Absolutely fantastic video. The weaving of the music, the images, the written page, the illustrations, and your flawless (no apology necessary for the accent) readings of Twain, brought new appreciation for Huck and Tom's adventures. The historical perspective of the Barlow knife, was just icing on the cake.

I realise you made this video a long time ago, but I’ve only just watched it. I really enjoyed it and it’s inspired me to re-read Tom and Huck’s adventures. I last read them nearly 40 years ago, but I carry a Sheffield made, Taylor’s Eye Witness Barlow every day.

I have to admit I never really paid attention to the dates of upload until you mentioned it, but I can see you have changed the visual style a little, but you have a consistent quality. I don't collect knives myself, but I think they are fascinating and very probably mankind's first true invention, and I really love history and your cultural references and the considerable amount of detective work you put into your chosen subject. I know as a collector knives are your thing, and they make an excellent 'McGuffin', but I strongly suspect you would have a knack for making anything you are interested in interesting. Brilliant work, Stefan! It's an addictive channel.

The musician who opens with "Shady Grove" on this most informative video, Doc Watson, passed away today. RIP, Doc.
It's my impression that when Mark Twain refers to the "loafers" whittling with their barlow knives, he's commenting on the mens' commonness. In my experience, Barlow knives were general-purpose knives suitable only for children or adolescents. By adulthood, most people acquired one or more specialized knives, depending on their occupations. By mentioning that these grown men were (still) using barlow knives, Twain is subtly commenting on their prospects in life. Of course, I could be wrong.

I've watched this video many times, your accent reminds me of my Grandfather, he also had a great love for both Mark Twain, and the Barlow knife, which is in my very own knife collection to this day, the knife being some 60 plus years old,, He migrated with my father from East Berlin to the US in 1958, but he never lost his accent,

@@StefanSchmalhaus It was an ulster made in USA, I beilieve it was purchased around 1960's it along with his pocket watch were always in his pockets if he wasn't sleeping or taking a bath, he used to say those were the only times a man should be without either Item,

mark twain was a genius. he had such a sense of humor. you can see it in his novels. my first knife was a plastic handled schrade i think with two blades. a clip point and a pen blade. i broke the tip off the main blade in the basement wall practicing my throwing skills. i think my brother still has it. i hope so anyway. ill get another one day.

'The Famous Brothers' wrote a song all about a knife, appropriately titled 'Swiss Army Knife'. I used a part of the song in my Vic Solo review.
I couldn't help but watch the whole vid. Your vids are always so interesting. A couple years ago I saw Hal Holbrook in 'Mark Twain Tonight!' with my grandfather. It was pretty cool to see such an impersonator.

The first knife I was allowed to purchase with my own money was an Imperial Barlow. The local hardware store sold them next to the cash register for $1.99. The clip point seemed especially wicked and designed for stabbing.
I was stabbing a tree trunk when the main blade snapped shut on my index finger. I probably should have had stitches, but trip to the doctor would certainly have nixed my knife privileges. So we kids patched it up with tape and played it cool until it healed. Nobody noticed
I’ve still got a scar on my palm from my first knife shutting on it. Taped it up then superglued it back together at the house. Nobody noticed mine either. Time is a flat circle I suppose.

I went to one of the last concerts by Doc Watson a true southern gentleman his passing was sad. I received as most boys at that 6 or -so a pocket knife. I had a Kabar trapper my buddy a Barlow those some matches and a .22 rifle we were ready for anything mostly fun

It's sad that a lot of Americans don't respect their history as much as other people respect our history.
I've ordered a couple Case Barlows as they will soon "disappear back into the vault." Hopefully Case will devote a little time to the finishing of these special revivals instead of today's unfortunate sloppy grinds, bad centering, blade rub and uneven cover finishing. I'm not holding my breath as 50% of my Case collection is not held to standards of what Case used to be, but that said, to my knowledge these Case Barlows are only rivalled by GEC-- which are at least double the price (or triple on the secondary market). Case finishing is worlds ahead of other such offerings from Schrade or Imperial, but GEC is worlds ahead of Case (if you have exclusive knowledge and reserve your knife as soon as GEC thinks of secretly making the 5 knives they come out with every 13 years)...

It should me noted that during the 19th century in America any inexpensive small folding knife was often called a "Barlow" knife regardless of the actual pattern or manufacturer of it. The style that we know today as a Barlow knife was not established until the 1920's.
No, the pattern was already established before then, though the name had become synonymous with small affordable pocket knives during the 1920s.
Another good video I love history especially american history, nice touch connecting a knife to classic american novels.
Man I'm loving these traditional folder reviews. As much as I like the modern designs there's jsut something special when using one of those timeless classics
The stag handle is awesome! Case just reissued the Barlow this year (2019), and I ordered one in the yellow synthetic handle--which I like, but I don't think it equals the stag. The Barlow I ordered has two blades, the clip and a small pen blade.

There is an old American fiddle tune called "Barlow Knife," and you can find versions of it on CZcams. It has three parts, with a verse to be sung to each: "I've been a-fiddling all my life, and all I've got is a Barlow Knife." "Barlow handle and a Barlow blade, best old knife that ever was made." "You can take my dog, you can take my wife, but you can't take my Barlow knife."

@stschmalhaus Yes it is. Its a show where people bring in antiques and the historians/experts on that item appraise it. Its pretty cool!

ich hab als jugendlicher auch die Mark Twail bücher auf deutsch gelesen, erinnere mich aber nicht daran, dass von einem Barlowmesser im text die rede war.
weisst du, ob das bei der übersetzung ins deutsche verschwunden ist, oder ich mich mich nur nicht mehr erinnern kann?
Das kann ich nicht beantworten, weil ich mich ebenfalls nicht mehr erinnere. Es ist aber so, dass früher viele Klassiker, die als vermeintliche Jugendbücher galten, in den Übersetzungen für Jugendliche gekürzt und in der Sprache vereinfacht wurden. Dabei fiel so manches Detail unter den Tisch.

Barlow is NOT an American knife. It was first made by Obadiah Barlow in Sheffield England in 1665. He opened a factory there in 1670, and the Barlow knife is still being made there today. And that factory still makes the most beautiful Barlow knife in the world.
The Barlow knife was exported to America by a representative of Obadiah Barlow not too many years after he opened his factory, and the knife was a big hit here, but the Barlow was not, and is not, an American knife.

@mrmonkeyman50 its not weather they know grammar its the fact that the internet has always been informal due to they laziness of typing. i grant there are a few who dont know but majority especially in america read tom sawyer and huck fin when they were in elementary school. and now as a 15 year old's perspective you dont have to learn anymore it used to be learn or sleep and get detention/hit now its learn or text and play games on your iphone during class. motivation is the problem.

Did you read my last comment? I said that due to the informality of the Internet, grammar is typically not proper. I do believe that I should be worrying about my peers motivation, seeing as I have to cooperate with them as a community in the near future. I would also say I do have motivation due to the fact I am trying to persuade others to take their culture seriously. Thus making your sense or irony questionable. By the way Tom Sawyer is 5th grade reading level and a part of most curriculums.

@mrmonkeyman50 i am clean i am a former German current American in an American public school system located in the American heartland where the curriculum is as required 2 novels a year in a high school English class with 4 years of English classes to be accepted into any state college and i do have memories of not that long ago when i was forced to read TomSawyer in 5th grade then forced to read the Giver in 6th grade which was a little harder but still comprehensible if you wanted to learn
