The tango Rebeka was perhaps Polish Jewish composer Zygmunt Białostocki's most beloved and often-recorded song. It's said that people requested it so often at the nightclubs, they would request it a second time while it was still playing the first time! Bialostocki used snatches of familiar chasidic niggunim (melodies) to tell the story of a poor Jewish shopkeeper's assistant who falls in love with a handsome goy when he comes to buy newspapers and dreams of a better life with him...
In Yiddish version, which maybe was sung by Tadeusz Faliszewski, Rivkele is rejecting the love of polish nobleman, because of her attachment to Jewish tradition - Hudba
I remember when I was about eight, my grandfather listening to Jewish music on the radio, wiping away a tear and looking up to the ceiling and pleading, 'git mir mein velt tsurik.' (Give me back my world.")

@Edna Turner That's odd. I also knew a viennese lady and my yiddish speaking grandmother. It was easy for me to navigate between the two. And there were dozens of similar words.
@@SuperHartline it's not that odd afaik. Yiddish in the more western communities was closer to German than the Yiddish of the more eastern communities, which had a higher influence of Slavic languages. I understand some Yiddish speakers. And some I just don't... 🤷🏻♀️
@Edna Turner It is similar. It started as a dialect from German. It was created by Jewish people who lived in the Holy Roman Empire and were they lived in their ghettos (original sense not the modern sense). There they kinda mixed Hebrew with German.
It's not always easy to understand it though. German alone isn't enough to understand Yiddish fluently (also given that it didn't undergo the same linguistic developments as German did). A lot of commonly used phrases in German do originate from Yiddish though.
And then there is eastern Yiddish which is basically Yiddish mixed with Russian/Polish/Ukrainian (depending on the situation where they live).
I am from Lviv, currently live in the United States, I love this tango. Before the war, Lviv/Lwow/Lemberg was the city of 3 cultures. My grandma was fluent in Ukrainian and Polish, knew few words in Yiddish, did not speak Russian. She was sad sharing her nice memories about those good times of her youth before the war. I am Ukrainian but I consider Yiddish culture as an innate part of my Galicia, part that disappeared in the fire of Treblinka and Majdanek.

My wife is from Vinnitsya Ukraine. Her cousins live in Lviv just north of Kaiserwald District. Everyone in the family are alive and well so far. I was in Ukraine for a month July 2019. We celebrated my birthday there the same day that Zelenskyy

habla de una chica judia que se enamora de un noble polaco, y como su familia sufre que ella se vaya a convertir. Es la contraparte en Yiddish de la misma cancion Rebecca pero en polaco, donde el protagonista es el noble, entonces terminan los dos temas complementandose para crear la hisotria desde las dos perspectivas, cada una en su idioma.

@@rodrigosevero2504 y es q al ser un dialecto germano antiguo, tiene similitudes con el alemán, y entonces a su vez con algunas palabras en inglés. Por ejemplo hogar es heym que suena parecido a home en inglés, misma raiz

I am Polish...but we always loved Yiddish culture and songs...Jews were a big and valuable part of our nation and country for so long! Love to all of you from Canada!

Why are you differentiating between Jews and Poles? Could you not simply say "Polish Jews" or "Jewish Poles"? Can you explain why you cant think that way? (I'm glad some Poles loved Yiddish culture and songs. There were Poles who hid Jews and saved their lives at the risk of their own lives but, in spite of this, Yiddish culture has been decimated. You might not be aware of the flowering of Yiddish literature and culture in Europe..... That loss (like all losses from genocide) is so so sad.....

Żydzi w Polsce byli Polakami i tworzyli grupę/klasę społeczną. Przez kilkaset lat w Polsce żyło 80% całej populacji światowej.
W Izraelu od 70 lat żyje zaledwie 50% populacji światowej żydów. Najbardziej znaną oryginalną wersją jest wersja w wykonaniu Ewy Demarczyk

@@y.k.9705 Моего деда, уже солдата Красной Армии, еврея Меера Абрамовича, сдали полицаям соседи в городе Полтаве (Украина) , в 1941 году осенью . Он пробрался к родственникам, чтобы узнать, успели ли они эвакуироваться. После войны, в 1946-47 годах выжившие тёти ездили искали его следы - т.к. пришло уведомление, что пропал без вести. Нашли свидетелей расстрела.
Румыны били наших родных как курей в загоне!
А сейчас мои родные бегут от войны в Румынию!!!

Je m'appelle Brigitte BAYETTE, j'habite en Nouvelle Calédonie. Ma maman s'appelait Héléne PODOROWSKI (nom de naissance), elle était Hashkenaz et parler Yidish. Mes grands parents maternels étaient Marguerite LACHTER et Jules PODOROWSKI en arrivant à Paris en 1917 ma grand-mére était chapeliére (elle faisait des chapeaux) et mon grand pere était chauffeur de taxi, le soir il jouait du violon dans les restaurants russes. Que Dieu les garde, Paix à leur ame.

I'm from Germany and my wife is israeli. She learned my language very well...and when she got in touch with yiddish, she called it "the romantic version of german". I think that we are now both going to learn this language ;)

Jews like my Dad were not allowed into medical schools in the US because of the Jewish quota-one of America's Hall of Shame. Many Jews went to medical Schule in Deutschland because the language is the same. My father studied in Bonn, de. when hitler got in, luckily the american Jewish students knew they had to go and got to Switzerland. He finished in Bern, ch. Yiddish just uses the Hebrew alphabet but it can use the English alphabet. There may be a few words here and there that are the same as Polish. If your wife speaks deutsch, she can speak Yiddish. And you can speak Yiddish too. the accent does not sound like hoch Deutsch but...it's nice you both have an interest to keep this language alive. P.S. I wish people know hat the heck happened in the US with Father Coughlin-anti-Semite extraordinaire, the Jewish quota and Jewish RESTRICTIONS in hotels, doctors getting privileges in hospitals etc. And 990 Jews were not allowed entry fleeing nazi Europe. HMS St. Louis. they were off the coast of Florida. I cannot tell you what my Dad went through-going back to fight in WWII and on the front because he spoke fluent Deutsch. He told me never to forget the anti-Semitism in the US. And look at this today. I have battled anti-Semitism my whole life in the US. I did not grow up in a Jewish community. And no, I am not giving hitler a pass.You weren't even born. Shame on this person.

Nice! Ewa Demarczyk's cover is so monumental I could never imagined anybody else doing this song. But this version is really nice - done more like real tango danceable cabaret number - where Demarczyk went for dramatic interpretation. I need to check out Olga Avigail-Mieleszczuk and her band for more tunes. Thanks for posting it!
