    You got off to a slow start, but when you got rolling it was terrific. It was a clear explanation of the circuits involved and helps a lot in troubleshooting a thermostat problem. Nice work and thank you.

      I am about to open the cover on a unit;
      I worked up to setting the condenser myself without supervision but did not become proficient - zero time actually - at any of the inside of the unit; I installed 4-wire mechanical T-Stat per *Terry's* directions; He has many decades doing this and now works at LP - which is a fast-paced major shop in the county so he knows his stuff;
      We robbed the T-Stat from a building to get tenant's area heated;
      I hooked up 3 of the wires by unmistakable color-code and there was only one wire left so I attached it then failed to pull cardboard cover for shipping which I did on a call-back then tried the fan and the blower came on but I get hot customer
      ( he is a contractor ~ worked at BMW shop and has his own mechanical tools )
      telling me the unit is not heating;
      I have emailed the supplier with PN's to get a wiring diagram but looks to be a very common style of the era prior to "heat pumps"
      I have ¼-million hours with only one scar so I can open the unit in relative safety - it is dangling wires that I did not install so I have to be x-tra careful not to break anything that is working and can really use your oversight;

    Starting school for this soon. So safe to say that if the furnace doesn't run. Check W to C and if you have 24 vilts. Then that means the stats good. No 24 Volts from W to C and stats bad? as long as there's 24 v from R to C.

    The green wire is for the air handler unit fan motor relay only, the yellow wire is for the outside condenser unit.
    The yellow wire energizes the compressor contactor, the fan motor is conected in the same contact.
    If the compressor works,but the fan motor fails, the capacitor may be damaged,defective,or the fan motor may have an open winding, most common problem with an old fan motor is the capacitor.

    This is a great explanation, thanks for this. Two questions for you -- 1). I have two wires in my thermostat (W and Rh) and a jumper between Rh and Rc. Why is the jumper there, what purpose does it serve? (Heat only steam boiler) And, 2). If I wanted to use a Nest thermostat, would I simply need to upgrade to a 3-wire and connect C from thermostat to C on the boiler's electrical box?

I needed to figure out the C=common wire did and how to work around it to giv eto the thermostat. what is wrong is that the Smart thermostat does not need power via the C wire but instead a negative.... once you find that out that hooking it up is easy. thank you again Sir. also I know now how the trigger for the AC works. great stuff

    I saw your video, it was really helpful and I was thinking that maybe with your knowledge you could help me with my problem.
    Do you have any idea if I could connect two thermostats on a single stage heating and cooling?
    My idea is to install one tsat downstairs and one upstairs to have the chance to select (via software or at least a manual switch) which thermostat to be in charge of the HVAC.
    For your information I have just one manual damper (which closes or open the up floor duct), so the idea is not to do a zoning but to have control of the temperature on the floor I am regardless what the temperature is on the other floor.
    Just as an example to be clear: If ambient temperature is 18°C and I'm using downstairs tstat (with set point 20°C), upstairs will be 25°C but the system should continue working. Only the downstair tstat should lead.
    By the way, I'm from Argentina and I have already bought 2 Honeywell WiFi - RTH6580WF on a trip to USA (here are really really expensive!)
    Please let me know if I'm not clear enough.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

    I have an electronic ignition fireplace that ignites a pilot. It has a control module . it has multiple connections coming from remote control receiver, battery relay, and a battery pack. The control module has two connections labeled pilot connectors. Labeled I and S on the wiring diagram. I want to install a thermostat like on a heating unit. It seems I need to connect the thermostat to the control module at I and S terminals to send a signal to light the pilot. Am I in the ballpark on this?

  • @jotu173

    Please clarify... at 4:47 did you MEAN TO SAY... so when you call for heat, the thermostat will send out voltage W & G? (heat AND BLOWER/FAN?) I am an amateur, so this is a REAL question, not a smart remark. FYI I'm not sure if this matters, but I am asking in reference to a gas furnace. It just seems like common sense that it would call for the W & blower also (just like it does when set for AC). Your fast reply on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    I have a Honeywell thermostat with 4 wires connected with two batteries in the thermostat. The C terminal is not connected. Is it true that if I connect the C terminal to the transformer inside the air handler control panel I would not need the batteries to run the thermostat. As is the batteries have to be replaced constantly. How does one connect the C terminal to avoid using the batteries. The thermostat controls AC outside unit, heating blower inside unit, and the fan.

    Great video to understand the low voltage side. I an working on a heat pump that is not pulling in the contactor on the outdoor condenser unit when calling for cooling. I have a few things I'm scratching my head about. 1. I am getting 30V from the (R) Red and C (Common) it is a 24 Volt system, does this mean my transformer needs replaced? 2. When I check the W (White) to C (Common) when asking for cooling I am only getting 15V and it is also showing 15V when not asking for cooling (turn thermostat above room temperature). Is there something I am missing? Thanks for all your help so far.

    • @kevinroberts781
      @kevinroberts781 Před 5 lety

      the 24v transformer will produce a voltage between 24v-30v. That is normal and most produce around 28v AC. If you measure the voltage across 2 points and only get 15v that tells me you are only seeing voltage from 1 side of the transformer (either R or C. Most likely R side). You need the relay in the thermostat to make the connection on G,Y,W ect to C in order to get a complete 24V connection. When that takes place, the 24 volt relays will switch on and supply 110/220 vac to the outside unit/inside fan/heat strip depending. I am not a HVAC tech. I just love everything electric and worked on it from 9 years old until age 39. Very fun stuff!

    Great video Guy.. I do have a question that I cant seem to figure out why my new Goodman MVC96 furnace blower fan shuts off as soon as I switch the thermostat to cool mode but the condenser does start up fine. Because of no blower fan circulation the TXV and service port start freezing up immediately so I cant even get to setting sub cooling . I have the 2 condenser wires hooked to Y & C on the furnace control board but when set the thermostat to cool it shut off the blower fan. Blower fan also wont run in the ON or Auto position when set to cool but does work in heat and fan only mode.??? Any suggestions would be great. thanks

    How would a thermostat without a Common terminal receive electricity in order to send signals out back to the circuit board? Simply battery power? Or are there old analog ones that use some type of different metals that generate a small amount of voltage?

      Yes, if it has batteries, it uses the energy from battery to energize relay(s) inside thermostat to connect R 24vAC to desired terminal (function). The old thermostats used contact switches filled with mercury that are conductive.
