I'm a 65 year old man. Home a week now after open heart aortic valve replacement. Totally agree about getting comfortable...I struggled in hospital and no real sleep...6'2" tall not good in hospital beds. Home is better but not great. What has been great is after my fist short walk I walked 3 miles to shop on day 4 and 4 miles on day 6. Never thought having read up on recovery I would be able. And I took it steady. I have also day 7 stopped all pain relief to see how I am and so far fine. Hoping doctor will let me drive at 4 instead of 6 weeks, but no idea what they look at. I was dreading the recovery thinking I'd do something silly and wreck my chest, but I have found you want to relax so I accept my less active lifestyle. I live alone so cook etc and shop. Didn't imagine I would shop but okay with small rucksack.

Had valve surgery 5 days ago. I had a similar stiffness in my right trapezius (neck/shoulder area)- it turns out that the central IV catheter that was taped in place was applied in a way that my shoulder was lifted high. I had a stiff neck for a bit. I’m still in the thick of recovery. Seeing you doing well is giving me hope. Best of luck man!

That soreness was worse than expected but it goes away. I hope recovery goes well for you. Measure your success week by week and not day by day because there are lots of ups and downs, but you'll see the improvement every week.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. I will have the procedure in two weeks. The mental preparation and expectations are important to me. Very helpful to know what to expect in advance.

How you recover if you lived alone and had no family, friends, co workers or neighbors to take care of you?

That's a tough situation. I'm not sure, but I would talk with your doctor/surgeon and see if there are programs for in home help.

I was pretty limited for the first week or 2 at home. I couldn't lift much weight and sleep was still tough, but I had lots of help.
I had help for everything I needed, but I've seen others get through with limited to no help.

My son is in surgery now in Adelaide Australia. Did you require snacks in hospital at all? Why was walking difficult? Was it uncomfortable around the wound or from the anesthesia or something else?

    • @bicuspidaorticvalvereplacement
      @bicuspidaorticvalvereplacement  Před 9 měsíci +2

I hope everything went well with your son. I didn't have an appetite for the first few days in the hospital and only around meals once it started coming back so I never wanted snacks, but that could change by the person.
Walking was hard for several reasons. The pain and discomfort was the main reason, both my chest and my back/shoulders/butt were sore from being on the operating table. The meds didn't help either, but it slowly got better at the hospital and then I started to build stamina in the next couple of weeks.

    Hello,
I ‘m &2 years old and had a minimal invasive aortic valve replaced on May 14, released on May 17, had problems with the drainage tube being removed too soon, went to a Local Heart hospital
Since the fluid build up was around my lungs, Initially I did not know what was causing me to have breathing difficulties, ECHO was done and a chest x ray which revealed the fluid buildup
I had been given instructions to remove the suture that closed the drain incision on the 22nd, I had it removed while in the hospital and fluid was coming out like crazy, they were giving me lasix to remove the fluid, I felt better .
Tomorrow will be thirty days since my surgery, I had one of America’s best surgeon, he went between my ribs on the right side to replace my Valve.
I had the leaking valve since 2010,
I thank God for being a veteran.
My heart is not at the level of performance that my cardiologist is looking for, I have an ejection rate of 25% and we are trying to get it up to at least 45 to 50%
I have been wearing a Life Vest until my numbers are higher
I now my Lawn , cut tree limbs that are within my reach
Trying to get back to work,
I work as a storm adjuster during the sti
