Should you buy Mafia Definitive Edition in 2023?
18 years passed between the original Mafia and the remade Mafia Definitive Edition. It mostly remained faithful to the original, other areas maybe a little less so but with it initially releasing as part of a trilogy, where Mafia 2 was given a very lazy once over remaster and Mafia 3 received the most indistinguishable and imperceivable aesthetic touch ups I’ve ever seen.
Regardless of what money centric package this game was wrapped up in to be sold, it can be bought separately for less than $15 or £12 on all platforms. But even when it first released at full price, developers Hangar 13 paid a commendable amount of respect towards the original, whilst still modernising aspects to today’s standards and masterfully remaking one of the most memorable narrative driven experiences I’ve played.

Finished the Mafia remake yesterday and loved it. It's been a long time since I was looking forward to the next story beat in a video game. They did a fantastic job creating 1930's Chicago/New York-esque city. The driving and traffic were great and combat/shooting pretty decent. I will disagree with you that I liked having all the side stuff in a separate mode. It felt so LEAN to play an open world game with no distractions. Overall just a very enjoyable experience.
That’s awesome Zane! I know what you mean about distractions. I’ve only recently taught myself to ignore certain distractions in open worlds and play the meat of the game, rather than the fluff. I still would have preferred some side content that wasn’t a totally different game mode. Glad you enjoyed it mate!
I would really love an 80's mafia game. I feel like thats an era tha franchise hasnt explored that is one of the more popular eras for the Mafia.

It’s a perfect remake. Played it through twice and am going through it again. Will be a yearly or bi-yearly playthrough for me.
Loved it! but in my opinion it was way to short & i didnt feel any need to do any exploration.. Outside of that i loved it!
They're the only weak points. Still a fantastic game

I loved this remake, but there's one detail I miss from the original Mafia that didn't make it here: Lucas Bertone's optional missions. It was nice to get new cars from that guy by doing him favors, some of which had unique objectives like crashing a hot car into the ocean just beyond the lighthouse, or taking a guy bleeding out in your car to a doctor, after which you get to see Lucas cleaning out the blood from the car as a freebie. In the remake, he just gives you photographs to hunt down hidden vehicles, which was a nice way to get you exploring the world without an objective marker, but it's such a waste to see Lucas sidelined like this, especially since I like that he's recast as a younger, shiftier mechanic now.
Yeah ur right. But still, there are some pretty good side missions in the remake. For example when you have to chase down the aliens and when you kill them, then the men in black come.

I keep replaying the game, it's oddly comforting driving with such nice music on and the atmosphere. The story is so good too. Imo its definitely well worth playing for every gamer. Shared on FB.

Any chance you like RPG's/shooters as well? if you want to roam around while listening to this era of music, I highly recommend Fallout 3/New Vegas/Fallout 4.
I can see both sides for whether or not separating campaign and open world is a good or bad thing. For me, I can see it as a refreshing approach. I find it harder to finish games nowadays because I feel compelled to tackle a little story here, a little side quest there, a little collectable there. But then I get burned out and resort to just rushing the story at the end to say "ok i'm finally done" lol. Having these separate could put (personally) my mind at ease to just enjoy the game. Great review!
Used to play the original through many times and just started playing this. Feels a bit "streamlined" with it's scripted tricks to lose chasers at the beginning etc. but those graphics ohhh, wish they would have made Mafia 2 with the same engine

Just started the remake a couple of days ago. Played a lot of open-world the last years where side-missions and bonus stuff being present in all of them and the lack of these was in fact a reason for taking on Mafia 1: def edition. Playing in Classic mode, hence it being the most "sim"-style. And like it! Really like it! Played the first mafia a long time ago and it´s nice to be back. Although I played through Mafia 3 some year ago but didn´t do the same for me as this one.
Can't believe I passed this up before but just completed yesterday and I was blown away, excuse the pun, every step. Incredible graphics, great characterisations, great gunplay, super impressive and immersive city. Incredible game and I'm on second play through. So good
For me…controls are janky, extremely repetitive, but glad it was free 6/10

I think everyone should play this just for the story alone.
Just getting into this and so far it's not bad at all. It doesn't have the tank control feel like MAFIA III. For $10, this would be a nice hold over for me until GTA 6 or RDR3 appears on my radar screen.

I would love to see a movie made with all of the actual voice characters playing their live action characters on screen.
I will get to this, I WILL!! Played maybe 15 hours of Mafia 3 since it was on PS Plus Extra and dug it (the soundtrack!) but would really like to play the classic Prohibition era one just to live in that world for a while. A netx-gen console update would be nice, cheers!

I bought it a week and a half ago and thought it was excellent. Maybe a bit short, but I think I’m gonna replay it on classic mode.

While I encountered some game-breaking bugs and technical issues with the PC version of the game, I must admit that the visuals were truly impressive when the game ran smoothly. The city environments were stunning, and the voice acting and facial animations were well done. Despite the challenging racetrack mission and the average controls, there were still some satisfying aspects to the driving experience.
I will definitely have to check this out so I can get some gameplay clips uploaded! Especially since it's available on Xbox Game Pass! 💚
It's an awesome game.. I played Mafia 2 and 3 a few years ago, so this was like playing a brand new prequel to me.. Mafia 1 and 2 have crazy endings.. better than some GTA games..
When I was young I played this games. Me and my friends, finished it like 6 times, and only the original. Pure core gaming, not buying everything from everywhere like we see in modern games. If you want that, there’s cyberpunk, gta. As far as games go, this one it’s iconic, much like crysis, prototype, assassins creed, deus ex, hit an. Those are like history of gaming. Today I feel, with this games, same thing, different maps. At their call, they are all the same game, copy-paste.

I've never played Mafia but played scarface when it released n always wished they'd remake that game, but I always seem to keep coming back to this game. I think I'm finally gonna play it.

What kind of question is this in the title? Of course people should buy Hangar 13's incredible Mafia: Definitive Edition. Its easily the last true gangster game that we've had on the market and undeniably 1 of the best remakes ever made. With Rockstar becoming a trash company by endlessly milking GTA 5 for a decade & refusing to reveal GTA 6, to Saints Row becoming a garbage woke franchise due to Volition losing their way of what used to make them great, the crime/gangster genre has been on the decline for years. Not to mention that other open world crime franchises like True Crime, Sleeping Dogs, Godfather, Scarface, The Getaway and many others have been dead for years. The Mafia franchise (as shown with the incredible Mafia Definitive Edition) is our last glimmer of hope thats keeping the open world crime/gangster franchise somewhat alive, even if its on life support.

@@aneeshakella121 Mafia 3 was flawed, but it wasnt bad. Despite its shortcomings, the story, atmosphere, soundtrack, characters and SP DLC was incredible. Besides, its more than obvious that Hangar 13 learned from the mistakes of Mafia 3 with the incredible remake of Mafia 1 called Mafia: Definitive Edition. If you want to know what a bad game is, play the terrible Saints Row reboot, now thats a bad game.....

Mafia 1 Definitive Edition plays wonderfully compared to the sluggish and clunky original. The original game aged like spoilt milk and is almost impossible to play today because of how outdated it feels......
I was hoping they added more to the open world. End game was literally nothing upon release. But the story is great
I tell people to avoid this title and just get mafia 2.
This is just a reskin of mafia 3 in the 30s with minor tweaks and 3 was fun for 30 minutes until it was wash and repeat.
Story has been amazing so far, however the gameplay is a bit eh..in realistic mode it takes a bit too many shots to take out one guy, I usually get the first shots on a guy to the upper chest area and they still kill me in fewer shots.
Gets a bit infuriating in the shootout missions, and there's a few missions in which the shootouts are too overblown to be immersive.
And so far it feels that when I finish the story, I will not be coming back to this game, as there's not much to do other than the story, at least I haven't seen any so far.

I hate to say this and I may regret it. But I have never played a single one of these games. Before you bite my head off, I just purchased the trilogy and am looking forward to it thanks to this video, now my backlog has gotten even bigger and this has just added to it lol.

It sucks you can't use the race track after the race or in free ride. Or find a race car anywhere. Or carry more than 2 guns. Kinda sucks tbh but I like it either way

The only thing i didnt liked are the aim and the fight mechanics.. compared to mafia 2 its very poor for me.

Sleeping Dogs for example is so much better than Mafia Definitive Edition in every aspect. Mafia DE is imply a corridor shooter with a very typical mission structure of cutscene, drive to mission, shoot enemies, car chase. The gunplay & character movement is also awful by comparison to far better games.

No. The game is merely a linear on rails corridor shooter with subpar gunplay & clunky controls. The driving is also poor so I would not recommend this at all.

I got this game after playing Sleeping Dogs, The Godfather, Saints Row 1 and 2 (in that order). I enjoyed the story, music, era, and visuals of this game. F me right?
