Perp in Stolen BMW Leads Police on Wild Chase

- Police Report: On September 18, 2023, the Alachua County Sheriff's Office received information that a stolen vehicle, taken during a homicide (see ACSO CR#23-008205), was reportedly traveling northbound on US HWY 441, entering Alachua County. The vehicle was described as a 2013 gold BMW four-door sedan bearing the Florida tag Al65GL.
Deputies moved into position to intercept this vehicle along US HWY 441. Eventually, deputies began following the vehicle around the area of 13300 US HWY 441 northbound, where they confirmed that the FL TAG was the same, ensuring that this vehicle was, in fact, the stolen vehicle at large. After following the vehicle for a distance great enough to have several deputies in the area, deputies activated the emergency lights on their patrol vehicles.
Several attempts to use Stop Sticks along US HWY 441 were unsuccessful as the driver, later identified as the defendant, Javon Stephon Barclay, drove around the sticks and into the median to avoid them. At that time, the pursuing deputies ensured that their emergency lights and sirens were active on their patrol vehicles, which are prominently marked with the ACSO insignia and jurisdictional markings. It was clear, through the defendant's actions of speeding away and attempting to elude law enforcement, that he did not intend to stop.
Eventually, the defendant was stopped by the utilization of a PIT maneuver. After following orders to exit the driver's seat of the stolen vehicle, the defendant was arrested at the scene of the PIT maneuver and transported to Shands Emergency Room for medical issues stemming from his apprehension.
A criminal history revealed that the defendant has an active warrant out of Marion County regarding Assault with a Deadly Weapon (No Bond). Additionally, he was found to have 13 previous suspensions of his FL Driver's License out of Marion and Hernando County. The most recent three suspensions are indefinite out of Marion County, dating 1/31/22, 10/03/22, and 06/05/23.
The defendant is charged with Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement as well as DWLSR (3rd or subsequent).

So, as a genuine expert, I can safely say you don't need to be an expert to understand you should not attempt a PIT when there is such risk immediately up ahead.

That area has bike lanes because U.S. 441connects the U. of Florida (Gainesville) with the university recreation on Lake Wauberg, 10 miles south. Beautiful state park and and Payne's Prairie viewing area in between. Bike traffic is significant and frequently well over and separate from motor vehicle lanes.

@@bloopnation As soon as you intentionally engage in reckless criminal activities like running from the cops, insurance typically stops paying for any damages, so it does matter. More to the point: if someone doesn't want their car to get damaged, they really shouldn't flee from law enforcement to start with, since those LEOs are probably going to try to stop them by putting them into a wall or a ditch. Fleeing from LEOs simply gives them opportunity and a reason to do just that.

around here, ins companies have sometimes refused to pay up if police report states the keys were in the car.
Alachua County is a sheriff's department you don't want to mess around with. I've seen a number of pursuits involving this department and they're bound to ram and PIT fleeing vehicles. I like getting to see videos of the department's twin turbo F-150 interceptors in action.

And yeah, while following behind a tractor trailer and other heavy loads it's important to leave more than a car length of distance due to hazards, along with the truck driver being able to see you through their side view mirrors.
@@devenmellor I feel you about the other vehicles in the left lane. I'm accustomed to driving on the most heavily traveled stretch of I-95 and find stupid drivers putzing along in the center and inner left lanes, which also includes tractor trailers and other heavy duty vehicles driving right alongside another heavy duty vehicle, causing annoyance and lines of traffic. If I'm not in a rush, I sometimes get off the highway and take major roads and back roads to make the driving easier.

I was just thinking about that. No one in control of consistently stating the suspect vehicles lane of travel coming up on the spike strips. When the suspect turned south, it took about twenty seconds for someone to say something different than "turned around" and actually call out the direction of travel. The pickup truck cut off the primary, and then hugged the center line making cooperation more difficult. The PIT that ended it was damn close to a couple of parked cars, risking the lives of people that were just trying to be out of the way.
I am by no means a law enforcement officer, but if I can see this, I wonder what someone who actually knows what they are talking about thinks when they see this.
Ever seen young kids play soccer, basketball, etc? All running after the ball with no cooperation or coordination. That's what this made me think of.

Insurance. It would be less the owner's deductible. They would then look to subrogate the loss against the criminal if they feel it is worthwhile. Likely, the person will the ordered to pay restitution by the court.
