As a Heat fan, I'm incredibly proud of the way Giannis handled this. His speech honestly hit home to me. GG. Players like Jimmy Buckets and Giannis make it easy to be a fan of basketball. This was an amazing playoff series.
Exactly because the mentality behind that question can easily go around and hit the heat too
Was it a failure that the 3 against Boston in game 7 was a miss instead of driving to get a lay up or wait to set the offense?
If Jimmy didn't miss that shot against Boston maybe today he wouldn't be hitting these crazy shots of the last 2 games
Very true as a heat fan regardless of us beating the bucks we respect giannis we are only celebrating becuase this was a battle of david and goliath and we prevailed
Mad respect. He’s a real one
@@tpsam If the heat lost to the hawks in 5 last year it would undoubtedly be considered a failure.
@@tpsam Yes, If someone has a goal to get a promotion every year then it is a failure if they don't. It's ok to accept defeat and failure, it's getting back up and getting better to succeed next time that counts

Not really. He learns from failure. There nothing wrong with admitting you failed.

On a very tough night, in a very emotional state, this man decided to teach instead of blame. Class act. Good life lesson for the reporter.
Every kid, coach should hear this. This is life nothing is given you have to go get it! Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.
Every snarky comment about his words, and I have read some, completely miss the point. You cannot win every contest--how you handle this is a testament to your character.
I swear if lebron said the same thing after getting swept in the first round everyone will be clowning him
You can tell it was emotional, personal and passionate because he broke it down so well and English isn't even his native language, you know that came from a deep place.
Personally as a Greek, I recognized a Greek attitude on his answer, this kid faced many problems when he was a child,so he knows what's more valuable than the success. It's the way to the success. Cause success is just a moment of podium, what about earlier or later? That's why he referred the family care as examples, and MJ. Ααα ρε Γιάννη... The more humble the better results. Others can win too, that's life.
@@retrovinyl5572 that's right and everything but if Giannis had a real coach he would've won last season and this one
Failure doesn't exist ... because if I fail today, I'm gonna learn something and be better tomorrow."
-Kobe
@@BigPurp9 An applicable quote to summarize Giannis' mentality, as Kobe was a mentor to Giannis. As a competitor, you want to win, but sports are so much more than a shiny golden trophy. To say Giannis does not feel pain is obviously false, he just doesn't let his pain cloud over the memories he made along the way.
*It's scary how genuine and great Giannis is. He said all of that naturally while holding back his emotions against the reporter. The NBA is so happy to have him as the face of the league.*

Mad respect to Giannis for answering this the way he did. Truly a humble player, who showed character and conviction.
tru
disagree, of course it's a failure by definition. By saying it's not a failure, then it's also not a success a few years ago winning the championship. He's answering a different question.
@John L Giannini has spoken before about never getting too high after a win or too low after a loss. He seems locked in on the process and the grind itself rather than the results. Obviously he wants to win but more important than whether he ends the season with a W or L he seems obsessed with putting in the WORK and that's something I respect
@@belakthrillby I think it's a question that touch a nerve so he answered a different question. Of course it's a great answer and the perspective is refreshing. But it's an answer a highly paid bastketball star can easily give. I'm just here to view great basketball games.
It was a huge L… Giannis got emotional like a female. It was a simple yes or no question.
How can anyone not like Giannis? This response was so inspiring, controlled, and humble. It has to be difficult to answer these reporters, especially when some are trying to antagonize or invoke an emotional response for clicks, but he maintained himself without even getting disrespectful. That was something else right there. The face of the NBA and a great example of being a great human being.
Everything he said was great, except for when he said losing isn’t a big deal. It is, it should be. Contrast what he said to jimmy and it is easy to understand why one of them won and the other didn’t. One was ready and willing to accept defeat, one wasn’t.
@luc rative Giannis missed 2.75 games of this series. Trying to boil down the results of the series to "Giannis was willing to lose and Jimmy wasn't " is asinine. Giannis has had the same philosophy since before he won the chip in 2021. Why didn't his mentality make the Bucks lose then if it's as simple as him having the wrong mindset?
Welll...fans shud be frustrated ...it's becoming apparent that he durants it by choking clutch FT and KD fumbles ball quite often in clutch moments....and misses clutch FT...he'd be a greater player if he practices FT 110%MORE THAN HE DOES...AND IF HE DOES, WELLL, THEN HE JUST AS WELL BE THE NEW HACK A GIANNIS RSST OF CAREER
I'm pretty sure he's a great guy, but I don't like seeing him run through my team getting away with 10 charges a game.
I still like giannis but hes just death wrong in this aspect, in europe you get demoted if you lose 2 much so this whole there are no losers in sports is ridiculous
As a 50+ year Bucks fan, I'm so proud of Giannis. As soul crushing as this playoff loss was, for him as a human being, his mates, and the fan base, he didn't lose his composure, he didn't pass blame, he, in his own measured temperament, his path to success, steps to overcome to succeed. It's not all sunshine and rainbows. In these raw, gut wrenching moments, he showed everyone, I hope, what it takes to live they're lives in pursuit of greatness, happiness, whatever goal it is in life that they might want to achieve. I think we forget, over time, or lose sight of these things. He is a true leader, an example to all of us, as humans, of how we view life, success, and loving acknowledgement of our fellow humans. I am humbled by this kid, and I hope we never lose him. I know I'll never lose sight of him and what he brought back to me, as a Buck's fan. I just love him.
Humble pie tastes great doesn't it? It's even better watching someone consume it after the fair amount of trash talking that was being flung around before the series started & even when Antetokounmpo came back.
To the victor goes the spoils & I'm sooo ecstatic that my Heat did what they did. That in itself was a big victory for me since all the talk about us getting swept a few years back was all anybody talked about.
😊😊😊😊😊
You and Giannis can call it "steps to overcome" or "not all sunshine and rainbows" or "gut wrenching moments" or "you can't win them all" or however you want to describe it. It's all just another way to describe failures along the way. So although Giannis does have a great attitude about failure, he is refusing to call it what it actually is. The Bucks are a championship caliber team with the best record in the NBA but got beat by the #8 seed in the 1st round. Their season was most definitely a failure.

This young man is a true champion. His parents raised him well.
I've definitely been in Shaq's shoes. Like he said, that's the mentality many of the greats take on so that they never stop improving. Jordan always made it person. Kobe had the Mamba Mentality. It can be a powerful driver, but it's an incredibly difficult way to live.
Thinking of losing as a failure is exhausting. When you take on Giannis's mentality, you not only continue to work to improve, but you also are able to have joy after losing, because you know you've learned from it and that it'll be valuable for you moving forward.
Nah, Jordan would have handled it the same with a reporter, definitely Giannis is upset after losing and he's gonna comeback next year but being called a failure for being injured and missing games is ridiculous.
MJ actually took years off to have a break after his 3 peats, now Shaq could call that a failure too, Kobe was much more dedicated, but even he won't call it a failure, it would be a disappointment, I mean Kobe won 5 rings out of 20 years in NBA, you cannot always win.
You summed it up perfectly. Its basically two schools of thought: one that says that winning is the only thing that matters, and the other that says that there are lessons to be learned and improvements to be made in every stage, win or lose.
The way he calmed down and decided not to make it personal was very mature. Basically the opposite of Dillon Brooks which is a good side to be on.

That was actually the best answer I have ever heard from a athlete, when a reporter asks the "Was this year a failure" question.

No one achieves their goals every single time, but if you have a goal and fail to achieve it, that's literally the definition of failing. The thing is, failing is part of success, failures are the best stepping stones for future successes, but for that you have to recognize them as such and work on what made you fail, if you don't recognize them as such, you are never improving on them, the Bucks have been suffering from that for years, we all know the main reason why the failed, we all know the main reason why they have failed every season but one since they became contenders, Mike Budenholzer, but since the Bucks as an organization refuse to look at themselves and see why they didn't win, it just keeps happening, literally the only time they won was despite Bud yet they are the only ones who don't see that, and it's cause this kind of mindset.

Giannis going full Mourinho mode 😅😅
Respect, respect!
Mou didn’t make excuses and never benefited from refs decisions. Especially in 2011. Don’t compare him to Giannis trash ass 10/23 at the FTL. You go 17/23, they win this game comfortably.
@@colinedelman6392 They don't blow a 16 point lead and they win. Giannis will have bad nights at the free throw line everyone knows this.
Mou always put in context for people who were pushing lies for clicks, like when he had the "football heritage" speech. People set unrealistic expectations and even though he'd overperform for United, they'd see it as a failure that he did not win a trophy even though the team was not on the level of Chelsea, City and later Liverpool and now Arsenal.
It has been over 3 years and he has been proven right.
🤫🤫🤫
I actually like Giannis' answer here. You can only control what you can.
Like making free throws
@@Liam-ex4mf walked right into that one lmao.
I love his response. He did great
I love it Giannis answer 💯❤️ it's no failure it's just stepping stones to success
Much respect to Giannis. Wisdom in his words, and it's not just semantics when you don't call it failure. It's having respect for the process, for all the hard work, for his team and organization, for the things you can't control, and ultimately for himself.
Underrated comment
I truly adore Giannis and his mindset. Granted emotions are high and I worry my Celtics could fall into a similar fate this season if we continue to squander opportunities in our grasp. Loss is something we have to deal with to understand that life is not just constant wins.
I agree with Giannis!!! And I admire his explanation of why he believes it's not a failure. To call it a failure is to negate all the importance of the journey itself.
This man giannis has a really wonderful soul and a great way of thinking he s a big man and his heart is even bigger 💓
I love this dude’s heart and ethic. He put it in the right terms. He didn’t fail. He got bested. They were the first seed. 🎉
So Shaq basically saying Charles’s whole career is a failure. Lmaooo
Individual achievements and team achievements are in separate categories. Giannis is the leader of the first seed in the east and they loss to a play in team that’s a team failure
Shaq was delusional in his response...
Basically lmfao but I am totally on board. You play to win championships. That's the whole fuckin point. And yes I am NOT a dame time guy. I want rings from my favorite players. WTF is crying about chuck or Patrick Ewing... exactly NOBODY. Circumstances withstanding...long live the king 👑
@@joeromeo3436 lmfao shaq got carried by kobe he think he own those championship??? wtf guy is delusional he cant even shoot free throws LMFAOOO
@@blackpharaoh5561 Patrick Ewing and Charles barkley still better than lebron.
I respect each one of the people we saw in this video for speaking their minds without loud volume, or insults.
This is how we (myself included) should be able to conduct ourselves. Differences of opinion, and they still had class.
I love watching Gianni break down. Good, let the frustration flow through you.
One of the greatest discussions around the game of life, not just basketball
My boy Giannis was speaking some real shyt just then..snapped on buddy.
he shoulda had that same energy shooting FTs instead of looking scared and shaky
@@RealParadox85he threw a bullet at Middleton because he was scared of going to the line😂
Facts that’s one of the realest interviews I ever heard in sports and these idiot talking heads in the national media needed to hear none of them ever competed at this high of a level to be asking dum questions like that you don’t always win you win some you lose some comeback next year and they’ll be better give credit to miami giannis missing those 3 games gave them confidence that they could win and by the time he came back it was too late simple
Giannis eating them sour grapes, nice diversion to talk about future happy happy stuff but can't say that all the regular season nose flaring chest pumping wasn't him letting the league know he's the man. First round exit is a failed season😢😢😢
Jose he just explained how it wasn’t a “failure.” I’ll ask you what he asked the reporter: have you gotten promoted every year? If not, are you a failure? So please. Yeah he gets paid to do what he loves, Jose do you?!! Are you a failure 😂😂 goof troop
Amen, Giannis!!! What an intelligent, great man
Giannis incredible human being wish him all the luck in the world
Real stuff from Giannis. It's not the end of the world if you don't win a championship.
Facts man's acting like he ain't gonna get another chance look at lebron lost 6 championships Jerry west lost, what 8 chips 9 chips
Terrible mindset
Y'all say this now and then turn around and put down KD or Kyrie in the same breath when they had injuries one by Giannis hurting KAI...so stop.
Anyone else that woulda said this y'all would be in their grill...
@@JM-qn3tf not terrible at all. Yea I lost but I'm not gonna die from it just hop in the lab and get better for next season

Shaq giving his four time champion speach, “That’s how the cookie crumbles sometimes brotha”😂😂😂😂😂 I felt that😂😂😂
😂
Very nicely said giannis. Hmmm couldn't handle it better. You can also see his control and humbleness and being wise to it.
What control and humbleness lol. A millionaire dissing on reporters when he had a pretty bad perfomance. All fans ask is acknowledgement not excuses to show them they care.
When you take responsibility on a loss because you know its true thats humbleness not this.
I love how he gathered himself and answered that question with a concise and logical argument. good answer!
Couldn’t have given a more perfect answer, props to Giannis
i live in greece and we never watched the NBA until Yannis, i stayed up late from 5 in the morning to 8 in the morning. sure Yannis messed up at the free throws but in the end of the day he gave everything he had, he is still the MVP in our hearts no matter what, Jimmy was just at another level at the playoffs, there’s no one to blame. we hope that yannis is good and healthy and we hope that next year he will bring the trophy to Milwaukee
Salute To you Giannis. I love your answer, You have a New fan.
Emotional or otherwise, maturity comes at different stages in life for different fol. the day you are able to respond to accusations, disrespect or tongue in cheek comments, and are able to continue to respond, to the point you gain respect from your peers, is the day you can have pride in your code of conduct. holding back from personal shots, and responding with respect to disrespect, that is leadership traits right there.
You could not possibly ask for a better ambassador of the game... A titan of the game, he will surely be missed in the rest of these playoffs... and I was so down on him after watching the implosion in the final 17 minutes of action, but he could not have possible handled this any better as a man, and a leader... He owned up the entire post game presser, he didn't run or hide.
Very well articulated by Mr. Giannis, fantastic example of Giannis upbringing in being taught " How to think " as opposed to " What to think "
👏🏾✊🏾
Giannis deserves all of the accolades he had earned and more. This is an example of how a leader should lead even through disappointment and frustration.
I love shack with his basketball vernacular that's the way the cookie crumbles brotha!
If ever there was a moment of character in sports, it was this one by a humble African kid from Greece who has fought and succeeded too much to deserve being faced with an ignorant question like that moments after losing in the playoffs. His answer was passionate, articulate, diplomatic and very thoughtful - he reminds of Kareem (who I admire greatly) in so many ways, and the NBA is lucky to have him. In my eyes, he's the face of the league.
African kid from Greece? LMAO! Kobe was an African kid from Italy too, LOL!
Diplomatic? The dude went personal on a reporter that didn't went personal on him, he just asked a fair question strictly within a professional context and Giannis brought up his family? Even he realized that he went too far and had to dial it back.
He just sugarcoated the fact that they did fail and that's the worse you can do, cause failures are the best stepping stones for future successes whenever you recognize a failure as such, that is what allows you to see what made you fail and work on it, in this case the answer is really obvious, as it has been the main problem with the Bucks almost every season since they became contenders, Budenholzer, but since the Bucks reflect the mindset that Giannis showed here, they refuse to recognize Bud as the biggest reason for their failures and keep tripping on the same rock over and over again.
@@Iqnacio. ok buddy let's take it back a notch, you're just looking for something to be offended by in his response.
giannis was professional, passionate and kept himself from personally attacking the reporter when he felt that the reporter was simply hunting for a soundbyte like the previous season. he didn't insult the reporter on any level he merely provided a metaphor through which the reporter (and us, from my perspective) were able to relate to his frustration/goals
you clearly hating
One of the worst post game interviews ever. He is a superstar and he choked. Just shut the f up and come back next year and prove them wrong. But right now take the L and shut up. Dont make excuses. He is the reason the bucks didnt win. Missing 13 fts, 7 turnovers, throwing the ball away cause he was scared of going to the line? Wtf. Stfu and come back stronger next year. Stop saying this was "humble" and showed "character"... He was just making excuses and feeling bad about himself because he screwed up
How exactly did he brought his family??? Did you even hear the interview? He just said that on his work he works towards sime goals and providing for his family is one of them. Are you really trying to twist that as if he said something bad about the reporter?
To show composure and restraint to not make it personal shows the level of professionalism and respect Giannis has towards people in general.
this was cool hearing everyone's different mindset and definitions of success, progress, and failure
He responded in an unbelievable, professional manner, especially after being caught off guard with that question. Kudos …
A lot players in the NBA - and the world as a whole, can take a massive lesson from this man. A guy who was raised right. Champion, win or lose.
Butler was punking Holiday the last quarter and OT, no one stepped up to Jimmy, Heat just outdogged the Bucks.
lol that stare down by Jimmy after he made the shot close to the end.
@@willn8664 lol it started in the 4th Jimmy was str8 up talking shyt in his face, Giannis should have took on that challenge, Jrue got absolutely torched this series.
Because the coach is a moron crowder is sitting on the bench why? The coach is the reason this series went the way that it did. He didn’t even bother to double man pure stupidity. Giannis missed basically 3 games and I don’t think he’s fully healthy it swong the series. Props to the Heat
Also Giannis can’t shoot free throws in the playoffs, at least not yet. That’s the steps to success he needs to take, just go home and shoot free throws until next season. He missed 12 that game.
Wow, that was great by Giannis. Yeah, I remember my dad saying "What is failure but postponed success?" I dunno where he quoted it from but I lived it my whole life. We miss you, dad!
I get that Giannis is trying to go by MJ's philosophy of learning from your losses. But the difference between them is that one claims that there's no failure in sports while the other used failure as fuel.
Different take on the same results. One isn’t above the other, just a perspective change. I️ like some who take it personal and see it as failure, room for improvement, and I️ also like Giannis approach, very mature response.
He plays at the highest level of basketball and makes millions doing what he loves.. I don't see that as a failure at all.
You prob don't have a job but because you volunteer making no money doesn't mean you aren't a failure
