Andrew Gold was a singer, songwriter & record producer of pop/soft rock music in the 1970s. Gold played on many records by other artists, most notably Linda Ronstadt. He had some good songs on his own such as "Lonely Boy", "Thank You for Being A Friend" (theme for "The Golden Girls"), "Never Let Her Slip Away" etc. He died in 2011 at the age of 59.
His work with the band Bryndle was great too

Andrew Gold's mother was Marnie Nixon, famous as the real voice of Maria in West Side Story and tons of other movies (Anna in the King & I etc.) His music pedigree is impeccable.

I believe he started with Carole King and James Taylor and then picked up on Linda Ronstadt and he played in bands all through the '70s. I like this song! Peace!

Lonely boy has always been on my playlists! Great song! (This song reminds me a lot of good ol’ R.I.
For me, the message of this song is that we need to do better raising young boys. They dressed him up warmly they sent him to school. They taught him to fight and be nobody’s fool. Oh, what a lonely boy. It’s like when people say boys don’t cry. We don’t allow them to feel their emotions without judgment.
Yup. Concerned about raising him "right" but not concerned about "who" he is

Kind of a lame song in the 70s...didn't improve with time. At least it wasn't disco.
