man, you can always count on zappa to give an intelligent, eloquent, and dryly, subtly hilarious interview. and you know, demento is a big dork with canned questions, but he's genuine and doesn't get offended by frank - he's all right!
1:44 "When you think of the mechanics of film distribution, you have the same problem in getting good ideas onto the screen as you have in getting good ideas on television or even good ideas on the radio. You really can't do it. You can't even get good ideas in the newspaper. If you have a good idea, keep it to yourself. This is America, folks."
Frank was so ahead of his time. His music is not for everyone but I have many of his best works.Joes Garage ....by far is my fave.....His son Dwezil has his dads talents ...He died way before his time..........RIP Frank
This was fantasic, thank you for posting! I remember discovering Dr Demento and Zappa audio cassettes at my public library when I was a kid and I knew I stumbled on a goldmine. Still a massive fan almost 30 years later.
Frank is one thoughtful and intense dude. I wish he were still around.... his voice is sorely missed in these (still messed up) times. ...He definitely should have mentioned the name of the animator on baby snakes, Bruce Bickford, an insanely talented artist in his own right.
Zappa so serious as an artist (realistic, cynical, political), the good Dr. somehow keeps a straight face with fabulous dry humour and sarcasm that it makes me cry with laughter. This said, I need to buy a top had like Dr. D. Zappa does throw such philosphical zingers such as, "you only meet great disappointments when you have great expectations."
I guess he changed his mind about what he said at the end of the interview, which makes me happy. Seeing him on tv lambasting the religious right was very entertaining and I think it did have an effect to embarrass them and open them to wider ridicule that they didn't expect and didn't enjoy much.
How do you think he would have felt about Ilhan Omar and and Occasional Cortex? Frank was a Free Speech person. The modern Left is anything but. If comedians can’t go on College campuses, how do you think Frank Zappa would have fared?
Oh dear: Zappa nails it again. Yes, movies were a party with an expense account - if it made money, great. If not... Hollywood always had people lined up. Glad he had a good time, cause we sure did.
when was this interview ?..Demento is great...he did a Zappa panel at Worldcon in Reno, Nevada 2011..that's where I discovered Zappa for the first time..I knew his name but not the music or personna ..thx to Demento for introducing me to this legend ..
Dr.D. is simply doing his zig zag best to bring Frank to a Straight audience. Interviews are not easy, the best (like Terri Gross) make it sound laid back and easy, but it isn't. She gets to cut out the "uhs" and the "uhms:" and other non-essentials that the Doc has to live with here. Good Stuff to see the Raw in action!
It seems like the early 80s was about the last time anyone remotely avant-garde or experimental could get on network TV (even late night) for this length of time. (Laurie Anderson was on network TV a lot, too).
I LOVE Dr. Demento, but he appears like he's going to shit his pants in this interview. I keep waiting for him to ask "Uhm, member when you were with the Mothers of Invention? Remember that?" ;-)
@pinkypalmerosvideos what do you mean by "throwback"? That WAS back in the day and most likely he WAS a hippie, which is nothing whatsoever to be ashamed of.
Americans are kinda like us Canadians as I see it Individualy awsome as hell even the guys that are going to plook the hell out of me for this comment. But as the Moral Majority we all need a lot of work I just wish guys like F.Z and G.C were still around to help guide us to our faults and make us laugh along the way.Thats what I look for in an entertainer.

He used to cut the grass, he was a very nice boy.
Being a huge fan of Dr. Demento and Frank Zappa, this was a real treat to discover, and thanx for posting!!

"...and to have great expectations in your fellow man in a place like this, has got to lead to heartbreak and remorse."
The man was a genius.
And everything he said (especially at the end) WAS right and still IS right.
I always liked the Dr. Demento show on the radio. And, of course I like all of Zappa's music!
Thanks for posting this.
Zappa had great delivery.
Dr. Demento was disturbingly twitchy throughout and listened with his mouth open.
There's where his ears be
Zappa seems thrilled to be there.
nice interview, thanks!
Awesome interview. I particularly loved the bit about cynicism. Thanks.
oh my god i love frank so much, what a wise guy
That could explain EVERYTHING!
If we just had Jerry Falwell and President Reagan to worry about these days...
I guess he changed his mind about what he said at the end of the interview, which makes me happy. Seeing him on tv lambasting the religious right was very entertaining and I think it did have an effect to embarrass them and open them to wider ridicule that they didn't expect and didn't enjoy much.
Holy shit Frank would roll over if he knew about Trump...
I don`t think so. He would have enjoyed the show.
How do you think he would have felt about Ilhan Omar and and Occasional Cortex? Frank was a Free Speech person. The modern Left is anything but. If comedians can’t go on College campuses, how do you think Frank Zappa would have fared?
He'd appreciate Trump and he'd think you're a cretin.
Doctor Demento and Frank Zappa were friends.
Oh dear: Zappa nails it again. Yes, movies were a party with an expense account - if it made money, great. If not... Hollywood always had people lined up. Glad he had a good time, cause we sure did.
LOVES IT!
some director should get hold of those scripts frank mentioned!
b. HUSSEIN o. REALLY needs to see this!

@2degucitas yes that was going to be my question too, it does look like around '84
Holy fuck I love this man..... when he gets talking about politics, he's fucking bang on......!
@ 0:01 : What is that on his right hand palm..a stigmata?
It seems like the early 80s was about the last time anyone remotely avant-garde or experimental could get on network TV (even late night) for this length of time. (Laurie Anderson was on network TV a lot, too).
Laurie Anderson , Lou Reed's spouse .
@@J0EYbagaDONUTS lol, yes they were married
I LOVE Dr. Demento, but he appears like he's going to shit his pants in this interview. I keep waiting for him to ask "Uhm, member when you were with the Mothers of Invention? Remember that?" ;-)
was this 1984-85?
Baby snakes looks trippy . .. anybody seen that movie ???
yeah it's great
Much of Zappa's music was definitely Dr. Dementish music.
@pinkypalmerosvideos what do you mean by "throwback"? That WAS back in the day and most likely he WAS a hippie, which is nothing whatsoever to be ashamed of.

@dclefevre Amen, and this was in the 80s! Quite a bit of what Frank says rings true, and also a bit of cynicism never hurt in small doses :)
@CosmikDebrisFZ you are what you is
Ahead of his time. Dangerous business indeed.
Yeah, he seems upset and terse, but if he ain't feelin' it he ain't fakin' it.
SIOUIDA
I thought he was always unusually articulate but I read instances where he sounded a little too judgmental for his own good.
I'd be pissed off and bored if this guy was interviewing me, too.
I like Frank Zappa, but he could be a real jerk sometimes.
Nobody ever asked Frank about his music. It's always Hollywood style success questions and politics.
Frank was right but Falwell got his, asked k8cked by Larry Flynt without Frank. for funky junk guitar visit Dirty DOM Music. Press the encircled D.
That's because Frank Zappa had schizophrenia. People with that condition are generally very stoic and un-emotional.
?????????
You're just pulling that out of your ass. Fuck off with that garbage.
LOL that's not even true whatsoever
