I wonder if an open roof like the old Dallas Cowboys stadium had. You could still blow AC throughout, but get some natural light coming in.
I also thought of grow lights. They used them in the Toyota stadium in Frisco Texas prior to the National Championship. After each game, just roll them out overnight and water before games.

If you add the entire Wasatch Front population: Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah counties, then the population within all four is over 2.5 million. All four counties are connected by commuter rail as well. SLC metro's population can be really misleading going off the US census . SLC can easily support a team.

Yes, you’re saying it correctly 😜
Also, Daybreak is a Master Planned Community (massive neighborhood) that is In South Jordan.
Interestingly, Smith’s Ballpark (yes, that view is fantastic) and the new ballpark in Daybreak are on the same Trax line.
Moving the Bees to Downtown Daybreak actually makes sense (at least to me). Smith’s Ballpark is publicly owned by the City (or County, I don’t remember exactly). The Larry H. Miller Company owns new development in Daybreak and they own the Bees. So consolidating makes sense, at least to me.
Unfortunately, Smith’s Ballpark is aging. During sellout games (usually Fireworks games), navigating the concourse is miserable. I would imagine Smith’s would need TONS of updates just to get the Team facilities up to snuff for the needs of an MLB team. The new Downtown Daybreak stadium probably already has plans for much of what the A’s would need/want.
Finally, the Larry H. Miller company/family is VERY savvy when it comes to professional sports in the state of Utah, as they owned the Utah Jazz for decades. I trust their thinking and deal making in these circumstances.
That said, thank you Brodie for your thoughts and analysis on the A’s situation. I’ve always found them to be well thought out and fair.
Now let’s hear you pronounce the name of the Mountain Range to the West of the new Daybreak Stadium. They are the “Oquirrh” Mountains 😜

  • @RyanFriden
    @RyanFriden Před 4 měsíci +5

Born and raised along the Wasatch Front. Would love to see the A’s here for a couple of years. I’m sure the new facility in Daybreak will be first-class, as the Miller’s have deep pockets and do things right. I would expect them to increase capacity as well, if the A’s wanted the brand new facility.
So you’d have a first class facility, with I’m sure added capacity, in an area that puts them close to the Salt Lake crowd, but also close enough to the Provo crowd. They’d be very close to lots of young people and families, and would have no problem selling out for all home games.
In all honesty, they’d probably end with more attendance than what they’ve been getting in Oakland the past few years, in a packed house, with an engaged community, that’s anxious for Major League Baseball. Seems like it would be a good solution.

wow, ya, Salt Lake City is certainly quite the curveball. Didn't expect that. Sacramento seems obvious, and the idea of using Oracle Park part time is a fascinating idea. I had never known the ballpark in Salt Lake City. That's a nice sized stadium and not that old really. I drove through Salt Lake City a few years ago, and I was blown away, had no idea about it. It's one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to. It's incredibly beautiful and way up nestled in the mountains and surrounded by very impressive, steep and beautiful mountains. Just an incredible landscape. It almost felt like a paradise up in the sky way up there. Anyways, Brodie, someday you should definitely go to Salt Lake City!!

I’m an A’s fan who lives in Salt Lake. I have so many thoughts regarding this situation and this video. First, you are pronouncing Wasatch correctly 🙂. Second, this whole Bee’s situation is pretty dumb as well. I think moving the team to Daybreak is more about real estate development than baseball. I haven’t been impressed by anything I’ve seen with the new park proposal. Smith’s, on the other hand, is beautiful. Wouldn’t it be ironic if the A’s weren’t even playing in the best and largest park in the market? No that’s where the AAA farm club of the Angels would play. Third, the combined statistical area of the Salt Lake, Ogden, and Provo metro areas has a population of 2.8 million, the 22nd largest market in the country… larger than Sacramento, Las Vegas, or even Nashville.
I still think it would be cool if the A’s were here for a few years, but I would still rather have them where they belong: Oakland.

Sac is still way bigger than SLC's metro region. If you start tossing on the bigger cities that are already NOT included in their metro region it grows exponentially. SLC is a small market similar to LV. Sac's metro population is 2.4m and if you start adding in more like Stockton, Fairfield, Yuba etc it grows big. Not to mention that it always has a bleed over market scenario with the Bay Area. Even Santa Rosa tunes in for their sports games via TV market. California is on a whole other level when it comes to population and TV markets. Even Fresno is a somewhat small market on its own. It's crazy...

    • @mooch2oh6
      @mooch2oh6 Před 4 měsíci +1

@@WiggleBabies That's not true at all, most people would never throw most of those cities you mentioned in with Sacramento. If you go by the Metro areas, Sacramento is bigger. But if you go by the larger CSA (combined statistical areas) they're almost the same. Actually the Salt Lake City-Provo-Orem CSA has almost 100k more residents than the Sacramento-Roseville CSA, 2.8 mil to 2.7 mil, and it's growing at a faster rate. Not to mention the fact that any team in SLC would likely be named for the entire state of Utah like the Jazz are.

I agree in practice that this will function as a trial run for MLB in either Sacramento or SLC, assuming the A's end up in one of those places. But I suspect that this is of little interest to the A's themselves, and they will ultimately be the ones who decide where to go unless MLB decides to interfere. And if they do that the A's could legitimately request that they kick in some financial support for whichever location they want. It's definitely a reason for those in the two locations who want to obtain an expansion team to give the A's a more favorable deal than they would otherwise consider, though.

@@BK_718 Short answer, they can (and always have) done what they want. They make rules, then they break them. That said...The 1958 Rule states that MLB ballpark dimensions should meet or exceed 400 feet in center field, and 325 feet in left and right field. Smith's is 345' left, 420' center, and 315' right. Too short by that measure in RF, but nothing unfixable. HOWEVER... 😃...Remember that SLC is a high altitude city. The elevation at home plate is 4,230' ASL. Not as high as Coors Field, but still noticeable differences in baseball physics. Don't know if you remember when the Colorado Rockies started playing at the old Mile High Stadium - which along with the Broncos did double duty as the minor league Bears' home. The Rockies years at Mile High were traumatic for baseball purists. Pedestrian players for the Rockies were shattering hitting records because of the really shallow LF fence at 333'. The rest of the field was huge - 366', LCF, 423' CF, 400' RCF, 370' RF - but it didn't matter. Due to the altitude and dry air the balls had afterburners on them. They built a 'green monster" in left. Didn't help. Some say the Coors Field dimensions are too short. Even with the addition of the humidor, it's still very much a hitter's park. Pitchers have a hard time because the thin air reduces baseball movement in flight and makes pitches a lot more predictable. SLC is a thousand feet lower, but the air is still thin. The Great Salt Lake adds a bit of moisture to the air, but still. Putting major league hitters in a regular sized ballpark in a dry, elevated ballpark will ruffle a lot of feathers. Can they do it. Sure! But what are the consequences?...

Great video... IMHO there may be signifiant business justifications including taxes, and "come to Utah" incentives that would likely be on the table. I think I seen somewhere that the new stadium in SLC could be expanded to 11k. What does that do to a grand opening timeline? Also the grass area in the outfield portion of Smith's ball park could be transformed into some seating if it's a must have from the MLB perspective. The biggest concern that has hampered professional sports in SLC for decades is the attendance on Sundays. The Utah Jazz limited their play on Sundays due to attendee issues. Im sure this has to be a concern for MLB and the A's. All that said, I'm 100% certain the Utah fan base would rally around MLB in SLC, and getting the 9-10K attendance that the A's recently seen in Oakland is very achievable. Utahans will LOVE affordable family experience that the MLB can provide.

This is very nice analysis from a guy who is not from Utah. Just FYI, the Daybreak area is not a city. It is a massive residential development that is part of the city of South Jordan, Utah. Daybreak is already well developed. Development started there in 2005. There are at least 20,000 people living there, maybe as many as 40 grand (hard to find latest info online), with tons of retail and commercial already there. The Miller family companies bought tons of land in Daybreak a few years ago from the prior developer and eventually started to develop a certain part of it for a new stadium with restaurants etc. The weather in Utah is no problem at all for baseball. Yeah, it gets hot in July and August, but no different from Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, etc. The Daybreak park will be beautiful. The Miller family, who used to own the Jazz, do everything top notch. People in Utah are super excited for MLB. Everyone here will become A's fans if the A's come here for 2 or 3 years. The games will all sell out for sure in the small stadium. The Miller family owns the Bees, so they can keep the Bees in their old stadium with no problem, except the city of Salt Lake is bugged that the Millers are pulling the Bees out of the city to the suburbs. And you pronounced "Wasatch" perfectly!

Just a little local clarification from your story which is vastly correct. Daybreak is a community started some 20 years back. The area and population has expanded quite a bit. It was modeled after Celebration in Florida if you're familiar with it (as a walk-able community). Why the Bee's would want to move to such a small location (capacity wise), is unknown to me but locally, the Miller Corp, and City of South Jordan have announced increasing the new Triple A ballpark by another 6,000ish seats to accommodate the A's (still probably smaller that Smith's Ballpark). The Daybreak location will not have as scenic view as Smith's due to it's proximity to the east mountain range (Wasatch - yes, you've pronounced it correctly). The city, state, and many locals are all in for MLB and the new stadium west of downtown SLC. Meanwhile those talking with the A's are looking at this partnership as a trial to the big league. We'll see. As a baseball fan who wants SLC to get MLB, yes I'd get season tickets at the drop of a hat. Going to daybreak to see the A's (not our team and leaving the market), I'd go a few times a year primarily to see other MLB teams. Smith's Ballpark is far from crumbling. It's location and views are great. With a few upgrades the bones are awesome. It was originally build with the design to allow the addition of thousands of more seating. Nonetheless if the A's could sell out at Smith's for a good number of games (even at the current capacity) I'd think they'd be happy... It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Failed to mention, Big League Utah (the coalition) isn't being driven by the city or state. It's a group (primarily the Millers), who want ownership. Not simply to host an existing team with an owner that lacks an interest in high performance competitive ball rather building a competitor team in the league from ground zero. They've already said as much.

But I am old enough to know there is nothing as complicated as local politics. I still have my doubts if the politics in Nevada will make the A's move to Las Vegas viable. As far as Utah goes, talk is cheap as are press releases. Fisher will move the A's anywhere if the money is right. If SLC can back up the talk with sweeteners, then SLC may be the A's future temporary home. As I commented in another of your videos, if SLC thinks that temporarily hosting the A's will give them a leg up in getting an expansion franchise, they should think again. Increasingly, privately-developed stadia (e.g., Atlanta, St Louis) are real estate plays, and they need land and local munipalities to pitch in. Hence South Jordan.

  • @jeffpc22
    @jeffpc22 Před 4 měsíci

Local Utahn here, I live within walking distance of where the new stadium is being built. A few important things to explain here.
The area of Smith's Ballpark is getting run-down and there is an increasing problem with the homeless population. Due to that they decided to move.
The Daybreak area is a community within the city of South Jordan. This is actually all part of the greater Salt Lake Metropolitan area, and there is currently a larger population in this area than in the direct area around Smith's Ballpark.
Well-done on saying the name of the Wasatch Mountains. And Smith's Ballpark has a majestic view of these mountains. Even though the press release claims that the Daybreak stadium will as well, all of the renderings actually show a view of the Oquirrh mountain range instead of the Wasatch Mountains, which is a little less spectacular of a view. Regardless of that, we would Welcome the A's with open arms. But a challenge that you would have in the Salt Lake market is we aren't primarily A's fans. If the Angels, Dodgers, Rockies, or D-Backs came to visit, there would probably be more fans cheering for them than the home team, as I doubt many fans are likely to switch their deep allegiances for a team that is here on a temporary basis.

Not your cookie cutter Disney bullshit daybreak fake community. No one lives out there. And of of course it’ll be newer and “nicer” but it’s not in SLC and it’s tiny and it’ll be a lot more empty than people think. Unless they turn it into a G rated Mormon fest. None of these other communities would exist if SLC didn’t take the brunt of making the salt lake valley function which does include the homeless

Here we are a few months later and we now know A's using Daybreak is not going to happen. Smith's Field opened in 1994 as Franklin Covey Field and home to the Salt Lake Buzz, AAA PCL affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. It has to be one of the most beautiful baseball setting is the country! It is so stunningly beautiful, I affectionately refer to it as "God's Field"! If I'm not mistaken it may have been designed by the architects that did Camden Yards.
Am I going to drive to Daybreak to see a game! Not likely. As a resident of SLC, I am very aware of traffic going south from about 5-7 pm! A nightmare drive and exactly when one would likely need to drive to Daybreak. I suppose if you live near the Trax line it would not as bad?
So the Miller group must really be banking on getting MLB in the Power District if they are planning on Moving the Bees to Daybreak. And certainly the Bees should get plenty of support from fans in the south end of the valley that don't have to deal with that traffic. The rest of us will go watch the MLB team!
BTW, when the team changed AAA affiliate from the Twins to the Angels, they also changed names from the Buzz (we had the Jazz, the Buzz and the Grizz) to the Stingers (the Stinkers) and later to the Bees which is the name they wanted all along (the original PCL team was the Bees) but they had been blocked from using the name by the Burlington Bees minor league team.
Yes, you are pronouncing Wasatch correctly! Thanks for another great video!

As you said the A's probably would like to avoid introducing the team to the market with 100+ losses kinds of take the luster off their grand opening in 2028. Salt Lake with the two stadiums would work best without upsetting the current PCL teams. I still don't see how Salt Lake is a legitimate candidate for MLS expansion if the A's end up in Las Vegas. Seems like two smaller remote media markets competing for fans. More jackrabbits, coyotes and rattlesnakes than people live between Salt Lake and Las Vegas.

Smith's field is also not in a very good neighborhood. It is slowly becoming gentrified but their is lots of Homeless people in the immediate area of Smiths Field and limited parking. there is TRAX which is a very good service but most people would much rather drive if there is enough parking. The South central part of the valley is much safer and would attract far more fans including myself who lives in Utah county.

7,500 MLB tickets per game in SLC would be crazy expensive. Lots of folks fly to Denver, Oakland, LA to see games. The small stadium could be an MLB market experiment in "less is more" scarcity creates value. Going to the extreme of just 7,500 seats would be quite the market experiment over a couple of years. Every seat is sold at a premium.
It is why the Utah Utes refuse to expand their stadium despite year after year of sell outs with standing room only seating selling out as well. Try getting season tickets and well, multiple year waiting list.

Salt Lake baseball fan here. Some insights:
    1) The problem with Smith’s ballpark is that the clubhouse and media facilities are really lacking. There haven’t been many upgrades in the 30 years it’s been around. It’s also in a bad neighborhood with no parking, and limited transit options.
    2) The Larry H Miller group that is pursuing MLB are also the owners of the Bees. They were also owners of the Utah Jazz until 2020. They used funds from the sale of the Jazz to buy Daybreak.
    3) as someone pointed out, the population of Salt Lake County is about 1.5 Million, but the population of the area an hour’s drive from the Daybreak stadium is closer to 2.5 million.
    4) yes, you pronounced Wasatch correctly.

Options are nice yet the biggest factor is A's ownership with John Fisher.
If / when he moves out of Oakland, he can kiss some revenue bye-bye.
A TV and radio deal will be on the almost nonexistent range. Revenue sharing? Not anymore.
Salt Lake's Smith's stadium is gorgeous, and the views are special...and yes, I saw some Bees games there.
SLC will offer Fisher a sweetheart deal 100%. I'd say it would be easier to add an extra 10,000 seats.
The LED lighting can be an easy switch over, and the clubhouses will get upgrades.
Will Las Vegas be ready in 2027? And the team can simply wear the old English A's on home and away uniforms.
Perhaps the hats could give a nod to SLC or just the same ones they wear now.
Bouncing from half a home season at the Giants and Rivercat stadiums will never see the light of day.
Plus the Giants still cling to a notion that when they received territorial rights they became true a-holes.
SLC will give Fisher time and money to be the viable alternative to Oakland. Las Vegas may come up craps.
Thanks for the informative videos Brodie! Hope you still keep up the flow of information!

I guess the thinking on the A's playing in Daybreak is that it will be a brand new stadium and facility. Even though it is baffling that a major league team would play in a stadium with only 7,500 seating capacity. Everyone would rather they play in SLC. One big reason the Bee's were moving to Daybreak is to move them out and away from the ciry so SLC can get an MLB team and a new stadium built in SLC. Daybreak us already a thriving community in South Jordan which the Larry H Miller Group purchased the rights to. It looks like they want to build that area up more. People ro come from all over the state to watch the Bee's especially on weekends and holiday's and the stadium can and will sell out. However the die hard fans in SLC are definitely disappointed on them moving out of the city. Everyone is hoping that the state and the city will land the next MLB expansion franchise.

I suppose the A's can borrow from soccer and call themselves Athletics Baseball Club while they're in a temporary home so they one, don't have to identify with a particular city, and two, make a splash christining the Las Vegas A's when they eventually get there.
Minor league parks wherever situated are always going to be much smaller than MLB parks so revenue streams will be adversely affected no matter where they locate. If SLC gives the A's the best deal and lowers their cost of doing business then I'm sure that will be enticing for Fisher. Player payroll will not be increasing anytime soon for the A's because they just aren't going to have the revenues to be able to afford it absent Fisher digging into his and minority owners' pockets to fund any increases. And that seems doubtful given Fisher's history. Vegas will be getting in '28 or later a pauper of a franchise so the A's and MLB's marketing departments will have to work overtime to make sure their arrival will be seen in the most positive light. Of course, watching shovels in the ground and cranes in the air will whet the appetites of baseball fans in the Vegas area. There's always something about a stadium or arena under construction that excites people regardless of a team's history. Shovels and cranes translate as "hope", and that goes a long way.

I feel like if the A's do 81 games in either SAC or SLC, they'll take on the name of their temporary home for the duration. Compare when the NBA moved their team out of New Orleans for a year or two; they were the "NOK" team whose nickname I can't remember.

Wouldn't it make more sense for the A's to play in the larger (Smith's) ballpark and have the Bees move to their new stadium?

@@HHSGDFootballJPDI believe the Padres and Angels were minor league teams that imported their name to the MLB team

SLC metro area is not 1.25 million. It is more like 2.7 million. The 1.25 million is only Salt Lake County. We have several other outskirts that continue beyond Salt Lake County to the north and to the south, and it is one continuous metro area of about 2.7 million. More than double the 1.25 that people keep saying. We are plenty big enough to support a MLB team. We are also the only option the A's have where they would not have to share a stadium with another team. that eliminates a scheduling nightmare for MLB.

With current ownership that 7500 yard is par for the course. A’s need new ownership period.
