USB-C to 3.5mm Mic Adapters - DJI Osmo Action 3 & Action 4 Owners watch THIS for better audio!

  • There is so much confusion around the DJI Osmo Action 3 and how to connect an external 3.5mm microphone. Some people suggest cheap USB-C to TRRS adapters while others insist using a TRS adapter. But which cable really provides the best audio quality when connecting a mic to your Action 3? And why does TRRS / TRS even matter? Watch this video to find out!
    DISCLAIMER: The Digital/ Analog TRS/TRRS concept can take A LOT longer than 5 minutes to fully understand. This video is intended for other DJI Action 3 Owners who simply want to know which USB-C to 3.5mm adapter they should buy for their mic.
    If you're microphone has a TRRS connector, I would suggest a TRRS to TRS Adapter (like the RODE SC3) and then into a BOYA BY-K4.

    Thank you for posting this. I've been testing all my adapters (USB-C to 3.5mm TRRS/TRS) with no luck on the Action 4. I have an Osmo Pocket 2 and had purchased the DJI USB-C to 3.5mm Pocket Adapter, which proved to only be compatible with the Pocket series and not the Action series. No clue why that would be...but hope others don't make the same mistake and buy the DJI product hoping that works. Was nearly about to purchase the new DJI adapter for the Action series USB-C to 3.5mm, albeit the design is sweet and square shaped sitting on the side of the Action 4, it is 4 times the price as the Boya adapter. Interestingly enough, the wireless mic I am trying to use is the Boya wireless mic system, but did not know about this Boya adapter. Just ordered it and should arrive tomorrow, hopefully, as our trip is this weekend. Will post a confirmation that this adapter functions with the Action 4 & Boya wireless mics. Cheers!

    Very well explained difference between TRS and TRRS. I bought DJI Osmo 4 and I'm looking for a good setup for motovlogging. Generally, the sound of the engine means more to me than my speech, but for now, I don't have a clear idea of how to do it without having a hundred cables and accessories. First, I'll look for the Osmo Action 3.5mm Audio Adapter, which I think is designed for motorcyclists. As for recording two separate audio channels, I'll have to figure that out later.

    I have two questions though:
    1.: Would it work to connect the TRSTRRS cable with any other 3.5mmUSB-C DAC adapter?
    And 2.: what's your opinion on investing in a Rode VideoMic Go II and connecting directly via USB-C to the Osmo Action 3?

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  Před rokem +1

      Hi, thanks for your comment! To answer your questions:
      1) There is a wide variety of success when using TRRS to USB-C and/or TRS to TRRS adapters or any variations on these. A lot depends on the design of the 3.5mm to USB-C adapter. If it's a mic adapter, I've successfully used a TRRS mic into a TRRS to TRS adapter into the BY-K4. However, using some kind of TRRS to USB-C adapter instead, may not transmit the full audio signal. I think that answers your question?
      2) While I like the VideoMic GO II, if you're looking to invest ~$100 USD, I'd seriously look at the new Deity V-Mic D4. It retails at $99 and has a USB-C output & a gain knob on the mic for more control. It also comes with better wind protection. Check out this video for my experience with it: czcams.com/video/I28Kq0k1-ZQ/video.html
      Personally, when it comes to how the Action 3 handles audio, I've discovered you're much better off using a mic that has some kind of gain control as the Action 3's gain seems to be more of a digital volume control than and analog gain control.

  • @MichaelBabich
    @MichaelBabich Před rokem +1

    USB-C spec natively supports analog audio. So, there is no need in a converter "inside a cable". I'd say it depends more on cable quality and whether it supports transmission of analog audio from/to USB-C. Normally, a device that supports smart USB-C with analog audio has all the required converters and just need for the cable to deliver the analog audio to USB-C.

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  Před rokem +1

      Hey Michael! Thanks for your comment! While USB-C can deliver analog audio, I don't think the Action 3 has the capability to accept and convert it via the USB-C port. Even though USB-C was meant to make everything easier and universal, there is so much diverse functionality that it can be super confusing (& frustrating). I personally think that digital audio via USB-C is the future (almost forced by phone manufacturers) and that eventually camera manufacturers will jump on board, much like DJI has done.

      Thanks for your comment! While I don't have a Hero 9/10, I don't think any 3rd party USB-C to 3.5mm TRS mic adapters will work on a GoPro. I've tried them with my Hero 8 and it's a no go. Even though GoPros have a USB-C port, they are not enabled to accept USB mics or generic adapters. As is the case, GoPro makes you buy their proprietary MediaMods or their 3.5mm adapter dongle/brick. This is actually the primary reason I bought the Action 3 over the Hero 11.

    The aftermath 4 months after...
    I did buy a Boya BY-K4 after watching your video. Thanks for the recommendation. It works well.
    However, there's a "traditional" problem when I'm filming my phone or action cam like Sony RX0 with any external mic, the noise level rises drastically when I stop talking. It is obvious that these tiny electronic gadgets were trying to maintain the gain level by "compensating" the silence continuously. This didn't happen when I was using the internal mic of my cellphone.
    And yesterday I got my Saramonic SR-EA2U, which is a simple USB Type-C audio for phones. The sound quality is just as good. Yet there's no such sharp increase of noise level in the silent part of recording. This reminds me of you saying digital input can be the future trend.
    I was just wondering... have you ever experienced such problem of higher noise level in silent parts of recording with external mic? For me, it's almost universal. This still happened even when I connect the Rodecaster Pro II with Sony ZV-1 (not as serious as in other cases). Of course, I know to switch off the auto-level functionality of these devices. Yet that keeps bugging me somehow. Digital input could be really better in this respect.

      I wish to record videos on a smartphone(iPhone or Android) or camera(DSLR-like) with professional audio connecting the newly purchased ‘iRig PRE 2’ which has a 3.5mm output jack that goes into the earphones or mic port of a smartphone or camera. But nowadays smartphones and cameras have type C port input so what type of 3.5mm to typeC converter can I use? Please.
      Does the Apple original and Samsung original adapter with DAC chip inside work with any smartphone and any camera?

    I realize this video is for the DJI camera but for people using a smartphone it might be a bit confusing to call the TRRS cable itself "garbage" because that's what they will need. It's not a garbage cable, it's just for a different device.
    For that matter if they have a lav mic or several other camera mics I can think of they need the TRRS to USB-C cable even into the DJI camera.

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  Před rokem +1

      Thanks as always for your comment! Lol, I suppose "garbage" is a little harsh and I apologize to any cable that I might have offended. Though buyer beware, if you do need a USB-C to 3.5mm TRRS headphone adapter, they are not all created equal and inexpensive ones may be prone to eventual failure.
      And thanks for bringing up Mics with TRRS connectors. In those cases, I'd still advise against inexpensive USB-C to 3.5mm TRRS headphone adapters as they aren't designed to function that way. Instead, I recommend a TRRS female to TRS male adapter (like the RODE SC3) and then into something like the BY-K4. While I didn't show it in this video, the MKE200 with it's TRRS cable into the SC3 then BY-K4 produced clean audio. Alternatively, though I haven't personally tested it, I surmise the BOYA BY-K9 is also an option which is a TRRS female to USB-C male adapter specifically designed for Mics with TRRS connectors and smartphone USB-C ports.

    Thx for the video. Just picked up an Action 4. So, the adapter and the mic cable have to be TRS yes? You can't use a TRRS adapter with a TRS mic cable because of the ADC circuitry in the adapter. But, can you use a TRS Boya adapter with a trrs mic cable? Also, I have several lav mics that are TRS, is there a way to use these with my USB-C iPad? Cheers.

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  Před rokem

      Thanks for your questions! While I can't speak to ipad use, you actually can use a lav mic that has a TRRS male end. You would need (yet) another adapter like a RODE SC3 which would turn your TRRS mic into a TRS mic and then connect that to a BOYA BY-K4 adapter. Even though inexpensive USB-C headphone adapters are meant for TRRS cables, you're right in that they are not designed for TRRS mics. It's can be confusing as it seems like matching up like connectors should work, but the internal circuitry and the physical metal connections (of TRRS plugs & jacks) don't necessarily match.

    This reminds me of an interesting question. A lot of consumer-level wireless or shotgun mics (such as Saramonic Blink 500 or Comica CVM-VM20) will provide us with both TRS-TRS and TRS-TRRS cables right in the box, claiming that their products can work perfectly with both cameras and phones. I was wondering whether it makes difference in sound quality between using the included TRS-TRRS cable and TRRS-Type C adapter and using a TRS-TRS cable and TRS-Type C adapter like Boya BY-K4.
    This question is making sense to me especially when I'm trying to use an external audio interface such as Zoom H5 and direct the audio signal to my phone. Your video makes me consider buying a Boya BY-K4 for a test. I'm also thinking about buying something like RODE AI-Micro. However, the capability of using an high-quality XLR mic is always inviting. 😃

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  Před rokem +1

      OK, so I think I understand what you're asking. Here are my thoughts and things I've tested myself (though anyone can feel free to jump in and correct/clarify anything if I'm off base):
      Historically, TRS & TRRS at a basic level are just two different ways to conduct a signal (TRS using a Tip/Ring/Sleeve in our case to send a Left/Right/Ground & TRRS using Tip/Ring/Ring/Sleeve to send (in our case) Left/Right/Ground/Mic. When I mic comes with both TRS/TRS & TRS/TRRS cables (like the MKE200) the TRS/TRRS is simply a cable that physically re-routs a TRS signal to a TRRS so that devices (like mobile phones that have 3.5mm TRRS jacks) can properly interpret the signal (TRRS jacks typically are expecting 4 different lines which is why typically TRS cables won't work, although today, some smart ports/cables can differentiate and adjust to accommodate both).
      When a mic is plugged into a Smartphone via the TRS to TRRS cable, the mic is sending an Analog audio signal to the phone which then internally does the digital conversion. So the phone is doing the work. Older phones with 3.5mm jacks ALSO had the ability to SEND audio that was converted digitally internally OUT as an analog signal to things like headphones. The "magic" of TRRS was that in addition to sending out Left/Right/Ground (TRR) then could also receive Mic (S). This was to enable users to make phone calls and hear and speak to the caller.
      Now things got all messed up when phone manufacturers stopped putting 3.5mm TRRS jacks in their phones and instead only had a USB-C port. Now, there needed to be USB-C to TRRS dongles to enable users to make calls with wired headsets. But these dongles didn't function the same way as "built-in 3.5mm jacks" and because smartphones had video capabilities, the desire to be able to input a (typical) TRS mic necessitated dongles like the BY-K4 which ensures the analog to digital conversion.
      Now, when it comes down to your actual question (I think), audio quality really depends on the quality of the Analog to Digital Converter. When we're talking about recording into our phones, I have an older Samsung Galaxy S10. It has a USB-C port AND (still) a 3.5mm TRRS jack on the bottom. I also have a Comica VM-10 PRO which came with a TRS/TRS cable, a TRS/TRRS cable & a USB-C to USB-C cable. I'm able to record on my Android phone on an app called RecForge II successfully in 3 different ways:
      - The VM-10 PRO (analog out) via TRS/TRRS cable into my phone's 3.5mm jack
      - The VM-10 PRO (analog out) via TRS/TRS cable into the BOYA BY-K4 into my phone's USB-C port
      - The VM-10 PRO (digital out) via USB-C to USB-C to my phone's USB-C port
      When listening back on my studio monitors, the Digital USB-C to USB-C sounds ever so slightly better, but they basically all sound similar. I also tested the mic with the USB-C to TRRS headphone adapter in this video with the included TRS/TRRS cable and it sounded... well, like garbage lol!
      But to get to your real question (lol), when it comes to something like an interface or external Zoom recorder, I've been able to successfully send audio from my Zoom H6 to my phone in 3 different ways. The first is putting the Zoom H6 into Audio Interface mode (PC/Mac Battery Powered) and connecting the H6 to my phone via a Mini USB to USB-C cable. This allowed me to use the X/Y capsule and also any of the 4 XLR inputs. BUT, in Audio Interface mode, I could not record internally on the Zoom H6.
      The 2nd method which did allow for internal H6 recording was to use a TRS/TRS cable from the H6 Line Out into the BOYA BY-K4 into the USB-C port of my phone.
      And the 3rd method was using the Line Out from the H6 with a TRS/TRRS cable to the 3.5mm jack of my phone.
      Again all 3 methods sounded similar though it seemed that the Audio Interface mode was ever so slightly cleaner. So I guess the bottom line is the best audio quality comes from whichever device is doing the Analog Digital Conversion the best and/or what kind of functionality you're ultimately looking for!

    Hi, with the Boya adapters being out of stock for many of us, after watching this video, I can say that the Saramonic SR-C2003 definitely works. I have done a video showing my new setup in a motovlogging situation. I had to put an in line volume control to soften the the mic’s output, as the audio was heavily distorted at speeds over 45mph. Wayne mentioned, there might be a future update, which would rectify this, I do hope he is right.

    • @gigihanmandarin

      Distortion is due to wind noise. You need to find a position for the mic where the wind noise does not bother the audio (try the cutout area for bluetooth earpiece), or switch to a full face helmet with better wind resistance.

      @@tonyfowler3846 true, but beggars can’t be choosers. I am happy enough with my audio now, up to about 55mph, provided the bike I am riding doesn’t have a screen fitted. Dealing with the buffeting is a nightmare, I just don’t bother trying. Ultimately, a wireless mic system would be the way to go, but from what I have seen/heard, for moto vlogging, the audio is too sterile.

    Thanks for this very useful video! Would you have any recommendation which mic I would need for the following environment: I want to record within sports cars a very native sound of the noises (especially of course engine and exhaust noises). So I assume it should be omnidirectional? But I should also be capable of handling loud noises? And "of course" I don't want to pay too much 😉

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  Před rokem

      Hi, thanks for your comment! For something like your situation, I'd recommend you start with considering recording your audio in 32-bit float (as opposed to 24-bit or 16-bit). 32-bit float will give you the ability to record a normal environment and also extremely loud (or sudden or unexpectedly loud) sounds (like engine and exhaust noise).
      With regards to mics, you'd likely want to prioritize one with a higher SPL (sound pressure level) to accommodate those louder sounds. While an omnidirectional pattern seems ideal, depending on how you're shooting your video in the car (camera placement) and where you are mounting your microphone, something like a stereo mic could give you some nice directional sounds.
      Factoring overall cost, the new Zoom M3 MicTrak might be your best option. It is a 32-bit float recorder with a built in mic that can be switched between a mono pattern to a wide stereo recording (and comes in at $200 USD). While mine is en route, I do plan on making some videos about it after a bit of testing.
