- The animation illustrates the growing importance of mangroves to the health of the planet and our future. An integral link between land and sea, mangroves protect coastal areas and communities from hurricanes, tsunamis, flooding and erosion, while providing a multitude of goods and ecosystem services for people. Mangroves act as huge carbon stores, often storing 5x more than inland rainforests, and are amongst the world’s most productive fishing grounds. Mangroves are disappearing at an alarming rate and these unique and critical ecosystems need protecting and restoring.
Since 1992, the Mangrove Action Project (MAP) has worked to educate the public about mangrove forests, to promote and engage in mangrove conservation and restoration. Our mission is to provide mangrove restoration and conservation education, training, and consulting that promotes community- based, sustainable management of coastal resources.
MAP is dedicated to reversing the degradation and loss of mangrove forests. These critical coastal ecosystems linking land and sea, play a vital role in helping to keep our planet and people healthy. Although now regarded as one of the most important ecosystems, mangrove forests are among the most threatened habitats in the world, and mangrove loss is rampant across the globe. By some estimates, less than 50 percent of the world’s mangrove forests were intact at the end of the 20th century.
By demonstrating the importance of mangrove forests through our programs, we are striving for a protected and restored coastline managed sustainably by local communities.
