I think this has to be one of the most recognizable songs in history for being a tv show theme song. You can't hear this without thinking of the Golden Girls show. So recognizable. Iconic.
It was instantly recognized long before Golden Girls used it. Just saying. 😁
Yes, my mind is filling in the backup singers.
Didn’t realize there was more words
The only way I knew this song was from the TV show, and it's pretty cool to hear the whole song.
you mean everyone except them
Loved Andrew’s Lonely Boy
Best song lonely boy
Lonely boy is a heartbreaker, but it's a bittersweet one. I still love it though
@@TonyM1961 very true
Love that song!
That is his signature song. Thank You For Being a Friend is ...ok.
Golden Girls theme song! Love that show and the song was a perfect blend for it.
Yes, I was going to write the same! What a great show it was!
Me too
Knew it wouldn’t be long before someone mentioned The Golden Girls.
@@MS-ro9dm 😂🤣😅
@@MS-ro9dm good ol' Sofia 😂
Andrew's mom, singer Marni Nixon, and my parents were close friends when they were in their late teens, and I grew up playing with Andy during family get-togethers, so I'm really happy you've finally discovered him. My favorite song of his was his top-10 hit, "Lonely Boy," if you're interested in listening to more of his music. I notice that many other comments mention how "Thank You for Being a Friend" was the theme song for The Golden Girls, but he also performed "Final Frontier," the theme song for another popular TV show, Mad About You.
I loved Mad About You. Didn't know the song ttle for that series but good to know.
I remember watching Marni Nixon in Boomerang and thinking for a local children's TV show it was as good, if not better, than Sesame Street.
I guess the Emmy's agreed with me seeing as the show won 20+ times.
Bing, Bong, Bang.......... Bing, Bong, Bang.......... It’s Boomerang!
Bing, Bong, Bang...........Bing, Bong, Bang...........It’s Boomerang!
Did not know he was Marni Nixon's son, thank you for connecting the dots.
WOW, what a career she's had!! I knew she sang for Deborah Kerr, Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn; but didn't realize she sang as Grandma Fa in Mulan!! She was also one of the Nuns in Sound of Music. Such a talented singer!! 🎶
I saw him in 1977, opening for The Eagles (Hotel California Tour) He was fun.
Andrew played in Linda Ronstadts band for years! He also produced many of her albums! Multi talented!
Are you sure you aren't thinking of Peter Asher? Asher is the whitest, most pale faced dude I've ever seen. He had no color in his face. Great singer, producer.
@@wynnyoder5605They are right, Gold worked with Linda for years before becoming a solo artist.
@@wynnyoder5605 no it wasn’t Peter Asher. Asher produced many of Linda’s records but was not a player in her band - Andrew was.
Linda was amazing at finding talent. Most of the eagles played for her
Andrew played in the band and had a lot of influence but Peter Asher was the actual producer.
Golden Girls theme song! This song makes you smile and watching the Golden Girls makes you laugh! So sad when the last "Girl", Betty White passed away at the end of 2021. Luckily they gave us 7 seasons of humor and friendship to watch. Watched with my mom - it was her favorite show. So this song reminds me of them and her now that both she and they are gone. Thanks for the smile! 🥰
One of my teacher friends cried for days when I gave her a card that had the theme song part of the song in it! Thank you for being a friend Colleen!💕
That's how your subscribers feel about you, Amber and Jay. You give sincere and insightful comments, but in such a casual way that we feel almost like your extended family. Love and hugs to you and your family.
That is such a beautiful and insightful thing to say. Thank you Ron. It is very true!
I feel like I could move in with them and immediately fit in with the family. Plus how much fun would it be to play with little Luca?
@@LiberalsArePoop And the girls. It would be so good!
So very very true!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Absolutely! Thank you, Jay and Amber! 😊❤️
Andrew's middle daughter here! Thank you so much for this video! Made me smile watching you two smile!!
IT WAS STILL THE 70s no wonder they are smilling
His mother was Marni Nixon,, the "ghost singer" voice for Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Deborah Kerr in The King And I and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady (all musicals) because none of the actresses were singers.
Marni was also one of the singing nuns in "The Sound of Music" who performed "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" (When I'm with her I'm confused, out of focus and bemused...)
The original Milli Vanilli ? 😂
His Father was an Academy Award winning composer too!
Wow, hearing this song takes me back to kindergarten! His other song that should be heard is "Lonely Boy." I think you'll like the lyrics.
and Never Let Her Slip Away. I think this was his biggest hit in the UK . I also like Andrew's later collaboration in Wax with Graham Gouldman from 10CC. RIP Andrew .
Another great tune of his is "Never Let Her Slip Away."
That's a great song!
Ok I'm out of the loop. I honestly had no idea this was an actual song before the Golden Girls took it over. Love it!
That’s the theme song for Golden Girls tv show. ❤️
I love this song. I don't think I know anyone who do not like this song and you can't think of it without thinking of the Golden girls😊😊
I’ve only heard vaguely of the Golden Girls, don’t think it was that popular on British TV.. Sorry, I’m not a fan of this song as I associate it with John Humble, The Yorkshire Ripper hoaxer, people of a certain age will remember that he sent letters and a tape to the Police ... a snippet of this song was played on the tape
@@Trish-ql9kz Oh I did not know that. I am so sorry and God bless those who were victims of this person, but I can understand why you would feel that way definitely
People forget this was a hit song in its own right long before the Golden Girls.
Songs from 1978 love me some 70s AMBER
One of the BEST songs ever!! EVER! Theme to Golden Girls tv show also. Timeless ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You will see Andrew Gold in several Linda Ronstadt live videos as he was her bandleader 1973-1977 and continued to write, arrange, and play sessions for her afterwards and would sporadically join her for tours.
Lonely boy Andrew is fire on piano
Shout-OUT, to the"Loco"-Ladies !! 🤩
Jay & Amber, Lonely Boy" and "Never Let Her Slip Away" were his other hits.
Thank you two for being our friends. Have a Satisfying Saturday!!
Awwwwwww
Fun fact: Linda Ronstadt's version of You're No Good - Andrew Gold plays the lead guitar on that song! Linda's vocal and Andrew's guitar solo make that song so darn good!!
RIP Andrew, this and "Lonely Boy" truly are gold.
Andrew Gold, an incredibly talented songwriter and multi instrumentalist. He was Linda Ronstadt's guitar/piano player for several years. A talent gone way too soon. RIP Andrew Gold, a great loss to music.
Speaking of Linda Ronstadt, she sang the backing vocals on Andrew's only Top Ten hit "Lonely Boy." Jay and Amber LOVE Linda Ronstadt -so they definitely need to react to "Lonely Boy"
12 years ago today we lost a great singer song writer rest in peace andrew gold..!!!
It will be stuck for decades to come, guys…..❤ Thank y’all for bein a friend.
This was just one of those special little songs that put a smile on your face and made you think of how lucky you are to have those special people in your life. 💞
Awwww , The Golden Girls !!!!! That was a great sitcom about senior ladies ❤ classic 💜🎵🎶✌
“Never Let Her Slip Away” should be your next Andrew Gold reaction.
Yes , absolutely . I also liked Lonely Boy and a beautiful but lesser known song called Oh Urania .
His work with the band Bryndle is great also.
My personal fave too
Liked this song and the cover of it did complement "Golden Girls." My favorite of his is the autobiographical "Lonely Boy." His work with Linda Ronstadt throughout the mid-late 70s was superb. Gone too soon. RIP, Andrew.
Talented man from a talented family. RIP Mr. Gold. ❤
Didn't even make it to his 60th birthday. Such a great talent that left us much too soon.
Song best known for the theme of 'Golden Girls'. Great show, sweet song.
Best TV theme song ever.
I can’t hear this and not think of the Golden Girls ❤
RELEASED IN 1978 I hope you know the LORD JESUS CHRIST .And he knows you your eternity depends on him
Rock In Peace Andrew.
You might possibly remember this song as the opening theme song for the show "The Golden Girls".
Thanx 2 the 70s
Betty White was the last living Golden Girl until her death in 2022. She was 99 (about 2 weeks shy of her 100th). RIP to all of the Golden Girls! You and this song will forever be etched into my memories & my heart. ❤❤❤❤
Andrew Gold was Linda Ronstadt's right hand man through much of the seventies. When watching some of Linda's videos you'll see him, the redhead playing guitar, especially lead.
☺Amber & Jay - Thank you for playing all these good songs!!!
I had no idea he wrote this. I have been a fan of his work with Linda Ronstadt since the 70's but haven't looked into him as a solo performer.
Everyone talks about the Golden Girls, but this song takes me back to 1978 and 6th grade when it was on the radio and will always remind me of my friends back then.
Love this song. Andrew was crazy talented.
This song always brightens my mood and makes me think about my friends and family! 😎 A cover version was used as the theme for The Golden Girls. Andrew Gold was also a producer and he performed on several of Linda Ronstadt's hits like "You're No Good". More gold from Andrew Gold you need to check out: "Lonely Boy", "Can Anybody See You", "How Can This Be Love", "One Of Them Is Me" and "The Final Frontier" (theme for the sitcom Mad About You).
He had a minor hit called "That's Why i Love You" that was pretty good circa 1975.
Love this song. As was said, he played guitar in Linda Ronstadt's band.
Definitely an uplifting song.
Great band and singer! Andrew Gold and his band was Linda Ronstadt’s band for a few years as one of her guitarists and vocals. He would play before her and then Linda would join the band after the intermission for her concert! That was in the early 80’s.
My wife and I and our wedding party came in this song but it was the Golden Girls theme version.
Just like the others, I have to say that you have GOT to listen to "Lonely Boy". Another vibe. A bittersweet vibe, but one you can't help but enjoy
"Lonely Boy" by Andrew Gold is great. ❤❤
From 1978 I hope the Lord Jesus Christ Knows you .Your Eternity Is what you do with Him. He died on the cross for all your sins past present and future. If you put ALL your TRUST IN HIM AND IN Him Alone. The best new you will ever hear. Have a great day God Bless you Kim .He did that for you personally Kim ...
one of the best songwriter in pophistory. incredibly underrated. fortunately he was pretty active and wrote numerous supergood popsongs...
This song along with Queen Your My Best Friend. This is just pure love, why the music makes you happy, too.
I remember hearing this a lot on the radio - lonnng before The Golden Girls came along. Great song.
Awwww!! Golden Girls. I've never heard it out of the context of the show, but it immediately makes my heart happy.
I'm pretty sure if you go back and watch Linda Ronstadt doing Tracks of My Tears you'll see Andrew doing backing vocals and playing guitar
Got both of you waiting when he sang "i want to thank you for being a..." lol
Andrew was such a kind and happy guy, as well as an amazing songwriter/vocalist/musician. You GOTTA listen to more from him. For his solo stuff, I'd go with "Lonely Boy", "Falling Down", "Pal Of Mine", and so many others next. I'd also listen to the band "Wax", which is Andrew Gold & Graham Gouldman (from the band 10cc). They have so many great songs, like "Wherever You Are", "In Some Other World", "Maybe", "First Time In Love", and so many more. Check it all out! RIP Andrew Gold.
One of my favorite
I knew and listened to this song long BEFORE it was used as a tv show theme song.
Is it weird that this song makes me want to curl up on the couch and watch the "Golden Girls"? This is the ultimate feel good song.
The full version of this song is amazing. "I wanna thank you..." is my favorite part. Andrew Gold has a great voice.
His musical talent came naturally since his mother (Marni Nixon) was a classically trained soprano singer and his father (Ernest Gold composed the music for a number of films. His mother was known for being the actual singing voice of top actresses in Hollywood musicals. Andrew Gold actually died on this date in 2011, just two months away from turning 60..
I remember growing up and watching a local kids' show called Boomerang, and Marni Nixon was the host. I can sing the theme song even today! Her voice over work is so prolific!
@@musicgrl100 Bing, Bong, Bang.......... Bing, Bong, Bang

@@JuandeFucaU Ha, yes! “You throw a ball against the wall and what does it do (what does it do)? It comes back to you…..” 😊
Marni Nixon sang Eliza Doolittle's songs in "My fair lady". Audrey Hepburn mimed to them.
@@clivenewman4810 She also voiced all of Natalie Wood's song parts in the original movie version of "West Side Story". One musically talented family.
what an adorable song!!! The Golden Girls come to mind but this song by Andrew Gold just tops it for sincerity and joy.
Andrew Gold has so many great songs. His song "Genevieve" will absolutely blow you away. He was also Linda Ronstadt's right hand man.
Thanks for mentioning "Genevieve" -- I think it's one of the best, most touching love songs I've ever heard.
The Golden Girls Theme song, I still watch their shows, they get me laughing so hard ❤❤
“Lonely Boy” is his best song and tells a great story.
Andrew Gold was one of the regular backing band members for Linda Ronstadt. Very talent musician.
Next AG song HAS to be "Lonely Boy." It preceded this song and was his first big hit.
This is such a sweet song that makes you happy. Together with "That's What Friends Are For" and "You've Got a Friend" a real friendship anthem! Andrew Gold has another very sweet and lighthearted song. "Never Let Her Slip Away".
I remember when this song came out (yes, I am that old) and it hit #1. And I remember years later when "Golden Girls" premiered and I thought it was great that they used one of my favorite songs from high school at the theme. But now most people didn't know this was a hit song BEFORE it became the TV theme! You need to also listen to his other fantastic #1 hit - "Lonely Boy."
Andrew Gold sings for the GOLDEN GIRLS!! Yeah! Fun song!
Get the cheesecake, Rose!
It's a classic and legendary song. Have you seen The Golden Girls? You will be hooked. Enjoy your day!!!
Pretty sure they don't have a clue that this is the theme song to The Golden Girls. It was a little before their time.
good, simple, easy on the ears; great casual listen; kinda fun song
When you are down, it's good to hear this song!😁 Gotta play Lonely Boy for the next Andrew Gold !
U hit the nail on the head y’all!!! Andrew Gold truly constructed a song that is designed to just make you smile from ear to ear. Even a jaded, dark guy like me can crack a smile to this song….friends are a treasure no doubt….I always think of “The Golden Girls”when I hear this 💜💜💜💜💜
Andrew Gold played in Linda Ronstadt’s band off and on over the years and she recorded songs that had been written or co-written by this talented artist. This is probably his most famous song because it was used as the theme song for “Golden Girls” TV show. Speaking of Linda, remember that it doesn’t need to be Female Friday to explore her amazing catalogue. She has had duets with many top artists like, Cher, Phoebe Snow, Frank Sinatra, Smoky Robinson, James Ingram, James Taylor, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Aaron Neville, and many more. Love your channel as always. 🌺✌️
Well, I had just left you a recommendation to listen to this song, and lo 'n behold this video popped right up on the feed. Glad you like this as much as I have for almost a half century. I loved this song since long before "Golden Girls" was even thought of as a TV show.
RIP Andrew Gold
It was a 70s hit before it became one of the best tv theme songs ever!
Love this song.
I would like to dedicate this song..to say Thank you for being a friend to my dear friend, Todd. He was always a wonderful friend through all my ups and downs. Love you, dear friend. Thx
To those younger kiddos, back in the day u would call into the radio station to request a song and could dedicate it to someone. 😃
What an amazing talent! His star burned fast and bright 😢 Thankful for the wonderfully awesome music he left us!
As you both observed, this is a terrific song on the topic of friendship. I would also recommend Queen's song "You're My Best Friend"...... Everybody knows, loves and talks about Bohemian Rhapsody but, "You're My Best Friend" is my favorite Queen song
Agreed,always been my favorite.
You should do “Never let her slip away” from Andrew Gold 😀👍🏻
He didn’t make it to old age but left great music for everyone and you can hear it all the time everyday on the golden girls
A GREAT oldie!! Why am I in tears after hearing it...
Lonely Boy by Andrew Gold is a must play. Fun fact. Andrew was in the band that backed Linda Ronstadt for awhile before he broke out on his own.
Now you’ve GOT to watch The Golden Girls!! It’s an AWESOME sitcom, SO HILARIOUS!! Love this song and love love love The Golden Girls!! ❤
Always a feel good song....bye the way, thank you for being a friend.
Andrew Gold was a two-hit wonder. His other big hit was Lonely Boy.
He work a lot on Linda Ronstadt`s albums and live shows and also on Art Garfunkle`s solo Breakaway album. My favorite song of his is Never Let her Slip Away.
You two are the most adorable couple. Love your reactions and interactions with each other. Wish you all the best.
Loved Andrew Gold’s “Never let her slip away” and “Lonely boy”
Thank you for making us smile! Along with many other songs - fun fact: Andrew wrote/performed the viral sensation, "Spooky, Scary Skeletons"!
RIP Betty, Bea, Rue and Estelle. Can't hear this song without thinking of them. Andrew Gold's "Lonely Boy" is a good listen.
This is one of my favorite songs ever! My favorite tune from Andrew is "Lonely Boy."
100% right on, Amber. I have lost touch with people along the way, but some of the most rewarding experiences in life have been with the people who loved and accepted me enough to be called "friend." My best friend and I are coming up on our 40 year "Friendiversary" in a couple of months, and I'm hoping we'll get some of our other college friends to visit as well, even though we are in different countries, and different continents. I feel so blessed not just to have known these special people, but to have known them in a time that allows us to stay in touch while so far away. I know you get it, but I'll say it anyway - good friends, real friends, aren't easily either made or replaced in later life. So don't take the ones you have for granted. Like all relationships, friendships need attention, investment, and nurturing. Be the friend you want to have, and keep the ones that make you better people. Bright Blessings to you all, and your friends!
I probably haven't heard that song for 30 years. Made me smile. Thanks!
I love hearing the original versions of what became TV theme songs (this, the "Laverne & Shirley" theme, etc.) because there's often so much more to the original song and it's fun to learn the original tune.
Thank YOU Jay and Amber for playing "Thank You For Being A Friend" by the great, great Andrew Gold (R.I.P)
Also, did you know that he was Linda Ronstadt's lead guitarist and band leader in the early days of her career. He is the one playing hot lead guitar in that video you guys reacted to in August of last year of Linda performing "You're No Good" on the Midnight Special.
He was Linda Ronstadt's piano , guitar player he was was multitallented and a great song writer thanks for making me remember him
This song is Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia approved!! ❤😂
Andrew Gold was also Linda Ronstadt's guitarist for a few years before going solo. He played on several of her big hits.
Andrew was part of a folk group called Bryndle. Their 1995 album is beautiful. The group includes Andrew, Wendy Waldman, and Karla Bonoff.
