This is a really good video. I wonder what it would have felt like to be in that environment at that time. I wonder how many people knew that they were playing people who would become synonymous with some of these games. It's great to have stuff out like this for people who didn't get into fighting games until later to explain the history of the community.

What a absolutely fantastic video. The content, audio mixing, script and editing are all on point. About a year ago I made a retrospective on the Melty Blood series and finding information on development was a challenging at times so I can only imagine the amount of research you needed to do to cover an event like SBO. I hope you make more content in the future because seeing other people passionately talk about fighting games just inspires me to talk about them even more, like tokido aid fighting games are truly something so great.

I remember finding a section from the 2004 #Reload SBO tournament uploaded on CZcams a couple of years ago. I was amazed at its production and hardcore style, but I didn't end up doing much digging on SBO. The way you described the history of it made it really tied that loose thread together for me, a thread I had almost forgotten about. Thanks for the video.

There was indeed a period in the early 2000s where although fighting games weren't helping to support a thriving FGC like they did post '09, they were doing pretty well as home experiences. I'm thinking about games like Tekken Tag Tournament, Soul Calibur 2, the DOA series, Virtua Fighter 4, and even Smash Melee (let's not argue about whether or not it's a "real" fighting game, lol). I'm not a hardcore fighting game fan but I still had some interest back then in playing fighting games casually. After that early 2000s period it definitely felt like things died down for some years before SF4 blew the doors open for everyone, both casual and pro player alike.
Totally agree, I grew up in this era and I always had fgs to play. 3D games, Melee, GGXX and even some of the older Street Fighter collections were what kickstarted my love for the genre.

Let me flex as a Daigo stan.
Daigo is the only player in SBO history to get top 3 in 3 different games in a single tournament.
Unlike EVO, while still super impressive of tokido to get top 8 in multiple games, let's be real for a moment, he didn't get top 8 competing against the best talent those games have to offer. Tekken 6 didn't have the majority of Korean players. Blazblue didn't have the majority of the Japanese players (hence his lower placing at a Blazblue japanese tournament he entered after).
It took a while for EVO's other games to catch up to the prestige of SSF4 (or could be argued SF4 AE) Evo's level of talent pool.
Now back to giving Tokido props, there are games where he competed against the top talent and did amazing like KOF, & Marvel 3. I don't think those (along with SF titles) top 8s deserve the same amount of credit as top 8s in Tekken, and Blazblue. However, that he was able to play at a good level in Tekken and Blazblue deserves recognition, albeit less than the ones he competed with the very best.

While it's not as big as Tougeki, Toushinsai is basically the modern successor of that event. At the very least, it has qualifiers at arcades, is single elimination with team tournaments for the more popular titles, and features various games (though it focuses on newer titles).
There seems to be far less western interest in it, however. I don't really hear about western players traveling to its last chance qualifiers like I did with Tougeki. Pretty sure there are also fewer western qualifiers than Tougeki had.
