Greetings from California. That's it for me... After discovering Delain and Xandria, I am officially giving up 100% on American heavy metal, which has become absolutely horrendous. Delain creates music from the soul, and the passion and emotion Charlotte gets across with her image, facial expression and singing proves what REAL music talent is. Listening to Human Contradiction and some other albums by this generation of European bands gives me the same feeling when I heard classic metal albums in the '80s for the first time. Unfortunately, the USA has gone down the drain with musical talent, so thank god we have Delain, Xandria, Nightwish, Within Temptation and some other amazing European bands now. Charlotte and band, you just earned a fan for life!

I like the rest you mentioned but am not digging this girl's voice in Delain. I like the music but just not her voice. I just discovered Xandria though and OMG they so rock! Her voice is amazing!
I gave a solid listen to the bands you mentioned and like a song here and there... but Nightwish is so consistently awesome that it would be far easier to name the songs I DON'T like from them. They are truly unique in composition and scoring. I wish there were more bands as distinctive and solid (except for H2N which I ignore as it is awful... but with Marko gone now, they aren't really Nightwish anymore). I'm sad I came across them so late... and will only see them live in videos... sigh. Peace.
Yeah, USA got fish-hooked on musical gimmicks and cheapness while European rock and metal just kept evolving, refining and perfecting the entire time. Listening to “The Human Contradiction” is like listening to late 80s/ early 90s American rock but if their standards were set so high that even early 50s rockers would be going “yeah, this band is definitely talented enough to record”. I get excited about “The Human Contradiction” like I get all up-in-arms about “Tropico” by Pat Benatar. (By the way, Benatar & Giraldo actually kept on rocking, unlike many of their American peers - though there were a few who did stay true to their music). I enjoy how the lyrics are poetically provocative and about as blunt as possible, tackling touchy subject matter with brutal honesty. I also enjoy how Charlotte sings with vocal techniques involving things like slow, hard vibrato, loud belting and full sonorous high notes. Only advanced singers sing that well - but mostly I think it’s natural talent making these techniques more natural. And the very same awesomeness can be said for all of the musicians - emotional guitar tones, extremely monstrous bass, school-bus-driver-timed-precision-drumming. And the special guests help make “The Human Contradiction” an epic masterpiece. I also enjoy Xandria, Sirenia, UnSun, Within Temptation, Immortal, Cradle Of Filth, Nightwish, Arch Enemy, and Oversense, among others! For those bands I left out, they are the others! Just as much of a compliment for them as any great band & a testament to my faulty memory and limited time. The others have been heard.

The thing I love the most about Delain is how they bring Charlotte's delicate voice to the front. I'm a big fan of female singers and I've got to say, I haven't heard anything like her. She's not trying to sound opera or gothic, she's not trying to imitate anyone. She just sings in her own unique and gorgeous voice. The instruments are not exactly on the complicated side, but then, that way, they don't overpower Charlotte's light voice too much. The music is simple, but it is catchy. It is extremely catchy. It feels like well-thought simplicity and it's really soothing.

Yes, sometimes there is power in simplicity as well. It would be nice if they would give Timo a chance to show his talent more, if you check his CZcams-page the guy is a really talented guitarplayer.
And the same with Charlotte. I kind of got weary of that classical scene and I find it refreshing that there are singers who sing with their normal voices. She's not the most talented singer for sure, but her timbre and those little nuances are beautiful. And she also sings with her heart. Songs like Scarlet are really emotional singing and in a way I enjoy this kind of aprroach more than the classical one, which is mostly focusing on the technical side.
If you like this kind, check Anneke van Giersbergen as well, Charlotte kind of reminds me of her.

Don't be fooled by a singers choice of vocal style, she is very influenced by jazz which makes her use her voice in the way that she does. Her belting is insane, have you heard it?

Delain were badarse last night. I even got to hang out & chat with Charlotte & Sander. I was so nervous about meeting her, but she was so kind & gracious. She was so humble, I could see it in her face that she was happy at my enthusiasm toward Delain's music.
I hope they come back as a headliner at some point, as a support their setlist isn't that long.
Was telling Sander about how I thought this was a really cool video & how it reminded me of the video of Maniac Lord. I don't think he could understand my accent though.

@@thesexyskywalker3283 I heard he wanted Delain to stop doing tours and make changes or something and the others disagreed so they left and he was going to make Delain a solo project again (pretty much make it what it was before Charlotte became the lead singer). But obviously he changed his mind because he hired a new singer and pretty sure they are doing concerts and stuff still. Whatever the reason for his decision, it’s a dumb one.
Delain has sure matured and progressed to a major presence in symphonic metal, Charlotte Wessels lead vocals caress my ears, soul and mind. The love affair never ends.
The “ooh ooh” part is such a lovely soothing break from the metal instrumentation, though I adore both.
Just saw Delain's at Slim's in SF; I am not a "metalhead" but I love symphonic metal. I'm classically trained and the song arrangements, orchestral scale of their songs, Charlotte's amazing voice which goes so well with the band's other instruments, and their incredible stage presence has made them my favorite symphonic metal band. I love Within Temptation and saw them, Kamelot, Battle Beast, and Sonata Arctica as well as the incredible Amorphis all in one month in SF. Delain had the best stage presence in my opinion with Kamelot a close second. They are also really nice people and we enjoyed meeting them before the show; very genuine and humble. Everyone loves music which appeals to them so I don't think there's much point criticizing a band for not being metal enough; thank god there is so much variety these days.
I have been following Delain now for several years and feel a special affinity for both them and WT since I'm Dutch but they keep getting better and better as a band and Charlotte's voice just keeps getting more amazing. I am so happy that there is so much variety in metal these days and that one can see folk metal like Eluveitie as well as pure symphonic metal like Nightwish and that there are also neoclassical bands like Stratovarius for those of us that love hard and driving, but appreciate technically skilled, classically influenced keyboardists doing solos like we see in many of these bands as well as the other instrumentalists. As a keyboardist, I am so grateful that they give me something to love and model in my own band music.
Thank-you Delain for the INCREDIBLE MUSIC and for inspiring me over and over in my own music!!

ACTUAL Symphonic metal, like Therion (founders of genre), Haggard or Epica, is dark and complex. Pop-Rock'y Metal like Delain and recent Within Temptation should not be called Symphonic metal. It lacks what gave the genre its name: a combination of Metal with Classical symphonic music.
Completely agreed with you Robin. Absolutely nothing symphonic about this song (Cannot talk about the band since I don't know anything else from them honestly). It sure is catchy but you forget about it quite soon for it drowns in mediocrity of today's commercial "metal" music.

Delain is one of the most talented bands out there. I'm completely addicted to "The Human Contradiction." While it is definitely one of the "pop-iest" metal bands, I am still very impressed with them. In my opinion, they are up there with Within Temptation!
Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica and Delain are the big 4 of Symphonic Metal and they’re all massively impressive in their own way

You just CAN'T compare this song to Xandria's Stardust. Have you listened well? Xandria is going more epic than ever. Can't judge on Delain, because I don't know the band and this song doesn't make me want to know more.

The third one is the only one that brought up my curiosity, but not for too long. I admit they have their own style, but it's just not mine at all. It's like a mix of things that already exist, with lots of talent however, whereas with Sacrificium, Xandria sounds like a new phoenix rising from Stardust.
Oh, and both singers are Dutch, but if you gave the slightest listen to Ex Libris, I suppose you can spot the level gap between them.
***** OK we all have individual tastes. I personally like Delain's style of mixing maybe a bit more traditional hardrock/heavymetal and this nowadays gothic/symphonic (what ever people want to call it) style together. To each one his own, like they say. And yes, Dianne van Giersbergen is one more talented Dutch female singer. I do know Ex Libris, too, and I like some of their songs. And in a way I wouldn't compare two singers with completely different styles to each other. I think the overall sound of Xandria (more powermetallish like Nightwish was back in a day) requires more dramatic singing, for this kind of music Charlotte's more intimate singing fits better. In my opinion of course.
Lol, I wasn't comparing them. I just thought the connections I made with the song title and record label were funny. I like both bands. You're right that Xandria's "Stardust" is way more epic, though. If you want an epic Delain song, look up "Control the Storm" or "Go Away." If it's a matter of you preferring the voice of a classically-trained opera singer, though, then yeah, you probably won't like this band.

is such an amazing dynamic.

But rarely do they work so well together.
Check them out live -- Charlotte is like Floor Jansen, the studio confines them too much, they're both far more incredible performing live.

mariehansler it's all good. To be honest it's kind of funny because I keep trying to find someone who became a fan in 2006 or 2007 so far no luck.
mariehansler i discovered them after a concert i had with Epica, where i had the chance to talk to Simone and she told me, she craves Charlotte and the Lady from Amberian Dawn ( sry forgot the name ). So i started to hear Delain with the Interlude ( The EP ). And i thought wow nice vocals, nice band. After then i discover Mr. Westerholt started this project, a former Member of Within Temptation. So after knewing this all musical genius unraveled. Since Late 2013 i'm a fan of Delain. Other Bands struggled a bit like Epica, or Within Temptation or Nightwish. But Delain and especially Charlotte never let me down. The Human Contradiction was a blast, but hey Moonbathers rotates and rotates in all my CD-Players or whatsoever again and again and again.... It's a pure Metal Relief.... Greets from Germany

I didn't like the "We are the others" album at all and I thought it might be an end of a great band. Now this is something better than "Lucidity"and in the range of "April rain". I can't wait to hear the rest of the album. Good job guys - and I don't mind mixing some pop stuff into the songs - it's that bit of unique sound.
I really recommend giving it another chance :) (to the ''We are the others'' album). Some albums need a bit more attention in order to be properly appreciated.
I personally love it, it has some great songs and interesting vocals, and I find it to be very personal, which is not what I could say about this song that sounds really impersonal and lazy.
OK if you ask so nicely I will give it an another shot :p Though I did like Mother Machine and Electricity songs like Lost in Babylon kept me off.
This album, is not better than We are the others, in my opinion :/ pretty boring if you ask me :(
Antonio Nešić haha, same here! Mother machine & Electricity are some of my favourites and I find Babylon to be the weakest link of the album, I usually skip it :)) I also love Milk and Honey, and I want you is interesting, too. Especially creepy when you're listening to the lyrics, too; pretty intense... I also like to sing Get the devil out of me, as it's really really fun vocally :P
