ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES EVER.....PERIOD Following the enjoyment of our last Anime Movie (YOUR NAME) Will, Sam and Adam experience #ASilentVoice #KoenoKatachi #TheShapeofVoice
As someone who has struggled with anxiety for a relatively large portion of my life this movie holds a special place in my heart. It comes the closest to portraying that emotion that I've seen within entertainment - and the story is just beautifully done. It just feels so real. So many great messages and a movie that you can never re-watch too many times. Thanks for the reaction.
The girl is deaf but it's the boy who refused to listen. At first I thought this movie was about the deaf girl Shoko but this is a story of the bully Ishida who finds his shape of voice again.
I got the manga - so I did not figure this out until a lot later - but (the "two shows" Sho-ko Sho-yah) he liked her right off, the girl who sat beside him knew it right away - but he just communicated through rough housing and mocking like he did with his friends. He wanted to learn signing in the class (he was looking at his hands imagining using them), but "the group" tossed that aside and he was trying to learn by watching others - who all seemed to be getting annoyed. He kept being drawn to her because he wanted to understand her; but ended up frustrated and wanting her to solve the communication problem as it was the center of him understanding or relating to the world (growing up). The end in the book is her realizing he had sought her out because he was planning to do exactly what she did and she dreams of HIS desk being empty. Oh - his suicide plan got cancelled when he accidentally asked to be her friend - he did not expect that or know why; his original plan was to just apologize and convince himself she was "just fine". All the character are personality types (arguably); lastly it hit on how "we all" have been like those kids and maybe just got lucky at not being called out; and likewise have been bullied.
the x is very accurate to how social anxiety works, it's exactly how i saw people. i couldnt recognise faces or names of people in my class (even after spending months of being in the same class) and school cuz i was used to avoiding eyecontact and couldnt create connections with people in my class, luckily i had friends but i was only able to talk to my friends. so everyone didnt feel like classmates or even acquaintances but complete strangers even tho i was with them for hours each day. but yea the x's hit sooo hard when i first saw this cuz it was the first time i saw smthn that symbolised social anxiety so well so the ending made me sob like crazy cuz it was so relatable. when my social anxiety got better it was exactly like that feeling, strangers and random people werent so scary
The X's are a genius way to represent things like anxiety and depression. Your mind is so busy making up all kinds of scenarios of people looking at you a certain way and talking about you a certain way that you close yourself off completely.
Honestly I think the best thing about the movie is that it tries really hard not to have the generic good character/ bad character thing…even down to Shoya’s old friends pulling him out of the water after he fell in… the director once said that she didn’t wanna play God because it wasn’t her place…. She just presented you with the characters with as much nuance as she was could …yes this particular movie is about Shoya and his “redemption” ( more like his journey to learning how to love himself and also learning how to forge emotional connections in a healthy way) but it could have just as easily been about Ueno you know…we could just as easily be watching her redemption, it’s just not her story. The movie goes out of its way to show us that no one is completely bad but also no one is completely good( even Shoko, who is the most innocent beautiful character has a hard time seeing outside of herself to know how her actions affect those who love her)… everyone has flaws but your flaws don’t make you less human or less worthy of love… the goal is just to let yourself be loved and be the best version of you that you can be
i used to have a similar anxiety and depression like this guy. i used to unfriend and block and push people away, i guess the X is a great way to convey that.
A movie that's not about redemption but, about self forgiveness. Man this film was on another level definitely a film everybody has to watch at least once in their lives.
If you pay attention closely you'll notice that fireworks interrupted Shoyo's suicide day dream, and fire works was also present for Shoko's own attempt. Just stood out to me pretty strongly.
Probably one of the best movies of all time, let's not forget this was rejected for Oscars and boss baby was chosen instead of this

I like that this movie shows how kids can be really mean even without a tragic backstory

What frustrates me about the other kids is that they all bullied her in some way but they all blamed him because his was the most obvious
I recommend reading the manga for A Silent Voice because the movie cut out a lot of info from the side characters which is actually important.
"I don't condone hitting but man if there was a time I would want to hurt someone with a fist punch" that's how we all felt 😂

This movie is so good. Gotta fight tears during some scenes
