    Ian's "I'm - I'm very sorry" always gets me because it really feels genuine. He would never let another player win on purpose but he knew how close Fabi was to winning yet failed to convert under time pressure. At the same time Ian was probably devastaded himself, leading the tournement just to give it all away in the last few rounds.

    Hikaru and Nepo fell short by agonizingly small margins, but Caruana at some point was there, in the playoff with Gukesh, and then fell off the boat that he had already captured

    Hikaru realising its close to the end of his era, after all this time.
    the young folks like Gukesh will only get better. he didn’t manage to beat them now, it will be even more difficult in the future. Gukesh is only 17 yesrs old after all.

      It's not over for him. He fought very well for this time, but he will try once again. I don't think it's impossible for him to still be a world champion.

    I don't know whether to be happy or sad seeing fabi ang hikaru just breaked my heart and Ian man , that day was too god damn tough , even my country person won , but still , i was not happy at all . Chess is definitely brutual ....

    In all other sports during world cups, the defending champion also plays through all the rounds / stages and gets to the finals. Strange how chess is, the champion is just chilling somewhere while the others fight their hearts out.

    Hikaru is crying without tears and in his head he knows that he is in pain…yes, he makes more money through CZcams videos and he may call it as real job or so…..
    But, he absolutely wanted to win that tournament. So, he is in pain….Sorry Hikaru. Gukesh on that tournament was absolute monster 👍…

      He wanted it more than anything.
      He was capped to a certain point but after he started streaming and gained financial independence from competitive chess it helped hom peak again. So he went through with the jarrative that he doesn't care about competitive chess all that much truth being he cared about it fhe most

      Hikaru did play incredible fighting chess, but he stopped doing exactly that in the last round. I think he expected Fabi to convert his chances so he didn't take chances against Gukesh. Because if he had lost, Fabi would never qualify

      There is no "gone all out" in chess at that level. The only thing you can do to win is to take advantage of the opponents mistakes. If there is no mistake by your opponent, you are not going to win. Chess at this level is opportunistic, if there is no opportunity, no one can do anything.

    This is the most competitive age of chess, any of these players would be world chess champions in any other time period. Most of them (the older players) will be replaced by a newer generation in 5-10 years which is heart wrenching.
