Drop-Shot Fishing Optimization | Understanding Play Height Underwater

- There's a free fishing simulator for you too! Catch more fish on the drop-shot! We'll go over what your fishing rig looks like underwater and discuss the height of the hook above the bottom. We'll discuss how to get more play height and why that matters. Does rod length matter? Do non-flat bottoms? Can we fish the drop-shot in a kayak? We'll be using some trigonometry for our fishing concepts, but don't worry, we won't show it here.

What was that sonar app you were using? As a bank angler, I'd love a better way to figure out water depth. Or let me know if you know any tricks to guaging water depth such as counting on the drop etc
Excellent video my friend.
This is the most UNDERRATED fishing channel man.
This is literally the most informational fishing video I've come across. Content keeps getting better and better
Thanks Ian! Hope I haven't set too high a bar for KNFS videos, haha. Cheers!
I agree with the guy who said “this is the most underrated fishing channel”. I learned a ton about panfish so far
The best drop shot info ive seen. Great stuff!!
Appreciate that, Passin' Thru! Good luck using the drop-shot!
@@KNFishingSmarts Used it for the first time last weekend. Success, and now a go to option for deep water crappie!!
Never saw the drop shot explained in such detail. Amazing content and thanks for the effort you put into this video. Ill definitely be making adjustments in the distance from the hook to weight😂
Wow this is awesome good job dude, you killed this one!
This is great! I use the drop shot more than any other rig.
Worm inflator helps a bunch too if your using nightcrawlers. Fish can see them easier, and they stay off the bottom.
Inflator really helps if your going to tie on 2 hooks as well.
Thanks for this excellent video! I love how you cover topics that most people don't. Fantastic editing and info as well. Well done.
Much appreciate the kind words, especially from a veteran fisher of the drop-shot rig! Also thanks for the inflator tips. That's sound advice!
Mate - watching this from New Zealand; researching drop shot for Kahawai during the whitebait run but also other species like lake Rotoiti rainbow trout for the smelt runs.
Very informative video and great dropshot calculator! You have a new subscriber; wicked content!
Sweet! Glad you liked this one Barrack. Good luck landing your target species on those runs!
Very enlightening! Great job! New sub!
Thanks Barry! Cheers!
Fantastic content. Subscribed.
So much information here!!! The dropshot is my favorite rig for panfish
Ah, nice! Glad to hear you're using the drop-shot for panfish as well.
This is a brilliant fishing and Dropshot video. I have been struggling with leader length, and now I know why. I really appreciate this. Thank you. Subbed.
Appreciate that! Glad this video could help you understand a bit more on that leader length adjustment.
Eye opening, thanks a million.
This is crazy good info.....wow
I was expecting no less than one million views on this clip. Keep up the good work.
Hmm...that's too much.
Wow man, this is a great breakdown! Great job!
Thanks for the nice comment, kennybrudnicki!
dude this is incredible info- been surf fishing for a while and always thinking about the angles when I am fishing a steep beach and how the bait is presented to the target fish, now started bay and jetty fishing and trying to target bass hiding in tall weeds and i am so use to casting way further out from years of surf fishing. now I realze i need to make adjusments to my rig set up, thanks!!
Very glad you were able to find this video helpful for your fishing, MLOPEZ!
Never thought about that one ! Thanks !
You bet!
Nice analysis. Very helpful.
Thanks James! Glad it's helpful.
So glad I found this channel.
I'm glad you found the channel too. Cheers!
Your videos are amazing and deserve way more views. My only complaint is that I need more of them.😀
I don’t even fish. I just subscribe because I’m interested in native fish observation and keeping. Any chance you’ll be doing more videos like your sunfish series? I’d love to see videos on the other Centrarchids and other families.
Also, the “Creek Cam” was really fun. How do you rig it? Possible video topic.
Very much appreciate that! It'd be nice if I could speed up productions. And yes, I do plan on releasing more ID videos for species within Centrarchidae this year. And I plan to expand to other families soon enough.
With the creek cam. It's either a vice lock grip swivel arm on my GoPro that I'll attach to a branch underwater, a wood frame setup with a camera mount that I sink, or a weighted-aquarium log-mimic decoration that I fastened a camera mount to. Maybe I should make a short video on that. Thanks for the idea!
Thanks!
Thanks very much, Bernard! I've been working on an Esox guide for the channel here and didn't see this. Much appreciate your support! You're the first one to offer the 'Super Thanks' for this channel. Cheers!
Great video!! This is so deep I love it 😍! Do ya think I should just set my tag end at 4ft when fishing kayak as a base? I am lazy at changing leader length lol
Appreciate that. And yeah, I'd figure out what is the greatest length you're comfortable casting in a kayak and then leave it at that. 4 feet might be a bit tedious to cast...but I always like longer when sitting lower to the water.
Super underrated channel.
Thanks Christopher!
How would you factor in buoyant plastics (Zman, mule fishing, etc)? Obviously they would impact the play height, with it vary with the ratio of size of plastic vs size of hook. But are there situations where you would avoid buoyant plastics, or situations where you would specifically seek them out?
Does it matter if using cut bait like worms since you not using any action
What is the most common length of a tag end..?.. and today with braided fishing line .. does the leader line increase in length ? Anybody
I rarely go over 18 inches on my leader for the reason you mentioned. It's just hard to cast. I also don't like the tumbling effect as the bait is flying through the air.
Great video. Love all the animations. Very informational.
Yeah, those long leaders are not simple to work with. I know exactly what you mean when you say "tumbling effect". Thanks again!
what about rivers?
Drop-shot does work well in rivers. Just got to mind how the current is playing/pulling the bait.
ok so if i wanna fish drop shot buy a boat or fish from a pier or bridge got it !!!!!
Ummm. No
Unless there's a fast drift and you're letting line out to hold bottom.
devoted. nice
Yeah...might have gone a bit overboard on this one. =)
