- We're moving to the inside of the van this week! Cargo van's are noisy, so to do our conversion the right way, we need to take every step possible to make traveling in this thing comfortable, and quiet! We'll install sound deadening to our living space inside the van and do some rough testing to see if it makes a noticeable difference!

Remember kids, decibels is a logarithmic scale. 60db is twice as loud as 50db, so a 5db drop is actually bigger than what what you think.
I didnt know that, thanks
@@ChuyR. 60 is normal conversation, car horns from 15 feet away are 100, being near police sirens are 120, shotguns are 130. Going the other way, your fridge is 40, leaves rustling is 20.
good info! thanks
Came here to say this!
You better keep the roller skating janitor - it is something special
The back doors are going to get replaced, so I may need to re-design a new sticker for it...
@@TheShredist it’s all good 😂 it’s your van do whatever you want with it! (Try to stay sane during COVID)!
I appreciated the little air freshener blowing off the mirror
What everyone should have in his mind: every 10 DB is Double for your ear(40db is Double of 30db, 50is Double of 40...)
Are you going to do the floor? A lot of noise transmission is through the floor of a vehicle. You only have to look at now much sound deadening material is stuck to the floor of a modern car and the carpet backing material on BMW’s and Audi’s is about an inch thick! If you want to make it quieter get the trim off in the front and do the floor, doors and bulkhead to stop engine noise coming through into the vehicle. It’s a pain in the butt to do but makes a massive difference when it’s done. 🙉
I was planning on insulating the floor so fingers crossed the helps with the ground noise!
It’s also worth going under the bonnet as well if you have any left over.
Ah man have I been looking for Astro van before and after DB readings - THANK YOU for sharing.
My van jumps from 35 (inside quite garage) - 55 DB (idle) - so a lot of engine noise - these Astros dont come with noise or heat reduction hoodliners so that might make a big difference too (easier than strpping front and doing firewall / doghouse etc, at least for quick win).
There is a difference between sound deadening (vibration of panels) and sound absorption (echo bouncing around the van cavity). Insulation should help (unless you cover it with another panel that bounces rather than absorbs the sound). Will be amazing if you could rerun your DB tests after insulation before covering it with a panel.
Thanks once again - awesome videos!
Scruffy is the unintentional fan fav of the channel
This topic is such a rabbit hole. There are a ton of products out there by second skin to cover every little spot in your van, but you'll either go broke or insane trying to silence every sound.
Looking forward to the next video!
My thoughts exactly. I just wanted some of the "boominess" taken out, which this cheap stuff did pretty well. Its cheap comparatively, so it's perfect for my little rattle trap.
Big, big difference between sound deadening and sound proofing. Sound deadening (which is what's happening here) makes a huge difference in the low, rumbly frequencies. The insulation will abate most of the higher frequency noise. Of course in order to actually soundproof a vehicle it takes a little more oomph, MLV is the answer there but it's exxxpennnnssssiiiive. I had a 600hp hotrod recently that I did the whole works on and it was a crypt-quiet 54db inside at full throttle but it cost over a grand to get it that quiet. You'll get pretty amazing results for the van at a fraction of the expense when the goal isn't trying to turn a vehicle into an anechoic chamber. LOL.
You're totally right MLV would do a much better job, But 75 bucks for some mediocre noise reduction is exactly what this van deserves lol
Tire/ road noise, wind noise, engine noise. Consider where each is comming into the van. Sometimes, you just need to do the floor. The new windshield may help too. The app on your phone may be able to tell you the frequency of the loudest noises so you can better target that problem. In my van, I did the front fenders, floor and engine cover first.....huge difference although I didn't meter it.
The floor is a tremendous source of noise too. Adding a vinyl floor of some sort will help a lot. Acoustic noise abatement is about the sum equaling more than the parts. Think about how much noise an open window lets in... Skip 1 step and the rest is seemingly ineffective.
More coverage on the firewall, and up in the cab area would help more.
I don't know how far along you are but most driving noise above 30 mph is actual coming from under the vehicle (or vehicle floor). For a bit more of a drop in Db doing the 30% method on the floor is recommend with the type of panel you used. But I would do something like Al's Liners HNR which is a fluid applied heat and noise reducer that can be rolled on and for about 99 bucks it does a whole truck floor panel, outer door skins, and rear panel wall. I use it a ton for building out sound systems in trucks on their floor boards, rear cab wall, and on the inside of the outer door skin as those are the largest single piece of metal area on a truck next to a solid roof skin.
Those are un bodies. They pick up road noise bad. One thing I did that make more difference than anything, replace all the suspension rubber bushings and the motor mounts, transmission mount, if you haven't already
Not in a van but a Subaru WRX, and definitely gonna do this for when I'm able to go road tripping again.
I've heard it helps with the subie rumble 👍
Awesome vid! If you held the phone app in your other hand you would have noticed a significant improvement, The mic was in the noisiest place beside a door that you likely didn't add the deadener to and a window. We just purchased a VW bus and will be doing this soon
This was quite helpful for me. I was considering a project but did not understand the type of benefit sound mats did.
Thanks.
36 s ft. 1 bulk pack from dynamat . In car audio. You are still way light on effective sound control.
If you want to do it properly. All surfaces should be covered.
I used over 150 Sq ft in 00 Monte Carlo to get proper sound deadening. But that's just me. Good job on the van
Sounds deadening is such a game changer. Keep on with the great van build!
You could fill the inside of the support frameworks with spray foam.
If you do something in the doors or by engine and floor that will make it so much quieter but looks like it worked pretty well and cool to see you build this van
What about adding some sound deadening material on the lower strips on the floor. Sound does travel through the floor too, right? By putting some on the lower parts divets, might also help.
Hey man. One suggestion: cut an access panel in the floor for the inevitable fuel pump replacement before you put the flooring in. Instructions on the AstroSafari user website.
If I remember correctly, mass loaded vinyl (MLV) is much better for sound deadening. Just mentioning for future reference 👍🏻
This stuff is MLV
As a fellow drummer I can say... love the drum comparisons!
This series is so helpful and inspirational. Your dialogue is informative, concise and captivating. Mad props, my dude 🙌🏼
Thanks! I have an awesome part 4 coming very soon!
even the tedious stuff is interesting , so yeah am invested in this build . Keep at it bro .....
Thanks to you I just recently bought an Astro van. It’s not quite as rad as yours but I sure am stoked to be mobbing around in an awd beast of a vehicle now. Taking notes throughout your series. Let the projects begin!
Following intently, please post more soon!
And it'll make all your subwoofers sound dope! More seriously, I'm curious if you have heater/furnace plans. That can go a long way to adding comfort.
Shoutout from Boise.
You should do a full run through of your trail, ps great vid
love the real would testing... i bet if you cover way less of the top and side panels it would be a marginal difference. i bet a lot of noise is coming from the floor boards and dog house. thats just my guess though. that insulation isn't no cheap task though hahah
You've got to use kill mat on the floor full solid floor sheet will help out a lot
This is a great series, as I'm going to be upsizing to a bigger van by spring!
Supposedly the thinsulate will also have a similar sound deaden as those mats. I haven't done a direct comparison. So no real reference.
I have a Ford transit and went sparingly with the stickon and covered most everywhere else with 3 inch thinsulate. So far it is slightly less noisy.
It's easy to get to a point where wind noise is the loudest (got there on my Subaru and now there on the Transit).
Main hope is that it's less noisy inside when it rains.
It's supposed to be snowing this wednesday (in couer d'Alene) so can you show us how to build a wood kicker ramp?
Great vid and great info let’s see more van builds!!!
I saw that Tama floor Tom
Looking forward to more videos this is great! Thank you.
wow man that is lookin good!!! cheap up the good work
Drummer, guitarist and van-converting mountain biker too? Cool :)
Awesome job, looking to do the same. Are you planning to put a bed an storage space?
Sick bro
Awesome 👍😎🇬🇧
What insulation did you go with? How did that affect the noise. Wonder if adding it to the floor would make a bigger impact
SECRET TIP! Sound deadening that you can buy for cars is very expensive! Or you can buy rolls of roof flashing from Home Depot for a fraction of the cost! I use it all the time a whole roll of flashing is $12. If you got the same amount of sound deadening from the auto parts store it would cost you probably hundreds!
Hey brother
After getting the flooring done , that may help with lowering the decibels even more . What type of insulation are you going to use ?
Purple Power is the truth!
The van has insulation now does that mean there are some skiing videos coming?
Cool video
and the firewall
Won't it get loads quieter when you add the insulation as well? Love the vids man
Definitely, I was just curious at the difference this stuff made 👍
Again, excellent video production/storytelling! But as to the rehabilitation or repurpose of this van, may I suggest let entropy thermalize it away. This thing that our industrial revolution produced may not be worth saving. But from your prospective love conquers all. Touché.
Does the sound matting have a roofing tar smell? I used some of the cheaper stuff in a speaker install years ago and the car reeked of roofing tar every time it got hot for quite a while.
Anybody that wrenches AND plays drums cannot be all bad.
Would love to see you play guitar some time on your channel- sounds like you probably shred more than just bikes!
I want to see u play the drums
love the vid
Reminder, decibels are on a logarithmic scale, three decibels are a factor of ten in noise.
When will u add the next feature to the trail?
Doing the floor would have yielded big numbers
Finally!
Are you a drummer? Plz do a drumming video!!
I'm not lol, I'm a guitarist like everyone else 😂
Красавец. Я тоже купил Астру 1995
You should watch sayer Danforths CZcams videos about his astro van
I live on canfield by packsaddle
Where did you get the black gmc logo for the front grill???
Stock logo with black gloss vinyl 👍
@@TheShredist thanks.....just got.my hands on an 05 with 34k
@@jackl9041 dang! That's an amazing find! Congrats on that! lol
@@TheShredist thanks it was a church van....doing a 3in lift and the 4x4 conversion
Subaru owners just know
Can you fit your dirt bike in your van???
If you tried hard enough lol. I plan on getting a hitch mounted carrier for it
How many miles does the van have
I thought the shredist was dead
I only took one holiday week off 😁
36 sqft is not near enough if your going to do that do it all inside the doors and everywhere
First
The 3 people who disliked this own Ford Aerostars.....losers
You didn't do the floor. That's why it didn't work
You bought the wrong kind. 50 mil is kind of a waste. IF you really wanted to make it quiet second skin 3 in one is super good or Skyhighcaraudio 3.1 deadner is insane.
Noico. SMH. Kilmat. SMH. 2 of the worst CLD tiles you can use. While it sounds better, it likely won't last, especially if in a hot climate or have decent warm summers.
Had worked perfectly fine for me in the past 🤷♂️
@@TheShredist and it will for a little while, but both of those brands #1 have a lot of air contained in the butyl so they are not as effective as others. the whole reason cld tiles like these work is because they are dense, and a cheaper material with air bubbles in it aren't as effective for the money you spent. #2 they don't stand up to heat and will melt or start to peal away pretty quickly. this again lessens their effectiveness and also creates a mess when you need to clean it or redo it. this isn't just conjecture, this comes from test done comparing like a dozen brands. just fyi.
those apps are highly inaccurate btw.. coming from an audio enthusiast
