How North Korea Held the Greatest Pro Wrestling Event in History
Pyongyang, 1995. The lone American made his way down a long, dingy hallway, past several North Korean officials. He was nervous, afraid of what was to come - not just because of the constant surveillance he was under, but the state of the entire country. You see North Korea was in the midst of a devastating famine, with hundreds of thousands of its citizens suffering and dying from starvation and illnesses. He didn’t know what to expect, but he was there for a reason, and he had a job to do. At the entrance, he got his cue, and with one final breath, he stepped out..... into what was a sea of humanity.
Now this wasn’t just any crowd. This was a 190,000 North Koreans who were conditioned to see Americans as evil, who did not know pro wrestling was staged, that it was predetermined and choreographed. And here was a man - a blond-haired American man - who embodied everything they were legitimately told to hate.
This man was the legendary Ric Flair, one of the greatest American professional wrestlers of all time, and at this moment he was wondering what he had gotten himself into.
Now this happened in April, 1995, but the events that led to this actually started 11 months earlier...

Contrary to what Bischoff said, Collision in Korea isn’t on WWE Network/Peacock due to the show being a NJPW/WCW co-production, meaning that NJPW also has rights to the PPV as well.
WWE worked with NJPW to get Chris Benoit’s NJPW matches for the Hard Knocks: The Chris Benoit Story DVD.

Discovered this video through a pro wrestling reddit, having been a fan of Japanese pro wrestling for just under 20 years. The research is so good, I assumed it was a cool wrestling channel.. little did I realise this was just one of a set of absolutely amazing, interesting animated documentaries. Stunning work.

I knew about this event, but not nearly as much info given here. At the start, I thought to myself "really? 18 mins?" But it's related to wrestling and so I clicked anyway and then just didn't want it to end. What a beautiful way of storytelling and the attention to detail is eye-catching. And that Segway and the end? I didn't even realise until a few seconds in hahaha! Great work. Would love for you to cover more of such wrestling based stories.

Hiroshi Hase was also at that event, and himself became probably the most successful wrestler turned politician ever. He's had a very long career in Federal level politics in Japan, and was a cabinet minister under one of Shinzo Abe's governments.
