- Marvel and DC are determined to out cringe each other as comic shops are closing around the world. Making FOOLS of themselves and the 'industry.' Another Disney Marvel employee displays how thin-skinned they are and lashes out at a paying customer and half the earth's population. Hot off the heals of Marvel's The New warriors and Children of the Atom we get Gotham High from DC comics. A not new, not fresh take on Batman. In the meantime DC plans to abandon shops as another Marvel 'creative' stirs it up with potential paying customers online. Additionally we did hear from Jim Lee and Joe Quesada is coming to CZcams?

Problem is that it's too futuristic for a Gossip Girls/Rich Crazy Asians "spin". The bulk of girls are turned off by science fiction. They want their melodrama to mainly be in contemporary settings.

You're right, but to make it a bit less simple I also think it has something to do with the nature of being political in that way. People 'identify' in different ways. Most here probably identify by their entertainment, some identify by their culture, their work, their passion and so on. Whatever someone dictates their life too and motivates them, that is a major part of their identity. But the problem with those who identify as social movements, and I mean ALL social movements, right and left, is that they see everyone who isn't as dictated to their social movement as they are as unenlightened, ignorant, victims or aggressors. Their form of identity should be everyones identity. They see their social movement as a battle, anyone who isn't on their side has to be defeated and everyone who doesn't praise all of their actions and beliefs is an enemy. Because it isn't just people with that little amount of power who act like this. Even artists on tumblr can have this attitude. Even people expressing opinions in comments and tweets can have this attitude. Real artists have always lived by their art. It consumed them. But when you put your politics before the art, it no longer becomes art but a long winded argument. It isn't written to entertain or inspire, it's written to attack their enemies.

There's maintaining relevance and there's reinvention. Fantastic Four honestly hadn't felt relevant since the 70s maybe 80s. By the 90s they felt like some brady bunch family that was stuck in the 60s.

Back in the 90's, contracts from Marvel and DC had clauses stating that if your book sold under a certain amount of copies (around 27,000) you would be fired. If your book sold *over* a certain amount, your royalty would increase. This is what we used to refer to as "incentive".

I don't know about that... I would probably consider myself pretty feminist. You can believe strongly in a lot of woman's issues and still say, "lady, why are you doing this?" It's pretty easy to see fans are really getting riled up about this. On paper, the idea of trying out a gender/culture switch of a character could be interesting; in practice, right now, fans are just going to be furious with it on principle.
A good writer could do interesting things with a Chinese batman, maybe (I am really not seeing why that's such a great concept)... But fans are just not going to want to read it right now.

MArvel and DC going under is a good thing in my book. They have been churning the same predictable crap for decades. People moan about remakes in film, but comics have been doing the same for longer.

I have never been so annoyed and frustrated in my life!!! I really feel for the comic shop employees especially for my friends who had to close their store down.
Interesting that someone who's about as closely related to the original creator of a character as I am thinks her opinion on ownership of the character matters.
At least when a buddy and I were waiting Marvel short story fan fics in the mid to late 80's, we created our own characters in their own settings. We did use some similar powersets of existing characters, but they were their own people who just happened to exist in the Marvel Universe and never interacted with established Marvel characters.
It saddens me to think that guys like Joe, who did great work in the past, seem to have embraced this insane position of throwing their own company to the wolves so as to push an SJW agenda that is just as, if not more so, toxic as they accuse the fans of being.
It's not only extremely disrespectful of paying customers, but it's also disrespectful to guys like Stan Lee and the original creators. The same goes for DC. It just boggles my mind to see both companies seemingly going out of their way to piss of their fanbase.
Why do these writers and directors keep going after fans of properties that they themselves are writing and directing for? Seems a bit contradictory to me.

Honest question; (and I am not a fan of what I have read about this project) How is this different to what Denny O'Neill and Neal Adams did to Green Lantern and Green Arrow for Hard Traveling Heroes? I know they didn't change their race, but they essentially changed their personalities to suit their political agenda for the story they wanted to tell.

Citing changes from 50 years ago is a false equivalency. There was little to no characterization in superhero comics before Fantastic Four #1.
We've had generations of fans since who think of these characters as more than cardboard cutouts. That's because of all the great writers and artists who followed in the wake of Lee and Kirby...and why we react with such scorn to people like this who are ignorant of their work.
@@Monkees4Evah - I don't think it's a false equivalency, even adding a personality is still changing a character, and FF 1 was more than a decade before the HTH run.
It's true we have loved these, and other characters for decades (I'm in my fifth decade of reading comics) but there have always been runs and creators that have fallen flat, my memory of the original New Warriors run was that it was rubbish, and there loads of complaints, and it gradually got better as Marvel stuck with it. Other runs of characters that we think of as classic or much loved couldn't sell enough to keep their own title (Blue Beetle lasted only a couple of years in the 80s - although I would bet that that books sales figures even at cancellation would make the writers of America Chavez drool).
There seems to be a surfeit of terrible sounding ideas around at the moment, doesn't there? The SJW twins over at Marvel, 90210 Batman at DC - it feels like the big two are desperately trying to capture an audience that they have priced out of the market, rather than court the audience they currently have with good stories and trust that the writing and art will be good enough to bring the new readers in.
I think as fans we can be stuck in our ways, we like what we like, but good creators (and I am not necessarily including the people responsible for the above book) always bring something new to the table, something we wouldn't have thought we'd like, often something we initially don't like and, through good storytelling, win us over. Fans lost their shit when they killed off Ultimate Peter Parker and introduced Miles Morales, and that character may not be to your taste, but it is undeniable that he has become a much loved and profitable character for Marvel. The New Warriors video has something like 118 thousand dislikes, more by now I'm sure, and I have to say that I think the character design looks terrible, and the little I know of the team sounds pretty bad, but no-one has read even a single page of that book yet, and people are saying that they don't like it, this is bonkers. It certainly looks like its going to be weak, and I don't hold out much hope for being convinced otherwise, but I can't say I don't like a book I haven't read. Although I'll happily rag on them for making a Dora the Explorer knock off and hoping no one would notice...

@@verngriffiths5933 If you've been reading comics for that long, you know it took a long time for Marvel style characterization to hit DC. I don't think it happened until DC fired most of their stable of writers after they asked for medical insurance in 1968, forcing them to hire younger writers who were influenced by Stan Lee.
Also, did GL/GA change Hal and Ollie's "personalities" up until that point? I don't think so. It didn't contradict anything we knew about Hal. Ollie's personality changed because of losing his fortune in Denny's JLA run, which I found believable.

Well... not just the comic shops for me the whole industry is dead. What happened to just writing characters weather a comic, novel or film. A good character is a good character I don't care what color they are or who they screw at night. Apparently checking SJW boxes is more important to writers anymore than character development. It's like revisionist history for entertainment. It isn't customer gatekeeping. I used to race home to catch batman the animated series as a school kid I loved harly and the REAL joker not the Jared letto joke. Not the new caricature. I havnt been to a movie in years I will not pay to be insulted. I won't pay to be lectured by SJWs and news flash comic makers this is coming from a gay guy who bought comics for 20 years. My small little town use to have 2 comic shops up until 2017. 1 close at the end of 2017 becasue the owner was too old to keep it going. The other is closed now because of the caronavirus and will not reopen. But he was planning of closing his store anyway at the end of July becasue he said no one is buying anymore. I recommended him to sell manga, but he said it was too late. He just can't afford it anymore.

Great job with this video. When I was a kid, I had an ambition to become a comic shop owner. I'm glad I let that one slide. Who'd be a comic store owner now? I've known several comic shop owners here in the UK over the years and every single one of them has had serious problems with Diamond that have threatened their livelihoods. This current crisis is going to annihilate the industry.

I remember, back in school, my teacher would tell us to write a short story. I'd ask, or someone would ask, what to write to about. Teacher would say anything. So, the other students and I, whatever, would sit down and write the short story and turn it into the assignment bin. The teacher would go ahead; grade and critique this short story we fished out of our imagination. Then proceed dock points on misspelling, effort, creativity, inconsistency, irrelevance, obvious copying from another source/person(ya'know plagiarism), etc, etc... What happened in society? This chick was looking forward to making hella bank, openly stating where she took her ideas. When it comes to writing, if your taking something from [insert title/source]. You are following that formula. Irregardless of what you may think. That format is set, you are going to follow that.

One of my best friends ever, Dave Luebke, who ran Dave's Comics in Richmond, VA for over 30 years. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago, but even though I haven't collected comics seriously in almost 30 years, I still have a great fondness for comics shops. This is sad, sad news.
Thankfully, we still have a capitalist economic system (at least partially). We can vote with our dollars. Those companies which we don't support won't get our hard earned dollars. Those who don't provide a product that we the consumers don't want, will fail. Those who do, will prosper, and will replace those who don't.

When did company bosses start letting there employees insult there customers. It might be the end of comics and im sad for that, but how can i say this? STOP FUCKING BUYING THEM. I was told a long time ago thatthe only way to hurt these companies is to hit them in the wallett. Show them that there is not a market for there crap, reread the older comics from the day when they gave a crap. There are plenty of other smaller publishers out there to try.
I stopped buying comics regularly back in the late nineties when the X-Men writers (forget their names, but they were douches) killed off Psylocke because they said she was a dumb character in an interview, and then killed Colossus, another of my favorites. I'm glad I'm not invested, financially or emotionally, in what happens in the comics anymore.
In Iowa, I've seen bookstores and comic stores start disappearing five years ago. I'm a writer and notice one of the biggest problems is at the distribution level.
