  • When you pack to Europe here is what NOT to forget for an international flight. When we traveled to Europe - specifically Munich, Berlin, Belgium, Normandy, and Paris I forgot to pack some essentials. This video will help you know what not to forget to pack when you travel to Europe. Do not forget to pack a converter kit. This kit has adapters for the plugs around the world. You can just take the ones for Europe. Do not forget to pack headphone jacks for your phone but also for the airplane’s onboard entertainment system. On our flight, it was the old end. So I packed my nice Apple headphones with that flat jack, but I also packed my old ones. #traveltoeurope #packforeurope #longhaulflight

One tip you missed. If you use a wash cloth when showering or bathing, remember to bring your own, maybe in a small zip bag. Most European hotels do not provide wash cloths, only towels.

I like the compression packing cubes best. The reason is my ziplocks always leak air back in. I have to pack them last because of that. At this point I am only going to use them for when we move. With the compression cubes unless the zipper comes undone it stays put. I will say this though konmari folding style does not work well for compression cubes or ziplock bags unless you lay them flat. Standing them up like Maria Kon does works well for regular cubes or even just the suitcase. Also an update for a comment on a previous video of yours. I like the konmari for regular packing cubes and compression the best out of all the various folding methods I tried including rolling my six inch rolls. I got about five more outfits in the compression and three more in the regular cubes for my carry on. I actually have more room for souvenirs with that method taking the same number of outfits than I did before.
Also a tip for a dryer-less washing situation, run the spin cycle 2 to 3 times. 3 times is best. This will wring out more water so the clothes will dry faster with air drying. I also just hang the stuff straight up on the hangers like I would with a dryer.
Also I hate to tell you this, but "donating" stuff to hotel staff is one of their biggest pet peves (at least here in the usa). I had a friend who worked as the cleaning manager at a best western. Most hotels require they either put the stuff in lost and found (sometimes up to a year) or trash it. Once the time frame is up, it is tossed out in the trash. The only thing they keep is chargers and the reason is that those are frequently requested by hotel guests. The maids prefer tips or thank you notes, and it is best if you leave a note saying it is a tip for them so they don't get into trouble. If you are going to trash your stuff then they ask you place it in the trash bin or bag so they know you won't be calling to get it back.

      @TravelTipsbyLaurie  Před 5 lety +3

Oh no! I hope no one was stressed; I did put mine in the trash can; but I should've written a note. Love the knowledge about the cubes. And I'm going to pass along the hack! Thanks again for watching!

Great tips! We started staying in AirBnB or similar on our second family trip to Europe, and we haven't looked back. We typically get a full apartment, and a washer/dryer is essential. We had a dryer in Amsterdam, but not in Spain. Note to all regarding foreign appliances, there are differences! The dryer in Amsterdam did not vent to the outside, but it had a large water collection tank that needed emptying. I had to cobble together google translate and online owner's manuals to figure that out! In Spain, it's air-dry city, so all of those travel fabric quick dry clothes come in handy!
Recently used Foot Glide on a heavy walking trip, and it was life changing! I typically get a hot foot walking all day, especially the balls of my feet. A liberal swiping of foot glide made that a non-issue, and we had 8-10 mile days of walking for five straight days.

Kristie Gurrola Usually enough detergent for one or two washes is left. Simply message your host for details. Otherwise, use a local laundrette. Most European cities and even small towns have them. They provide detergent for an additional, usually reasonable, price.

We do have plenty of shops here in Europe in case you forget anything :-) Also, find out which countries do not use euro as their currency. I've seen non-European tourists coming here to Norway thinking they can use the wad of euro that they got somewhere else. Visa and Mastercard are very widely accepted. AmEx can be very limited and Discover is unknown. Also, don't bring travellers checks, especially to Scandinavia, people here don't even know what they are anymore.

Hi Laurie! Love your helpful videos. One quick comment for others. I travel a lot between the US and Europe and the UK. I often meet new travelers who don’t necessarily understand that there is a difference between ADAPTERS and CONVERTERS. This is soooo important! An adapter simply allows you to plug in an item that has your standard American plug. However, it does NOT change the electrical current. You can use adapters for smart devices (like your smartphone) which has the ability to adapt to various currents, but for anything else, you MUST use a converter. This gets tricky because the electrical current in the UK (240 volts standard) is different than the electrical current throughout the EU (varies by country but mostly 220 volts). Purchase a dual converter, meaning it can convert 120 volts (US electrical current) to anything from 250 to 210 volts in the UK or EU and vice versa. Remember too that most hair dryers should never be used with a converter because most converters can only handle a wattage of 500 or less. Most US hairdryers use between 1200 and 1800 watts, which will immediately blow a fuse. This stuff is important to understand because electricity is NO JOKE. Many places in Europe have very old electrical systems and you could cause an electrical fire or worse, have the item you’re holding explode in your hand.

Regarding leaving items with hotel staff at the end of trip: my son & I spent 10 days on Riviera Maya & Cancun. We brought with us a nice-sized, blow up raft to use in the ocean to just play & bob around on the waves. It was in superb shape at the end of our trip. I wasn't going to fold it up to bring home yet I couldn't stand the idea of just throwing it away.
With lots of gestures & pantomimes I tried to tell the woman who cleaned our room that I wanted her to take it, to use with her own kids. She kept insisting "no, no!". My brain suddenly woke up & I realized she couldn't take any items that we left behind without permission, as she could be accused of theft at the end of her shift.
I then spoke with a desk clerk & explained what we wanted to do with the raft. He had me write a short note on hotel stationary, simply saying it was okay for workers to take the raft. I did so, then used some of the packing tape I always carry with me on trips & taped the note to the raft. That ensured that the cleaning woman could exit the hotel at the end of her shift without any trouble or accusations that she had stolen the raft from a guest's room.
You might want to keep that whole procedure in mind when you leave a hotel & want to make sure your items end up where you really wanted them to go. Only took a few minutes, after which I was confident that my used raft would be used by others after we left.

Love your tips, Laurie. I am a list maker, and whenever I travel I make a list of absolutely EVERYTHING that I am taking. Planning England/Scotland May 2022 for 3 weeks since it was a no go this year. I am only taking a carry-on and a personal item, a big flat bottom recessed zipper cross-body fabric purse I made, which I will use as a mini suitcase. I don't want to be bothered with a lot of luggage. II have already done a practice packing, and I can fit in everything I need: 4 lightweight pants, 8 tops, and other essential items. Will wash some things as I go. I am going to use compression bags for final packing so I will have lots of room. I have a small backpack I can use on a daily basis, not carrying a purse everyday, and a security pouch. I lso made a padded phone pouch that holds my phone in with elastic so I can leave he srap around my neck when I open it to take pictures. And I put a zipper in a sturdy tote I have that packs flat in case (for sure) of souvenirs so I can use it as a carry-on on the way home and check my carry-on with clothes in it. Keep tipping!

Also, if you're going to be going to any churches in Europe, many of them have rules about what you are allowed to wear - usually to the tune of knees and shoulders must be covered - and they WILL enforce these rules without exception. So if you plan to visit any (or decide on a whim to check any out), make sure you can meet those guidelines, or they may not let you in. If I will be wearing sleeveless shirts at all, I make sure to keep a sweater or scarf with me so that I can put it on for going into any churches. Those zip-off hiking pants can also be a convenient option if the weather is hot. Personally, for hot weather in Europe, I prefer lightweight knee-length skirts and lightweight short sleeve shirts (polo or button-up) in colors that can mix and match (last time, I brought 5 shirts (1 was pajamas), 2 skirts, 1 sweater, 1 lightweight fleece, 1 wide scarf, a raincoat, 3 pairs of shorts (1 for pajamas, 2 for under the skirts), 6 pairs of socks, 1 pair capri leggings, and 3 pairs of shoes - sneakers (only wore these for the last 2 days because my ankle started hurting), black flats, and all-leather hiking shoes (these are what I wore most of the time); I could wear anything with anything, which gave me lots of options for 2 weeks).
A few things I discovered when I was in Italy and had to do laundry by hand in the sink:
-if you only wash the part of the garment that actually needs it, it dries much faster (even midweight wool socks) - if you're going to be staying at one place for several days, then you can afford to do a more thorough washing, but it's never fun to have to pack wet/damp clothes in a suitcase
-hotel shampoo works well as laundry detergent, so there's no need to bring any from home, unless you have to use a specific one due to allergies or something like that (then definitely bring your own, but it really doesn't take much)
-don't wait until you've run out of clothes to wash them if you don't have access to any laundry facilities - if you wash as you go, you will always have enough clean clothes
-roll up wet laundry in a towel & squeeze the water out (more than once is even better) before hanging up to dry - similar to running the spin cycle a few times, it makes things dry much faster; I sit on the roll for a few minutes, and that really gets the water out

I started packing a small square noodle packs. I packed some for Athens because we were traveling in winter and last time we went to Italy, I could not find soup and I wanted some in case. It saved us in Athens! We fell asleep at 2pm and woke up at 2am and that was what we had since there was no 24 hour convenience stores around. I also pack a metal cup and travel chopsticks for just that reason.

In Germany nothing had air conditioning! The hospital didn't have it either. I had a month and two surgeries in the hospital and it was unusally warm while I was in there. The week after getting out I was wearing a sweatshirt and jeans. Germans wore birkenstock sandles and socks year round. The weather can go from the 80s to 50s there. Crazy weather and lots of rain. Great video!

Here’s my travel tip to Europe. My husband and I go to Germany every year. A few days before we travel, I wake up an hour earlier, so that on our travel day, I get up at 3 AM. That is 9 AM in Germany. I easily sleep on the plane and because I have adjusted my body to German time, I don’t have jet lag and don’t wake up in the middle of the night. Tschüss!

Thanks Laurie. I'm off on my travels soon so this is useful. You're right, it rains a lot in Europe. I live in Wales and was highly amused by some Irish people commentong on how rainy it is here! Rain sweeps over from the Atlantic and dumps itself on the west coast and Ireland. I use blister plasters. Always pack them, I don't use them often because I'm more canny now about shoes! My husband still prefers fabric plasters. You don't have to buy the branded ones, pharmacy own brands work as well. Looking forward to your next video.

Regarding using U.S. electrical appliances in Europe, you might be able just use a plug adapter instead of a current converter.
Because the only electrical items I brought on my last trip to England were my computer and phone, all I needed was a plug adapter. That was the advice I read in a Rick Steves guidebook.
If in this case the charger is of fairly recent manufacture, the rating for input current may range 100-240 volts AC, which for me made a voltage converter unnecessary. See the appliance data label or owner’s manual.
For hand sanitizer, I brought a handful of hand sanitizer towelettes, which I didn’t put in my liquids bag.
I watch your videos to plan for the next trip and live vicariously until COVID is solved.

I do my wash in the hotel tub if I am not renting a house. I have washed undies, leggings, bras etc. (actually 1 time even jeans... mistake) but the bath tub is good for washing clothes and i hang them on the towel rack or something to dry. I always request extra towels when I arrive because you need extra towels for this purpose (so you can roll up the wet clothes in them to remove excess water before hanging. If you are leaving damaged clothing in Europe, put it in the trash. Most of Europe has no need for cast aways. We are (mostly) not third world. In fact several of our countries have a much higher standard of living than in the US. . . which is one of the reasons you aren’t expected to tip in many places. Check a good guide book before you leave for local culture norms.
