I am so grateful you are sharing these wonderful videos that cover the life cycle of these fascinating creatures. I find the whole process quite amazing (yet it can be difficult to view in real life) so discovering such clear detailed videos is very exciting and a real treat. I was getting a little frustrated because nearly every video seemed to only be about Monarchs (nothing against Monarchs but others deserve their time in the spotlight. The babies hatching are so adorable!
If anyone was wondering why they are just sitting there after moulting - fist it’s tiring work (like trying to shimmy your skinny jeans off without using your arms or hands) and then the new outer layer needs some time to harden. They will sometimes “puff” themselves out with air to make more room to grow in.

Hi Manita! The world of insects is both beautiful and cruel. The fact that not all insects are liked in their form, but the beauty of butterflies is always amazing. Their preimaginous stages, however, sometimes do not (larvas). But it is their life and the right to natural development. It's my passion to capture what most people do not notice. It's a pity! Thank you for a nice comment. Adam

Do you know what type of Spurge they are feeding on? Cypress Spurge?I reared 12 of these from ova given to me some years ago. It took 12 (expensive) potted Spurge plants from a garden centre to feed them up to pupation. After the final instar larvae had demolished the leaves they whittled down the stems to near ground level before going into their wandering pre-pupation phase. For their pupation I put them into individual plastic tubs filled with tissue. They all pupated successfully.

Awesome, in the truest sense of the word. Notice that each time the caterpillar emerges, it is drawn to the tips- the tenderest parts of the plant to eat. Maria Montessori (Yes, THAT Montessori) realized that humans also have stages when they are most drawn to what they need to learn. Once they pass that stage it is much more difficult for us to do, like new language acquisition. Which means that we all could be poly-lingual if we were exposed to multiple languages as we began to speak. Fascinating, isn't it?
