  • Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain's longest-reigning monarch later when she passes the record set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. Princess Elizabeth became Queen while on an official visit to Kenya, while she was staying at the Treetops Hotel when her father, King George the 6th, died in 1952.
Alastair Leithead has been retracing her steps.

Especially considering she was never supposed to be Queen. Her uncle abdicated the throne to marry the woman he loved (who was divorced) so his brother, Prince George became King, which led to Princess Elizabeth (now Queen) being next in line to the throne.
I wonder if she would have had a younger brother back then if she would have been skipped over. I know the Queen changed the rules when Prince William's daughter Princess Charlotte was born.

Alastair Malcolm Leithead is a British journalist working as a foreign correspondent for the BBC. Leithead is currently based in Nairobi and works across all BBC News outlets.
Treetops is situated about 150 km (a two-hour drive) north of Kenya's capital Nairobi. A two hour drive therefore to make a 2.10 documentary.

That and he saw how thin she was. He decided she was not worth the effort. Animals and most people in general do recognize real power when they see/smell it.
My mother and maternal grandmother are perfect examples.
Both very short, 4'9 in my mother's case 4'8 in my grandmother's case. Both very small build. Either one of them enters a room, they make a hole fast and show deference. They don't say a word. Their gaze says all that needs be said.
The aura of real power is always recognizable. Even blind people can see it
      Most animals can smell it.

The British monarch actually becomes so the moment the previous monarch dies. I think it stems from the days when people would usurp the crown after the previous monarch's passing, so it became law that the country would not be without monarch.
