  • A melancholic song in yiddish, about a father giving away all hes three daughters in marriage.. Written by the late Mordechai Gebirtig, and the sung by the great Bente Kahan.
All the pictures are from the US holocaust memorial museum!
    Translation;
    1.
When, with good luck, there arrives the day
When I marry off my youngest daughter,
    I will dance and dance
A burden has been taken off my mind-
My eldest daughter is getting married
I have two more maiden daughters waiting for their turn to
    be married
You bandsmen, tear at your strings!
    Let everyone rejoice with us.
    My joy is so great.
Only the good God can understand how great it is,
And so can those who have also given away their daughters
    in marriage
    2.
When I see my second daughter getting married in her white
    wedding dress,
I will drink wine with joy -
What a burden off my shoulder!
You bandsmen - tear at yours strings!
My second daughter is getting married.
Now it is only my youngest one who remains in the house
I wish she would be married soon, too
Play, bandsmen play for our in-laws!
Let all poor folk share our happiness
We are having our child settled down to married life
And this child is a daughter, too
    3.
Now the sounds of a third wedding are dying away
And this makes me sad and thoughtful
    My youngest daughter is gone
What else is there for me to be living for?
You bandsmen, play for the bride.
All three daughters have now been given away in marriage
All our children have left us
It was hard for us to bring them up,
And without them life is even harder
    Go on playing.
    Let my tears run down.
Today, the last bed will be deserted
    Their room will be empty
    And so will their wardrobe
Oh, how desolate the life is now.

    Dear sento.,
Poland may not be like it was once, neither also is Miami; now a days in Siemianowice there are still magnificent forests and trees and beautiful birds including koo-koo birds; the vegetables are very delicious -served in the many lovely restaurants and the local people are so very friendly and welcoming and very mindful of the world outside Poland.
    .
    Nothing like Miami.
    .
    cheers.

I don't recognize this song. It is indeed touching and beautiful. I recall a different song, upbeat and joyful, about marrying off the youngest daughter (the mezinke, which word appears also in this song, 3rd stanza)). I learned it from a Bikel album. Haven't found his version on CZcams, but there are others: "Di Mezinke Oisgegeben" = "the youngest daughter has been given in marriage." I think the literal meaning of mezinke is the little finger (pinkie).

Jews: the only people who, when conditions get bad enough that anyone else would make light diversions, make their songs even more depressing. We really are one of a kind.

This is a wonderful and moving Yiddish song, written and composed by the talented Mordkhe Gebirtik. Unfortunately, the singer has no conception of how Yiddish is and should be pronounced. Her pronunciation is not uniform and is marred by a foreign accent. She also does not know how to interpret and put over a Yiddish song. It's the Yiddish spirit and flavor that are missing. A IDISHE LID IZ MEN MEKHUYEV TSU ZINGEN ON GRAIZN UN OISTSUTAITSHN AF A IDISHLEKHN EYFN. Why isn't the Yiddish text presented in Yiddish characters? ME TOR NIT FARSHEMEN DI DEYRESDIKE IDISHE EYSIES. This is the opinion of a (Yiddish) linguist.

+René Dupont I found the lyrics in hebrew letters. The problem here is the alignment to left-side:

It was a mistake to to go to Palestine. You should have been better off in Bavaria, and had dispersed the Bavarian throughout Germany which is what happened to the Germans from Poland a Checkosovakia. A Jewish country in the European heartland would have been better than the Hell hole of the Middle East. Bavarians could have gone to Argentina or Brazil or Chile or Venezuela. even the US or Canada..Plenty of room there.

Palestinians started it, they made their own mess. They thought they could drive the jewish people away from their own land, but Israel fought back. I feel empathy for the innocent children who have to suffer for their stupid and violent actions of their moronic, brainwashed, violent parents.
