampane’s therapeutics are in its aromatics, I prefer to use it as a tincture made from freshly dug roots, which captures its volatile compounds effectively.
Often dried elecampane doesn't have much aroma (smell it and see), which means it has lost a lot of its therapeutic qualities.
ELECAMPANE TINCTURE FORMULA: 1 part fresh root by weight to 2 parts menstruum by volume. The menstruum: 65%-75% alcohol.
    .
TO INGEST: add drops into a very small amount of warm water. Let your taste buds take in the flavor and aroma. Or you can add to mullein tea.
    Dosage: 10--40 drops; 1-5x a day
Length of use: I suggest consuming it only for 1-2 weeks at a time. Some herbalists think it is fine to ingest for longer periods of time, but since it's so strong….
Cautionary note: Avoid during pregnancy. May cause vomiting and diarrhea in large doses. Please research any new food or medicine, go slowly, learn, and discuss using it with your healthcare provider. I don’t use elecampane lightly, but when really needed.
Please note: This information is not meant to replace medical advice.
Please check our other Elecampane videos to meet it in flower here • Hello ELECAMPANE: Lung... and to learn how to dig it up here: • Digging ELECAMPANE: LU... .
    Wishing you respiratory health!
    In gratitude,
    Dina

    • @DinaFalconi
      @DinaFalconi  Před 3 měsíci +1

Best to tincture, but I only make it with alcohol. Since you don't want to use alcohol, you can def. make an infusion (long steeped tea) with it. For details on making this kind of an infusion, check our video here czcams.com/video/VZ4u657KKVE/video.html for dandelion root, but you'll replace the dandelion with elecampane. And the dosage is much less than dandelion, like 2-3oz of the elecampane infusion 1-3 times a day.

    • @DinaFalconi
      @DinaFalconi  Před 2 lety +2

Thanks for your comment. If the roots smells wonderful (strong and fragrant) then its still full of good medicine. If you like, use as tea just make sure to cover the steeping lid to keep in the volatile oils. And yes, you can use it to make tincture. Ratio for dried is 1 part herb by weight to 4-5 parts menstruum by volume. The menstruum can be in the 50% alcohol range. Best wishes!

understand your recommendation of using fresh elecampane root for tinctures. I will most definitely grow some in my My question is will the tincture still be effective if processed with dry root from a reputable source, such as Mountain Rose Herbs?
I'd like to introduce this as a tincture to help myself and asthmatic husband. But really don't have access to fresh root, unless you can recommend a supplier. I usually go with mountain rose herbs for plants I'm not able to grow

Hello Tina, I've been responding to your email with this question, with no luck. Your email address keeps rejecting my emails. This is the rejection message I keep getting:
"Delivery has failed. Your message couldn't be delivered. Despite repeated attempts to contact the recipient's email system it didn't respond.
Contact the recipient by some other means (by phone, for example) and ask them to tell their email admin that it appears that their email system isn't accepting connection requests from your email system. Give them the error details shown below. It's likely that the recipient's email admin is the only one who can fix this problem.
For more information and tips to fix this issue see this article: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=389361."
Anyway to answer your questions: Yes, fresh is best, but roots that are dried properly, that have retained their flavor and aroma, are good too. So, the question is whether the tincture contains a potent root.
Perhaps you have a local herbalist who makes tinctures that you could connect with about this. Or I would think companies like Herb Pharm make a good elecampane tincture.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
      Be well,

Generally speaking, you can make an herbal infusion with elecampane and mullein and let steep for 4 hours, tightly lidded. Please see the mullein infusion video here: czcams.com/video/Vte91ULpbXg/video.html You can add thyme and mint to it as well.

I think some of you folks, especially women, have the opinion that you have to take all kinds of herbs and stuff to be healthy. I find this completely wrong.
If you take a drug for health reasons you have to be (at least a little bit, like a headache) sick. If that is not the case you should not take any medicine.
And if you ARE sick and you only treat the symptoms, you may keep sick until your life is changed in a good way, so that the origins of your disease disappear.
But I think there is no drug that you should consume to prevent some disease you think you could eventually get... You even might get sick by that.
Just eat proper food! Meat (organic, venison, from little farms, inner organs), milk & eggs, fruits/vegetables (organic, from little farms or someones garden) and not too much carbohydrates. Like our ancestors did.
